Genetically Accurate Trees: Pt. 1
Welcome to a series that will, hopefully, not get dropped like the rest have. I have the first 3 trees mapped out already, I just need to put together visuals and write out genes. Currently, I have Firestar's tree written out for the most part, as well as bits at the top of Tigerstar and Graystripe's trees. To get the visuals of the genes done quicker, I'll be using a cat maker picrew by @littlehungrywarriorcats. I do plan to try and draw the cats, or at least their heads, to get a better look at the colors. Especially in Firestar's tree, since the picrew doesn't have a good way to show high rufousing.
Anyway, introductions to this series aside, time for the first section of the Firestar tree. I like to start with Crystal and her non-existent mate Mocha.
Crystal is a ginger and white she-cat with blue eyes. However, I want Jake to be black-based so Princess stays non-tortie. Jake can only get his allele for non-ginger from Crystal, since the ginger alleles are sex-linked and Mocha can only give Jake a Y to make him male.
So, Crystal's now black, and then we make her a tabby. While I could attempt to make her Somali of some kind, her white messes with breed standards and I think the black stripes add to her looking like a crystal.
The reddish brown between her stripes would be darker, but I'm gonna use the darker golden swatch in the picrew to show a cat has that higher rufousing. Crystal's genotype would then be: B/-,o/o,D/-,S/w,A/-,Mc/-,ta/ta,C/-,l/l (this isn't her full genotype, but a simplified version that currently only shows the expressed genes).
"B" for black, two "o" to make her non-ginger because Crystal is X/X, "D" for non-dilute, "S/w" for low white, "A" to make her a tabby, and then "Mc" to make her mackerel, two "ta" for non-ticked(this is here because I made her mate ticked), a "Ta" at all would make her ticked, "C" for fullcolor(I like points, so I always write this locus out), and two "l" to make Crystal longhair. We don't know what she's has under her dominant alleles, so we'll leave those blank for now. As long as those blanks are there, we can come back and plug in recessives when needed later down the line.
All we know is an author said he's brown, so we have to use headcanons for his design. Since I didn't make Crystal Somali, let's make Mocha one! He's now a chocolate Somali. Somalis are always "A/A,Ta/Ta". Jake and Firestar can't be homozygous for tabby and ticked due to their children, but Jake needs to get that ticked from somewhere, and Mocha can easily be made homozygous. I'm not doing Jake's siblings since they have no design description, so they don't matter when deciding Mocha's genes.
Mocha is now "b" for chocolate, "o/Y" for non-ginger, "D" for non-dilute, "w/w" for no white, "A/A" for tabby, "Ta/Ta" for ticked, "C/C" for fullcolor(I don't know if point or albino are possible in the breed), and "l/l" for longhair. This makes Mocha's genotype: "b/-,o/Y,D/-,w/w,A/A,Ta/Ta,C/C,l/l".
Lastly for this post, we have their son Jake. Again, Jake's two siblings Ferris and Whiskers don't have a design on the wiki, so I'm not doing them here. I might, as a bonus post in the future, try to give the designs and make up family trees for them.
Just like his mom, Jake is high rufoused. Rufousing is polygenetic, so I'm not really showing it in the genotypes. Since Mocha is homozygous for ticked, he has to give Jake a "Ta", which makes Jake heterozygous ticked. He's still got less stripes than the typical tabby, but more than a homozygous ticked tabby would. Crystal is homozygous for non-ticked, so can only give Jake a "ta", which make him heterozygous.
He has to gain a little white for future generations, and Crystal has that white to give (this is mostly so I don't have to give Quince and Sandstorm non-canonical white)
Jake's resulting genotype is now: "B/-,o/Y,D/-,S/w,A/-,Ta/ta,C/-,l/l". The gaps will be filled in soon, trust me.
Anyway, that's all for this part. Next will be Jake's kits with Quince, just to get them out of the way.
