“Dorcas please let me take that.” Andromeda was quick to take the food from the other hands as she ushered her in. “Don’t worry about your shoes.” She called from the kitchen. The cake looked lovely in the middle of their small table. The plates had already been set of course it turned out ted was a prior engagement and so Andromeda spent her those keeping busy trying not to worry about him being out. Over the recent months Andromeda has acquired more friends of course some being much like her husband muggleborn.

Turning her hands clasped together she smiled “you look just lovely” she spoke genuinely. It was nice to see her well thinking of.. him.. made her heart sink, and nerves ball up in her stomach. It worried her in ways she couldn’t describe. How she wanted to reach pull her close and ask why. What was she doing? It however wasn’t her life many of course in her family wouldn’t even speak of her or too her, narcissa could barely look at her. Perhaps there was nothing even to worry about. She no longer associated herself with the lesstanges anyway.

“I thought maybe we could have something to drink while the food finished. It’s almost done. Oh.. I’ve got some flowers when I was out. How do you think they look on the wall?” She asked guiding Dorcas in. Taking a seat on the deep blue couch she exhaled her hand pressed against the cushion she had many times fallen asleep on. “Tell me how you’ve been.”

dorcas let the other woman take her food, a smile on her face. she walked slowly into the tonk’s home, and took in the sight. it was such a homey house, and dorcas instantly felt welcomed there. she followed andromeda into the dinning area and saw that it was all set up. “andy, your house is so cozy!” she told her, turning to her friend and grabbing her hands. “i am so glad you have gotten this life.” she was so happy for andromeda. 

"thank you,” she beamed, running her hands down the front of her dress. she hadn’t dressed up in awhile, and thought this might be a good opportunity to try out the new dress she had bought. it was a flowery red dress, comfy but also pretty. “i thought tonight would be an excuse to bust out this new dress i bought.” 

“a drink sounds wonderful. do you have any wine?” she asked, and her gaze turned to the flowers on the wall. they were beautiful and dorcas said so to andromeda. she followed her friend to sit on the couch and let out a sigh. “i think i was happier at hogwarts, honestly, andy.”

dorcas moved around the kitchen with ease, a smile on her face and a hum drifting from her lips. she had been baking all sorts of sweets. brownies, chocolate cake, had even went out and bought a tub of chocolate ice cream before she came home. she had quite a sweet tooth, and a weakness for anything chocolate - as did her guest that should arrive at any moment.

she had flour on her cheeks, her apron dirty and wrinkled. dorcas was happy though, happy and excited to be seeing sirius and spending any time with him at all. she thought maybe things could be different now, that they were older. they weren’t surrounded 24/7 by their respective groups, and could actually have alone time without it being intruded on or made fun of. (rabastan wouldn’t get mad, wouldn’t even know and maybe her heart could be put back together by someone more worthy.)

still, her heart sort of sped up at the thought that this was a date with the eldest black boy. she pushed rabastan from her mind, wouldn’t let him ruin any more than he already has. this would be a fun night, one that she would enjoy. she pulled the brownie pan from the oven, setting it on the counter to cool and going to the sink to wash her hands. she watched the sun setting through the window, letting out a sigh.

dorcas walked up to the tonk’s family home, shifting the weight of her pan that held a chocolate cake in her hands. she knocked on the door, a soft smile on her face as she waited outside to be greeted. she was glad that andromeda had invited her to a dinner in their new home, she hadn’t talked to the other woman intimately since they were children. they had grown distant during school, especially with her engagement announcement to rabastan. 

she shouldn’t have worried though, she was just too jealous to had seen it at the time. andromeda had her heart for someone else, and dorcas should have remembered just how strong the middle black child was. she was a soft strength, a quiet courage. now, she sees how wrong it would have been if andromeda was forced to a life with rabastan. ted would off her so much more, the man had so much love to give it always seemed. 

the door swung open, pulling her out of her reverie and she gave a slit nod. “it’s so good to see you.”

“That’s true,” he agreed with a small nod. “Someone’s eager,” he teased, watching as she stood up. “But I can do tonight,” he added with a nod. Sirius shook his head, laughing lightly, “I don’t know if that’s really necessary, anything with chocolate will keep me happy.”

dorcas was actually very eager. she had always enjoyed her times with sirius, and now that they were out of school it seemed like anything could happen. it’s a date, she thought. “seems we’re on the same page.” she giggled, having also loved chocolate. “well, i’ll be going then. i’ll see you later tonight.” she gave a smile, a little wave and turned her back to him as she went to walk back to mary’s house.

