unfortunately I am not attractive enough to identify as a hot mess but I am definitely a room temperature inconvenience
You have to let people love you. You have to let people get to know you. You have to let people help you. Being so completely selfless that you try to erase yourself off the face of the planet and never ask for anything and reject everybody's offers of support makes you very hard to love! Unfortunately. Emptying yourself out of everything that makes you, you is not actually what your loved ones want from you, generally. They want to make you happy! They will be so so sad if you don't give them the chance. It's not all selfish. I promise.
In middle age [Auden's] face indeed became a mask - a ‘wedding cake left out in the rain’ is how he liked to describe it. Hé looked, he said, like ‘an unmade bed’. That face, that ruined, piteous, covetable, comfortable face - ‘I have a face of putty,’ he told Stephen Spender, ‘I should have been a clown’ — has long been a source of fascination to writers and artists. The philosopher Hannah Arendt remarked that it was ‘as though life itself had delineated a kind of face-scape to make manifest the “heart’s invisible furies”’ […] According to Randall Jarrell, Auden looked ‘like a disenchanted lion’. The poet Gavin Ewart charted his appalled fascination with Auden’s face - what another poet, John Hollander, calls simply ‘The Face’ — in a poem titled ‘Auden’: Photographed, he looked like Spencer Tracy / or even Danny Kaye - / in the late Forties. / But later it was wiser to look the other way. A young David Hockney, asked to sketch a portrait of Auden, was absolutely horrified: ‘I kept thinking, if his face looks like this, what must his balls look like?

in my next life, may i never know the sound of my own voice explaining how i deserve to be loved.

to anyone reading this: may you find someone who stays consistent when life gets busy, who doesn’t disappear when things get hard, and who remembers you even in the middle of their stress.
unironically love the phrase “but I’m being so brave about it” because truly, like, what other choice do we have in this wretched existence? what a beautiful way to remind yourself to keep going, even if only out of spite
oh my god. og my god. the symbolism of it all
