his heart skipped the second devon spoke, and sunny buried his face deeper into the curve of his neck like that alone could hide how obvious he was. god, he cared about him so much it almost made him feel sick with it. after he’d pulled devon into his lap that night, months ago, everything else had blurred together into soft confessions, lazy kisses, and enough affection to leave sunny dizzy over what to even do with it all. when devon teased him, sunny tipped his head just enough to press a quick kiss to his cheek. “you really think that was a stupid question?” he laughed softly. “i was trying to be pragmatic, okay?” which was ridiculous, honestly. sunny had never been pragmatic a DAY in his life. he threw himself into things headfirst, all teeth and want and reckless devotion. but devon felt easy in a way that scared him a little. natural. like falling asleep somewhere safe for the first time in years. eventually he pulled his arms away, immediately missing the warmth, so he settled for lacing their fingers together and tugging devon toward the couch instead. sunny dropped onto the cushions first, then lifted both hands toward him in an unapologetically grabby gesture. “c’mere,” he mumbled. “missed you.” they were both so busy lately that every second together felt borrowed. the moment devon settled against him, sunny melted. warm and content in the way a cat probably felt stretched out in sunlight. his fingers drifted through devon’s hair automatically, slow and affectionate. “how’ve things been?” he asked quietly. “how’re things with your brother?”
Devon thinks about the very first time that he kissed Sunny and how the world seemed to melt all around him. Whatever anxieties had his mind in disarray seemed unreasoned. Devon wondered if kissing Sunny had been the very cure to his own ailing mind, but knew it was hopeless to associate a living creature as a cure for something fundamentally fragmented within him. Either way, he was willing to test the running theory that kissing Sunny would be the very thing that saves him. Selfishly, selfishly, selfishly.
There has never seemed to be enough of Sunny. A heavenly presence that is lightly peppered in small segments of his life, and Devon greedily pleads with whatever higher power for just a little more time. A quiet chuckle escapes him, hazel eyes rolling when Sunny speaks in his peculiar, playful manner. Sunny has been one of the few to see the life in Devon. He deliberately saves these shades of himself for the people Devon considers special enough to witness it. "Quit being pragmatic," Devon teasingly scolds.
His gaze sticks to Sunny as he maneuvers to the couch. A brighter smile surfaces, and Devon can't recall the last time he's smiled as often as he does in the moments he spends with Sunny. It doesn't take long for him to topple down next to Sunny, shifting anxiously for a moment before lying out across his lap. Sunny's hands card through his hair, and Devon allows his eyes to flutter shut in pure bliss. "I've missed you," he admits, his voice gentle and quiet.
A soft sigh escapes him. If there is anything that Devon hates to talk about, it's the dynamic between him and Noah. It was complicated. Messy. The kind of thing that strikes his heart in a way that makes it race in his chest. "Things are okay," he hums. "Things could be better with Noah, but I don't really wanna get into that right now." His eyes flutter open, peering up towards Sunny. "Just wanna enjoy my time with you."
"depends on how much of my fuckin' backstory you've unlocked," he snorted. "If we're at level ONE, I grew up in florida. if we're at, like, level FIVE, i can tell you i'm from nebraska." he was being entirely unserious, expression tilting into something almost amused.
"Oh? There are levels?" Whitaker teases, a subtle grin curling the ends of his lips. There's a glimmer in his eyes at the mention of Nebraska, like somebody might finally understand him for all he is. "Nebraska? Really? What part?" Gentle prodding, his arms crossed carefully at his chest.
“okay, see? that’s WAY worse.” a laugh escaped her, head shaking a little as she leaned back in her chair. “sage just overshares. you were apparently out there raisin’ the dead in elementary school.” their grin lingered for a second before it softened. “he actually wants to MEET YOU, by the way. keeps askin’ about you, which is kinda impressive for a three-year-old whose biggest concern is currently dinosaurs and apple juice.”
"You think so?" Luke teases, light laughter woven within the lighthearted inquiry. Honeyed gaze narrows, playfully, like there's no real weight in the fact that her proposition doesn't make him horribly anxious. "Meet me?" He echoes the question, letting the syllables reverbate through the polished confines of his mind. "I mean, I'd love too. I'd like to think my biggest concerns are, also, dinosaurs and apple juice."