He chuckled as she pulled out her wand. “ You should put that away before you hurt yourself.” He said. He was a very skilled dueler and he doubted she would use to the right spell. The only spell was to kill him. “ I want you to apologize, get on your knees and beg for my forgiveness.” He growled. “ It doesn’t matter what you want, Dorcas. That isn’t our life we don’t get to make that call.” He said. She was crazy if she thought any of them had choices in anything. “ You could have lived on your own with me.” He said. He wasn’t a good person not at all, but he would have been a good husband, all she had to do was listen. “ Oh, I am going to marry someone else, but you are going to pay for your mistake.”

if she could have frowned even more, she would have. “if this isn’t our life then what’s the point in living it?” she questioned, feeling a little hopeless. “to be mere tools? what kind of life is that?” what was the point if you couldn’t live the life you wanted, having to do everything you were told. were they just alive to be slaves? “i wanted to choose, and you can too.” her voice was softer this time, even if it would fall on deaf ears. “just-“ she was about to tell him to just get over his torture until she heard noise coming from behind her. “what-“ there was a group of boys, seemingly had been connected with the person who lay dead on the street.

without thinking dorcas began to run towards the group, turning back to evan quickly and shooting a quick impedimenta at him. “it was him!” she told the group of men, tripping over her own feet as she came upon them. “it was him.” she breathed, and knew she was probably sending these men to their death. “he wants to kill me next.” they told her to run, that they’d deal with him and dorcas just knew they wouldn’t be able to beat him yet she couldn’t persuade them from their mission. tears came to her eyes as she held one of their arms, but ended up letting go and running back towards the library. she cast a quick disillusionment charm and was gone.

“My reflection is an absolute dreamboat,” he joked before rolling his eyes. “But even I prefer hanging out with other people than my own reflection.” Most of the time anyway. In his lower moments he barely wanted to say hello to anyone else, but that was not what he was focusing on right now. “It’s a date,” he repeated, using the words without even thinking about the meaning behind them. 

“it’d be such a waste to keep you all to yourself.” she commented, moving to stand up. “it’s a date, and i say we shall do it tonight if you aren’t too busy.” dorcas declared, crossing her arms as she looked down at him. “i shall bake throughout the afternoon until you arrive! i’ll get everything all comfy.”

Unfair was one word for it. Mary loved Dorcas more than words allowed her to convey, and yet there were things she would always envy about her, things she would never dream of admitting to her. Many nights Mary spent writing the entire truth to the three girls who got her through her parents’ deaths, but not one slip of parchment was sent. Sometimes she feared she never would get the courage to be as open as she once was. Instead of commenting and darkening the mood, Mary gave Dorcas a breathy laugh. “What’s unfair is how quickly you’re learning.”

Smiling, she moved around the corner to point at eleven ball that was now parallel to the cue ball. “Now do the same for this one. Remember to visualize the angles.” There was no surprise that her friend was picking up on the game without question. Dorcas was simply one of those people who had it. “You might be ready for tournaments quicker than you think, and if you perfect your innocent routine, you might make a pretty good pool shark while you’re at it.”

dorcas had always wondered what was going on with mary, ever since hogwarts. ever since, since something that just seemed to change something. she could never sway the girl to say anything, had never wanted to push either and so she let it all lie. she wanted to hold mary, brush her hair out of her face and tell her that the world will be right again. that they were still here, and that was enough some days. instead, she just flashed her friend a smile and pulled back from the table. “i was always told i was a fast learner. seems to be coming in handy now.” 

following mary around the table, her eyes narrowed in onto the eleven ball she pointed out. “i got this.” she was more confident this time as she began aiming up her shot once more. she let out a breath, and then shot the pool stick forward. it hit the cue ball, which bounced into the eleven ball and she sunk it once again. she let out a squeal, looking back towards her friend. “oh, wouldn’t they fall for that?” she giggled, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “they’d probably feel bad for me and go easy. poor innocent and naive dorcas.”

Peter was aware that he should technically still be at his work desk, copying down his notes from the mind numbing meeting he had attended earlier today. He was technically still on the clock until five, but considering his boss had left half an hour early, there was no reason for Peter to stick around boiling to death with his boring colleges talking about nothing of interest. 

Sneaking out of the office was easy for Peter, a quick glammar charm over his desk and he was heading to the door without anyone stopping him. Outside at last he lit up a cigarette instantly, leaning against the wall known as the smokers section for ministry employees, finally feeling calm as he breathed in the nicotine he’d been craving since his lunch break. He was so in his own head that when he heard a voice beside him he practically jumped out of his skin, his hand flying straight to his wand as he turned quickly to face the person beside him. “Maybe don’t sneak up on people like that, fuck.”

dorcas hadn’t meant to cause quite the spook to peter. she had merely seen him out and thought she would see how he was doing since she hadn’t seen him much outside of hogwarts. then again, she hadn’t seen many of her school friends. “i’m sorry, peter.” she apologized, giving him a warm smile. “i was just walking home and saw you over here so i thought i’d come stop by and say hi.” she explained. “so hi. how have you been?”

