It's both interesting and sad to me how early it's shown that Nine doesn't consider New Yolk home. He gives up on it so easily, pretty much as soon as he finds another option. He's so excited to live in a place with nothing and no one just because it could be something better.

His optimistic attitude only changes once Sonic mentions New Yolk. He's faced so much callousness and cruelty growing up that he thinks of this barren desert more as home than the place he grew up.

There's sense of isolation and alienation so strong that he's felt connection with no one in his community before. No one except Sonic. In all his talk about the Grim, he always includes Sonic. He wants to make it a world for them.

Sonic is a key part of his idea of home. Despite him later saying he would "go it alone" and Sonic going back to the Grim is "entirely up to [him]", he still leaves it open to Sonic. And it says a lot to me that even though he "had work to do", he still went back to help Sonic fight. We don't see what made him change his mind, but given what he says about New Yolk, we can assume that it was only because it what Sonic wanted.

His attitude towards the Grim directly reflects on his attitude towards Sonic. The Grim is home because it could be a place for Sonic and him. He leaves that potential home for Sonic. He makes palm trees and a hammock presumably for Sonic. Everything is, at least in part, for Sonic. It's only until Sonic seriously betrays him does Nine say it's for him alone. And even then, he still wants Sonic.
