Reader Adopts a Geno Bitty
(Hope you don't mind I made you a bitty doctor! :3 I always make sure to write at least 500 words or more for a writing prompt request, so if you want less or more please tell me!)
The walls were like sleet, cold and blank. The walls were a blizzard of cold as you slid you fingers down the wall feeling between the grooves and cracks, of the wall. Dry peeling paint spilled between your fingers the paint was getting old and the mural would have to be redone soon. The drawings on the wall that were once commissioned by your boss reminded you vaguely of a children's mural. The art on the wall felt like it belonged in a daycare and not a bitty care clinic. The Department of Health paid to have all the bitty clinics be redecorated inside to make doctor's visits appear more 'friendly' to bittys so they'd feel less scared during their visits. Instead of funding bitty disease research, and supplies they decided to fund a paint job.
The clinic smelled like antiseptic, the other bitty vets who prowled the halls were like hypochondriacs in their masks they wore like haphazard suits. On the walls were colorful posters of diagnostics encouraging you to wash your hands, and facts about bitty vaccination and preventable diseases. Jars of cotton balls and tonsil sticks that could be mistaken for popsicle sticks were in jars strewn neatly on the snow white counters. The plain linoleum floor clicked under your shoes as you paced around the check-up room, swirling around to organize your doctor's equipment.
Echoes of laughter danced down the halls as bitty's ran down the quiet halls of the clinic with their frantic owners chasing behind them. You hoped there wasn't another wheelchair race between bitties. Ghosts of sunlight escaped your vision, sun shyly peeked at you from the curtainless window. The stethoscope was cold around your blue doctor's scrubs. Your lanyard with your credentials jingled hitting against your lower chest whenever you walked.
You worked in a bitty rehabilitation center, helping improve injured bittys motor functions and skills, you worked to improve equilibrium and overall a bitty's ambulatory function. It was more like a pediatrician's office than anything. When bittys first came to the surface, humans were unable to classify them as monsters or pets, their souls were too chemically different and weak to be a monsters soul, and without a soul trait they weren't human.
Eventually with the protesting of Bitty rights activists bitty's were granted both monster and animal rights. Now people were being charged with bitty abuse. Humans like those made you sick to your stomach. You often saw cases like that working as a bitty doctor. Often, you saw bitty's and their owners come in with bitty's who had recently got reconstructive surgery to replace missing limbs, or pieces of skull that were damaged in car accidents, other bitty's you saw we're bitty's who needed to be suited for prosthetics, stray bittys who had been rescued from fighting rings. It was your primary focus to help rehabilitate bitty's who had recently gone through surgery.
You watched as a Baby Blue, with crutches, hobble out the room with their owner. It was a bitty who had recently got fitted for a prosthetic. You wanted to comfort the woman as she watched her bitty with teary eyes. "DO NOT WORRY MAIDEN, I THE MAGNIFICENT TACO, WILL BE IN MAGNIFICENT SHAPE IN NO TIME." Taco... huh, that wasn't a name you usually heard for a Baby Blue. Usually it was always Blue, or Blueberry. Those were the most common name you've heard for these types of bitties. You were always surprised how loud such tiny bittys could be and forgot to cover your ears.
You wondered why she didn't just pick up the bitty and leave if he couldn't properly walk. "Thank you doctor." She said as she slung her purse over her shoulder and moved out the door with her Baby Blue. You put away the X-rays and diagnostics for the Baby Blue, you would have to schedule another appointment for your patient to be fitted for a prosthetic later. You noticed how Taco was using a doll's leg in place of a prosthetic, and that Barbie leg just didn't really suit him... You were surprised he even managed to get along with only one leg for so long.
Your next patient came in and you were surprised! This wasn't one of your scheduled patients. You were confused, looking at your chart, you realized they hadn't scheduled an appointment with you. It was a Geno Bitty, you didn't see these guys often. He came in with a teenage boy with greasy hair. "I'm sorry but you'll have to schedule an appointment." You apologized, turning as you briefly washed your hands in the sink basin near the biohazard bin that was full of empty syringes, and examination gloves.
You turned your gaze back to them, and your eyes dropped to the bitty's arm he was missing one of his arms. "Please, doctor! He's a stray and I've been feedin' 'im, and I can't let him go to no kill shelter! Please doctor, promise me you'll care for him. I ain't got no money and my parents hate animals an' don't like bitties! He's just a stray I've been feedin', promise me you'll take him. He deserves all the good an' in the world and I can't give that to him. He's plenty friendly doc. Please take care of him." The boy pleaded, you almost wanted to call Bitty protective services when you saw the missing arm. Though the boy seemed honest and the bitty didn't seem to fear him, and even seemed almost comfortable in the boy's presence.
As the teenager left, you were stunned. Half the bitty's was marred and reminded you of a melted ice-cream cone. Glitched pixels leapt and shrouded his left eye, a common trait you noted in Geno bitties. You supposed it was a hereditary trait. "What's your name?" You mused, flicking your hands over the sink to dry them. You were still stunned over the arrival over this new bitty as he sat on the counter by your case of medical tools.
The bitty gave you an awkward chuckle. "The name's Melon." Melon huh? You were surprised. "Friends call me Melon." He held out his hand supposedly for you to shake. You were hesitant expecting the old whoopie cushion in the hand trick other bitties gave you and were pleasantly surprised when that wasn't the case. His small hands were cold yet cool in yours. His genus of bitty reminded you of a Sansy, though you often found Genos were much more chill and less distrustful than Sansy's.
The guy seemed more chill about this than you, and all honesty he was less trigger-happy with puns than the Sansy's. You haven't heard him utter a single joke since you met him. You gave the bitty your name and he seemed to hum in response. You asked him the question that had been eating at your mind. "How'd you lose your arm?" He was nonchalant as he tugged his tattered scarf tighter around his neck.
"I was born without it." He said honestly. "I was the only one born in my litter with only one arm, so when they first saw it my first family tossed me out and left me there on the streets. It was easy with Jonathan; he always came and cared for me, though he's going out of state for college soon." The bitty shrugged; he seemed not to want to talk about it, and honestly you didn't want to press him any further. He seemed content to watch the angel fish, and the neon tetras swim in the tank behind you. You never knew what compelled humans to evolve and breed genetically glow in the dark fish.
The day grew on as Melon comforted the bitty's who were nervous for their check-ups. He was your little helper. Whenever you needed something, he helped you get it, whenever you'd administer vaccinations or liquid vaccines to patients, Geno was there to distract them. You both had a routine by the end of the day.
You brought him in your hand down the hallway to the waiting room, where the exit was. You both stopped in front of the receptionists desk and saw quite the calamity outside. A group of bitty rights activists were outside. They were raucous, chanting, waving signs, and protesting outside. They were all yelling about something. They all held signs regarding bitty reproductive rights, how it was cruel to neuter and spay bitties without giving them a choice, a part of you agreed, bitty's were sentient creatures, however, violence was never the answer!
One threw a rock, shattering the glass, shattering the glass wall of the clinic, the rock catapulted through the wall, nearly maiming you. With a dizzying swirl of magic you were teleported to the side. Melon... he saved you. A stranger. You saw as he reasoned with the crowd. He somehow managed to hold off the crowd without injuring anyone. Once the police was called, you brought him home.
Melon... your savior. You could get used to his presence.
(Hope you don't mind I named the bitty! Sorry if it bothers you.)