“Any time with you is wonderful,” Sirius said dramatically, his voice joking though he meant his words. These days it was getting harder and harder to find people to just be normal around, and finding that was wonderful in itself. “And of course any time with me is even more wonderful,” he added, with a firm nod before he grinned. “Mm.. I don’t know, maybe those fizzy jelly worm things. Y’know the muggle one?” he asked. He rolled his eyes when she looked at him with a doe-eyed gaze, but a smile played on his lips. “If a movie can’t keep our attention I think you should be blaming it and not us.”

dorcas couldn’t help the way her face heated up at his comment. sirius had always been dear to her heart. a laugh bubbled out of her and she said, “why, of course, sirius. i’m sure you have a wonderful time with you and your reflection. you and james could go on double dates if you brought mirrors!” listening to his request, she nodded. she would make sure to make him whatever it is he would like for the movie night. “then it’s a date.” she murmured, her smile soft.

“Oh.” He nearly shouted. It had been years  since they last saw each other, since she ran away from their home, leaving him behind like a fool that had to explain that he failed his order for the dark lord to bring her over to his side. “ All you have to say is oh.” He chuckled darkly. “ You have stayed home today.” He told her.

He pulled his wand up pointing it at her. “ Were you planning to come back home? You have been at the library for an awfully long time.” He joked. “ You are going to regret leaving me, for embarrassing me.” He said.

dorcas eyes flickered to his wand which was now pointed at her. she gripped her own, pulling it out of her pocket but not aiming it at him. “what do you want me to say evan?” she asked, a tilt to her head. “i’m merely going about my life, trying to live it somewhat normal.” which is what she had wanted, damn it all. damn the war, and the prejudices and all of it. she just wanted to have a normal life. “i’m trying to live on my own, without my parents. trying to face the world by myself.” she told him, although she doubted he cared about anything she said. he was just angry for her leaving him. to think she would have had to marry such an angry and hateful man, to obey his command. “can’t you just marry someone else?” she asked, trying to calm her nerves. he wasn’t going to kill her, she had to believe this.

The person on the bench was mumbling through an apology and a plea for their life when he noticed someone walking out of the corner of his eye. He turned feeling his eye darken and his anger rose as he saw Dorcas. If anyone was top of his list it was her. She made a fool out of him by running away, it was one of the reasons he didn’t have more of an important job than just patrolling.” He growled turning back to the person raising his wand killing them swiftly before making his way over to her.

“ Did you think you could slip away without me noticing you?” He chuckled darkly, standing in front of her. Just being near her made him angry, his hand twitched as he longed to hurt her, but he much rather toy with her before he ended her life.   

she felt so tense as she heard a body hit the ground, and footsteps coming from behind. dorcas tried to stay strong, keep an air of confidence as she continued her small walk. now, though, there was no way she could walk back to mary’s with this snake slithering after her. it was only a matter of time before she had run into him, to face his wrath like the sun. he made way to block her path, quick and effortless and dorcas almost ran into him. 

“oh,” came out of her mouth as she took a step back from the threatening man. he seemed darker now than what she remembered. i did it once, i could probably do it again. she kept her mouth shut, though and could only stare at him. dorcas felt flustered, scared and really just tired of this all. her free hand went into her pocket, feeling for her wand in case she need to use it. “i was walking home from the library.” she told him, her eyes glancing down at the book in her hands. she really didn’t know how to respond, not wanting to cause this to become a fight and yet she wasn’t going to act like a little mouse.

“ Well, well, well.” He said as he approached the person. “ What are you doing out that this time?” He asked looking down at them sitting on the bench. “ Not really smart being out, how knows who you’ll run into.” He smirked

dorcas could only tense at the voice coming from behind her. although his speech was merely directed on whoever was on the bench, she couldn’t help but feel her heart pound. she didn’t want to turn around, didn’t want to face this man she had been hiding from. she had been merely walking home from the library, a book in her hand. she couldn’t even think up what to say to evan, if he would turn towards her and recognize her. her walking slowed, though, but she kept on her path and wouldn’t stop for him. she knew she’d be unable to flee from him once he noticed her, and yet she didn’t wish to face him. her thoughts began to race as she reminded herself of all the defensive spells she could use, even some offensive if need be. she may have left her family, her friends and her engagement with evan rosier behind - but no one knew that she had joined up with the order. she had kept that secret under lock and key and doing so, she was able to go about her life. 

that didn’t mean people from her past wanted to leave her alone, though. she felt as if they haunted her and maybe she haunted them too.
