You know, with the end if Gravity Falls, I've been thinking a lot about leaving this blog. If anyone else wants to leave, you totally can. As soon as I can get on a computer and not just a mobile device, I'm out. I had fun though, for what it's worth. I guess I just don't see a point in having an inactive blog in my bloglist, it clogs it up, yknow? I'm still a little confused as to why survivors can ship things and non-survivors can't. You say anyone who isn't a survivor is automatically glorifying or excusing the abuse, but isn't someone who's lived through it even MORE likely to have problem distinguishing fiction from reality? Doesn't a survivor looking at BillDip stuff just normalize it to them, tell them it's normal and okay? (I'm a survivor, for the record)

Survivors typically look at ships like that to depersonalize their trauma but still work to process it in a less personal and safer manner. Others develop it as a coping method that reenacts their abuse in a safe environment where they have control and are not in any real danger. Most survivors are aware that what happened to them was awful, and can distinguish the line between fiction and reality, though for others this may not be a healthy coping mechanism. It’s really kind of a case-by-case situation because everyone copes differently. In my opinion, though, survivors aren’t normalizing their abuse, they’re learning to understand their own trauma safely, or generally cope.

I hate people who say we shouldn’t be upset about problematic material in children’s shows “because it’s a children’s show”……that is literally why it’s so damn crucial that we care…..because SURPRISE! children’s media is extremely important and influential!

Brilliant comic relief characters. While their main purpose is clearly there to get laughs out of the kids, some of the jokes and stuff with those two make me laugh. Not to mention, I totally H.C. them as gay.

I just went through saying that transphobia and heterophobia is more than a synonym for hatred. There’s something called microaggressions, which are, as google puts it: “everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or. unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their.“

Microaggressions, when in the context of being directed at the trans community or other oppressed groups, contributes to a harmful environment that becomes the breeding grounds for misinformation, ignorance, and potentially violent acts. So, yes, tropes like “man in a dress” is a transphobic microaggression which has a snowball affect.

Uh- you know Alex Hirsch has tried to put a Trans background character AND a gay couple in the show right? He IS supportive of the LGBT+ community and just because you don't see him support it doesn't mean he doesn't do it. With that logic, if no one saw me break my arm I guess it didn't happen. Also, the reason those background characters didn't make it into the show is because DISNEY shut them down afraid that the other countries the show airs in would be upset and they would lose money.

Did you know there are different levels of transphobia and homophobia? He can be supportive and still misinformed. Nobody is 100% unproblematic, so him being supportive of gay and trans people doesn’t excuse potentially transphobic jokes and heteronormative plots. That’s really all I’m going to say here because I could essentially link you an outdated meme and you would give it about the same amount of consideration.

Your entire argument smacks of fallacious insecurity and reaching for justifications to be offended. The whole thing could be discarded as 'trivial bullshit' with the simple reiteration of 'Holy shit, calm the fuck down, it's a fucking kids show. It's not deep or introspective, it's a throw-away sight gag.' Seriously, let it go. Hell, go outside, meet actual people. I kind of want to point out that one of your defenses is that it’s a kid’s show, and we shouldn’t be so critical of it. I disagree. Shows for kids should be have just as much thought put into them as any other show on television. Kids are developing and retaining what is and is not acceptable at that age, and it’s important that they learn the right things. However, you won’t care about that, and you’ll crawl back into your own little cave where likeminded people will tell you I’m wrong and to dismiss every word I say without actually giving anything I say a shred of thought.

Guess what? I’m not reaching for reasons to be offended. If I were, i’d be complaining about something totally batshit like Dipper’s shorts are oversexualizing him, or that the fact that Stanford Pines wears glasses is offensive because (insert some ridiculous far-fetched bullshit only some redditor troll could make up because nobody is actually like this ever and this is a hyperbolic example to try and trivialize people’s legitimate concerns).

As a final point, this is the fucking internet. Let’s take a look at the outfit in question. It’s definitely on a emo/scene side of fashion– HOWEVER it has feminine qualities. Revealing shorts, eye makeup, the piercing, and, most blatantly, the pink “sassy GIRL” shirt. Even if Toby wasn’t somehow trans, that shirt was made solely for ppl to laugh because WHAT, HES NOT A GIRL, HAHA. Which is, sorry to break it to you anon– Transmisogynistic. Becuase the joke is that they are wearing feminine clothing that, in a gender role-based society, would be reserved for females when they are traditionally male presenting, and that in itself isn’t bad if done right (like in the Steven Universe episode Song for Sadie, where the audience cheered and didn’t question the dress). This however, was clearly meant as an out-of-the blue occurrence that garners negative attention and a cheap laugh from the viewers. So, yeah, I’m not reaching that far if I see the transphobic undertones that also resonate with my personal experiences.

