Chapter 17: Fracture and Conspiracy

In which Ominis overhears Sebastian scheming with a certain 4th year, and turns to Evan for help.

“Oh!” Sebastian began again, “and this sort of goes without saying, but… don’t mention this to anyone. If word got around… especially if it made it back to Ominis—he wouldn’t understand.”

“But he is your friend!” Barelli unexpectedly protested. It was a shock to hear, considering how amenable the boy had been so far. “Why would he not understand?”

“Ominis… frets about anything that might be related to the Dark Arts,” Sebastian said. “It will be better if he didn't know. I don’t want to worry him.”

Hikaru and Valerie!!

Hikaru grew up as a street kid in Japantown with his father, Juiki Ueno. Many of his childhood friends have grown up to join the Claws but Hikaru struggles with trying to uphold his father’s wish for him to not be a part of gang life.

Valerie (V, a nickname given by Jackie) grew up in a privileged household that primed her for the Corpo lifestyle. Her childhood was spent studying and grinding to live up to her mother’s expectations.

Unbeknownst to either of them, they actually share the same biological mother. This is only discovered after their parents’ death, when Hikaru and V meet as adults during the beginning of act one.

Evan let out a small puff of air that Ominis guessed was either a laugh or a huff. The boy tugged down Ominis’ hands and signed, Not too ugly?

Ominis gasped and pulled his hands away. “How could you say that? I would never think such a thing!”

Evan was laughing. He captured Ominis’ hand once more and pressed it to his smiling lips. Ominis let him, having regretted pulling his hands away at all.

Evan turned Ominis’ palm over to sign rapidly. “M”-“Y”—“T”-“U”-“R”-“N”.

“What?” Ominis asked, but then Evan’s hand touched his cheek. “Oh.” His warbling voice didn’t sound like his own.

It was a dream, Ominis surmised. It had to be, for when he turned his head over his shoulder, he saw Evan.

It was hard, in the midst of a dream, to sort out the logic of the subconscious. It mattered not that Ominis had been born without sight. It was enough that a part of him knew, in theory, seeing existed. And in his dream, all he could fathom was when he looked behind, he saw Evan. Saw the velvet softness of his smile, saw the smell of his warm body.

Ominis could hear him, too, the whisper of his breath passing over his lips, the shift of his weight, and a click as he opened his mouth to beckon.
