Track Day Review #5: Zandvoort August 2015
I went to Zandvoort for a two day track event hosted by Motorsport Lifestyle on the 15th and 16th of August. It was nice to be back at Zandvoort with my own car, tools and spare parts, after going to Mettet last month on just the bike. It is definiltey inspires more confidence.
The Plan
I had a very basic plan set out for the first day (I originally was only planning on attending a single day - more on that later). Basically, I wanted to focus on a single item per session. The schedule was:
Session 1: - Warm up, get familiar to the track
Session 2: - Body position
Session 3: - Trail braking
Session 4: - Trying different lines on the track
Session 5: - Hot laps
Performance Review
Weather
The weather forecast in the week leading up to the trackday was terrible. Everything was prediciting rain, but thankfully on the day we had no rain! Though the track was a little damp in places in the first session...
Another Crash
After about 10 minutes on the track, in the very first session, I made a stupid mistake and took a corner a little too tight - and hit a damp/wet white line. I immediately lost the front end, and almost got run over by another rider behind me!
Thankfully I wasn't hurt and the bike only had a bent footpeg, which I quickly fixed.
Back on the track
I had the bike ready for the second session but my confidence was completely gone. I felt like I'd never been on a motorcycle before. I had absolutely zero confidence in the front wheel, even though I knew I had the crash because of wet conditions. My personal best at Zandoort is 2:10, but even after 3 more sessions, I was struggling to get under 2:20. Honestly, I was very disappointed in myself and my abilities.
Final Two Sessions
Thankfully Sarah came to the track at lunch time, and with her support and encouragement, I ended up hitting 2:14 in the last session. While I was still annoyed that I wasn't even close to my personal best, I was happy that some of my confidence was back.
I originally only planned on going to a single track day. But after the crash and my lack of confidence, I decided it would probably be a good idea to get back on the track as soon as possible - so I booked the next day.
Second Day
By the end of the second day I regained my confidence and ended up matching my personal best of 2:10. I also got to focus on some specific things in some fo the sessions, mostly working on my body position so I was more comfortable in the corners.
Conclusion
I'm disappointed with myself due to the silly mistake that I made in the very first session, but much like my previous (and first) crash - I've learnt a lot from it, and it means that it is unlikely that I'll make the same mistake again. I must look at the positives! I also got great footage of the crash, which is also a good thing!
Preparing the bike for Zandvoort tomorrow.
Afternoon trip.
Track Day Review #4: Mettet July 2015
I visited Mettet on the 3rd of July for another track day. This time was a little different: I was on a group trip with a bunch of Ducati's, so no car, so trailer, no spare parts or tools, and no track fairings.
Being there on just the bike was already a little uncomfortable, but the temperatures were 40°C on the previous day and were set to reach 37°C during my track day.
Performance Review
My first session went really well. The temperatues were around 25°C and I felt really comfortable on the bike. I had watched a lot of videos on Youtube leading up to the track day and that helped me get a good feel of the track, as it was my first time at Mettet.
My GoPro only recorded half the session, but I remember that I was hitting 1:17 at the end of the session.
My First Crash
The second session didn't go so well. After 4 or 5 laps I was starting to get comfortable on the bike again, but then I low sided in the second corner. The bike just slid from under me. Myself and the bike slid on the track about 4m and then went into the gravel, where I stopped.
I have no injuries, and frankly, the bike came out pretty well too. I remember thinking 'mid-slide' that I hoped the bike would not flip, causing damage to both sides of the bike. After a little inspection, I found that my fork, swing arm and bar end sliders saved most of the bike. Somehow, I did not damage the tank - which was lucky. The left fairing got scraped up, along with some of the engine casing, my clutch lever got bent and the gear shifter and foot peg got completely snapped off.
I was very relaxed after the crash. I'm not sure why. I think I felt it was quite exciting, and a great learning experience. Unfortunately, being on a group track with stock fairings and no trailer, it wasn't an ideal situation. But thankfully there was a Ducati dealer nearby, so I managed to replace the gear shifter and foot peg within 1 hour.
After the Crash
I muscled up the courage (or stupidity) to go back onto the track for the remaining 4 sessions. My times dropped to around 1:25 as I simply didn't feel comfortable on the bike anymore (and didn't want to drop it again). I truely hope that my confidence is not gone at my next track day...
The Reason
After the crash I chcked my tire pressure and the rear tire was 2.6, when cold - which is far too much. The tire was just fitted and so there was too much pressure put into the tire, and I stupidly did not check it before I rode on the track. I also believe I am not leaning off the bike enough, causing too much lean, and then loosing grip.
Things I learnt
Always check tire pressure before and after each session
Never go to a track day without the car, trailer, tools and track fairings