When I, a trans girl, saw that scene I burst out laughing. Because I knew people like that in high school - who wore bad makeup, had obnoxious piercings, spikes on their shoes, and all that gaudy stuff he had on. Almost all of them were guys. It’s making fun of a fashion trend - it’s not that deep because it’s not making fun of women. The joke is a 40+ year old man wearing clothes that are aimed at teens and wearing them mismatched. It’s just like that “How do you do fellow kids” gif - an adult trying to do something that is not age appropriate…

To address the above post, yeah, my wording was a little warped. I went back in a later ask and tried my best to reword shit because it came out wrong. /I/ don't think the clothing is feminine or meant exclusively for girls, but that's how society as a whole sees it still, so that's the basic of the joke.

With THAT out of the way, I'm glad that you aren't offended, but that doesn't negate the feelings of other trans women that may have been. It CAN be construed as Toby trying to fit in with the young kids, that's actually a good point. HOWEVER, I and other trans people still immediately got the impression of someone rejecting someone else's identity, mainly due to our own personal experiences, and you being alright with it and not seeing that side of the joke doesn't change how others interpreted it. Sorry.

Also- “make your own things, don’t complain about existing things” is kinda silly. People can talk shit about an awful movie all they want (because they wasted their time and money on it), they don’t have to go out and make their own movie instead to fix the flaws they criticize. Critiquing should not be limited to those making media, but those consuming media too. What’s the alternative? Just ignore awful flaws? There are problems within fictional stories that deserve to be complained/ talked about

But sure, complaining about a shitty show/movie I saw is obviously taking up HOURS of my time every day, which I should be using to practice drawing instead. All my time, GONE!

Also don’t you think a lot of people would make there own things if they had the money and clout to do so?  As a screenwriter with a tv show I’ve been slowly writing/rewriting over the last 5 years it’s very frustrating to see show runners act like this.  They say “Let them eat cake” but then we’re the ones who have to plant the wheat, plow the fields, and mill the grain just to get one of the basic components of the cake.  Then you have to get the rest of the ingredients together, cordinate them, process them (ie bake them), and then after you’re done distributing tens of millions of cakes maybe then you’ll get a slice.  I guess this is a fancy way of saying @downwithhirsch.

Honestly this is kind of sad, considering I, and many other people I know who do criticize media are people who are working on their own creative story ideas. I happen to also be an especially spiteful person that intends to go out of my way to make better media than what has been provided. This is just a certain creator trying to deflect some (likely justified) criticism by implying that criticizing is all those people do. We, as viewers and creators, need to look around and criticize our peers. We need to learn from each other and know what boundaries are unacceptable to cross, we don't need to be dismissive of criticism and we certainly dont need to project a selfish mentality of "If you don't like it, make your own!"

Not all of us have the means to produce our own stories just yet, and that likely won't deter a lot of us (it certainly wont deter me). However, in the meantime, it's not wrong for others to demand more quality media.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm not going to be a creator like Mr. Hirsch in the sense that I'll be ignorant and brush off people's opinions when they're upset and look to me to learn from my mistakes. I encourage all of you to do the same. ~Mod Dipper

What's your favorite episode of Gravity Falls?

Personally, I like The Inconviencing. It’s nice to kind of see Dipper and Mabel interact and meet the older teens for the first time. It’s just well written and definitely holds a spooky element that is almost like the nostalgic feeling of goosebumps books. I also just generally enjoy cheesy scenes of teenagers being themselves and doing silly fun stuff, like putting mentos in soda, smoothie waterballoons, putting ice down someone’s clothes. It was just a nicely paced episode in my opinion. Not to mention, Mabel on Smile Dip? Who could hate that?

i think that i identify as a demiboy, but is it alright if i still use she/her pronouns? i've just been questioning my gender for a while and after reading your post i think i might be a demiboy, im gonna do more research on it and read up on it-

I’m not sure, actually. That could be the case, or you could be genderfluid/bigender. For my personal experience and for what sounds like others, a demiboy is someone who identifies as partially a boy, but the other part can’t be determined, it’s typically like. “I identify as male, mainly, but also.... something else?”.

You may want to look into it, because I’m no expert. Good luck and you’re valid!