"his shoulders dropped, and he rubbed the back of his neck. "i just – really don't wanna be a BUMMER, dev." a beat. "i don't wanna ruin the mood..."
"You're not being a bummer," Devon assures, a subtle shrug pulling tenderly at his broad shoulders. "How many times have you been there for me when I was going through some shit? It's not a bummer at all." A beat. "I promise."
"nobody has everything figured out." it's not pity, she's always been pretty matter of fact. so she shifts closer, and laughs when cora jumps up from the ground to climb into his lap. "but where do you wanna start ?? i'm pretty good at solving shit, and cora's here for emotional support."
"That's true." Her words hold weight, something that Devon really clings to in his fleeting moments of uncertainty. Slender hands reach out to gently brush through Cora's fur, the subtle vibration of her soft purrs keeping him grounded in the moment. "I just feel like no matter what I do, I can't help Noah. I just feel.." He trails off, finding the right word to pin to the stirring in his chest. "Helpless? Useless? I don't know, maybe something right there in the middle of all of that."
her tongue traces the back of her teeth, his laughter sliding between her rib cage and settling. "y'know i work really hard to be this balance of alarmingly stable and absolutely unhinged." she grins, manicured nails trailing lightly against his arm. "so i guess what i'm sayin' is good save."
Elias watches her, the minute details, like the way her tongue traces her teeth and how her gaze seems like she's sizing him up to eat him alive. He's fine with that. Always has been. "It's a respectable talent, doll," he teases, a smirk coiled diligently at the corners of his lips. He's quiet for a moment, falling into the feeling of her nails raking against his skin. "You'll be the death of me, y'know? Matter of time before you're going to be diggin' my damn grave."
noah always needs something to do with his hands. he's outrunning paralysis all the time. it's embarrassing, really. powerhouse hockey player who can't get out of bed. catatonic. stupid. but he's not thinking about that right now !! "'course i'll let you." a laugh curls at the edges of his lips, and for an instant he looks more NORMAL. like he hasn't been oscillating between sleeplessness and night terrors that are supposed to be leashed by chemicals, and his hands don't vibrate with a need to do something – anything at all – to keep him from being pulled under. "when i buy a car ?? i don't even have that many cars ?? " playing dumb never works, noah !!
Luca recognizes the signs because he's been there once or twice before. The callouses on his hands are a testament to his inability to sit with stillness whenever his mind began to work faster than his body. The nights he'd spend on the rink, working himself to the bone because being alone would send him into the arms of something dangerous. There's a distant look that Luca gives Noah, like a conversation could be had just by their shared glances alone. Luca doesn't realize he's been quiet until he opens his mouth to speak again. "Do you think I'm stupid?" He's laughing, but the concern is evident in the way he looks at Noah. "Seriously, Noah, do you think I'm an idiot?"
jesse's pretty sure he knows the vanek brothers about as well as ANYONE could. he's seen that wide eyed look that devon gets when he starts panicking about noah. he's seen that heartbroken way noah tries to smile through it. it helps, he thinks, to be someone with his own sordid history– the relationship between his sister and his mother that he keeps TRYING to fix feels likes a bomb he's been trying to diffuse for years. "the kid's perceptive. it's not like he doesn't KNOW." he replies, unsure if that's particularly helpful. "yeah – somedays i don't think reagan and i are ever gonna get to the other side." he explains, "but then i look back and – we've already come so far. can't imagine that's not the same for you two." a humorless laugh parts his lips. "she used to think i was a fuckin' traitor. never wanted to see me again, i think." it's not the kind of information he'd offer up in any other circumstance. "like i picked a side and it wasn't hers." a hand cards through his hair, "but i think – maybe i watched too many movies or something– but i kind of think older brothers are ALWAYS picking their siblings sides, even when they don't know how." he's trying to be helpful – this is usually where he'd start bouncing ideas off his cat. "of the shit i've seen, you and noah have been TRYING to pick each other the whole time."
Devon doesn't really know the extent of how much Jesse knows, but he imagines it's more than he would naturally assume. Despite Noah's heavy guard, Devon has always believed his brother held a stronger inclination to open up about the things that haunt both of them. The weight of his words sits heavy in his chest, like a ton of bricks stowed away between skin and bone. So badly does he wish to open his mouth and release the weight, but it never seems to come out. His silence is deafening. Demanding. "I guess we have come pretty far," Devon shrugs. He thinks about it. Really thinks about it. The brothers went from not speaking to slowly tracing the edges of their respective feelings about the aftermath. Devon chuckles, and it sounds more sad than amused. He thinks about Noah and their fumbling days as children, and how that sentiment bleeds into their adulthood. "I suck at telling Noah anything, and I don't think he understands the way that I show that I care and always have," he admits, his voice quiet. "He likes to talk about it, and that just makes it all too real for me. I can't do it."
noah tries not to rub it in, but he's generally pretty good at reading people. couple that with knowing the details of everything devon refuses to talk about, and suddenly perceptive becomes well founded theory. his gaze drops, and something like frustration burns when his brother mentions it being easy for him. "it's not easy for me." it comes out way more vulnerable than he wants to to. for someone so sure, he sounds so fucking small. "it's worth it anyways." isn't that at the core of what went wrong here ?? devon disappeared, but noah's been chasing after him his whole life. he wanted to be seen in a way only his brother could. "i mean – yeah. i feel guilty CONSTANTLY, y'know." a shake of his head, "should've been smarter, shouldn't have gotten you into so much trouble, should have told someone –" a beat, "kinda think there's plenty of guilt to go around, but i don't think either of us are the bad guy." a stuttering breath pulls through him. "somedays i think the only reason i got through any of it was because you were there – even when you weren't, y'know ??" his psychiatrist would probably be proud !! "an' maybe i feel like if i just told you what he did to me –" noah's too vulnerable all over again. stupid. "even if you wouldn't have said anything for you – you would've done it for me. think that part kind of feels the worst. because i couldn't– i didn't just tell you." oh, he's totally going to puke as soon as he's alone.
It sits with him like a quiet apparition in the corner of every room. Whenever Devon notices bruises on Noah's skin from a rough game, everything comes back in violent flashes. The feeling of helplessness plagues him and rinses his nervous system clean of regulation and composure. Devon falls back into the same mindset he possessed as a child, scared and begging to be larger than life. The compulsion to stand in front of Noah to take every hit still stings when the threat no longer breathes. Devon shakes his head, eyes pinched shut. "You didn't do anything wrong, Noah. I'd take a thousand hits all over again if it meant keeping you from having to be on the receiving end," he admits, his voice strained beneath the pressurized tension that evokes a sharp ache at the back of his head. A heavy sigh ripples past his lips, uneven and unstabilized. Every nerve ending feels as if it had been set to flame, and every joint aches with a reminder of the pain he had succumbed to for the sake of keeping Noah in one piece. Devon meets Noah's gaze, and the revelation comes crashing like a tidal wave. No amount of his efforts could have ever spared Noah from becoming fragmented by the abuse. His hands clench into his fists by his sides, fingernails splitting at the calloused skin of his palms. "All I have ever wanted for you was to have the peace I never could have had." There's a brief pause, a quiet moment of internalized contemplation and reflection. "I failed you, and I can't ever apologize enough to you for that."

"Where did you say you were from?" The inquiry glides from his mouth with an ease that feels unfamiliar. Blonde brow quirked, the subtle ache of intrigue that rises, gently, to the surface. "Never thought I'd run into someone with similar interests."

"hey, i'm not THAT unstable !!" a grin cracks across her features. "just unstable enough to be fun. and hot enough to back it up."
"I said a little unstable!" He laughs, bright blue eyes rolling in the slightest. "I've dealt with heavily unstable, and I don't think I got it in me to do that shit again. You're the perfect dose of unstable, babe."
"aw, don't be jealous." a laugh pulls through him. "maybe i'll let you drive it." noah’s alwas had such a propensity for cars. as far as he's concerned, it was only a matter of time before he really got into resoration, and he swears he's trying not to fall in on himself again. "maybe i'll let you watch me work on it, too."
"You'll let me?" Luca echoes, a brow raised. It's endearing, really, Noah's inability to be still for longer than five minutes. There's a brief moment where Luca doesn't speak, but just keeps his eyes trained on Noah. He's looking for something that won't settle to the surface until it's far too late. "You know, you worry me when you get like this," Luca admits, softly.
