Life was never meant to be rough for Draco Malfoy. Born the only son to Lucius and Narcissa, being a Malfoy meant that he would have whatever he wanted — and oh, did Draco want it all. He was shown from a young age that, if he kicked and screamed loud enough, someone would eventually give him exactly what he wanted: money, toys, some kid’s lunch, whatever. He pointed to something shiny and it was his a moment later. Draco owned the world, and for eleven years, he felt like a prince.
This, of course, followed him to Hogwarts whether the school wanted it or not. He knew why people would befriend him: he was a Malfoy, and being associated with one of the most influential families in the wizarding world got you places. His father ingrained this fact into his head at an early age, so when he finally got to school, Draco didn’t bother making friends; he made associates instead. Draco had a posse rather than a friend group, and the moment he snapped his fingers people would do as they were told. The life was, admittedly, lonely — Crabbe and Goyle were probably his closest friends, and even then he knew they more than likely only hung around him for his name. Still, it was the price of wealth and fortune, so Draco paid it in full.
Everything changed when Lucius Malfoy failed. Draco, being young as he was, didn’t realize what his father had done until it was too late: he’d given a cursed book to one of his peers with the intention of setting cursed chaos upon Hogwarts. He was quickly found out and, with solid proof of what he’d done, sentenced to Azkaban. Draco considers that the downfall of the Malfoy family — with such a scandal behind their name, no one in their right mind wanted to associate with his family anymore. Connections were lost, his mother in disarray trying to keep order, and Draco’s reputation at school plummeted. Very few pureblood students wanted to openly associate with Draco; he wasn’t surprised when people even outside of his social circle began to shun him for his father’s actions. It was at that point Draco went from idolizing Lucius Malfoy to downright despising him for what he did to their family.
Since Lucius’ drastic mistake, Draco has made it his goal to bring a positive reputation back to the Malfoy family. He dedicated himself to his studies during school, becoming quite proficient in potions in addition to being Slytherin’s Seeker and prefect. What few friends he still felt he had, he clung to almost desperately; even still, he’s always afraid one wrong move will send them packing. After school, he forced himself to attend large events and galas with positive press to rebuild the Malfoy name in the public eye, and his engagement to Anastasia Dolohov (partially planned by his mother) would only further solidify his place among the pureblood elite once again.
Whether he agrees or disagrees with his Aunt’s policies as Minister for Magic is something he constantly debates internally. On one hand, Draco was raised to believe such pureblood ideologies. On the other hand, the last thing he feels he needs to do is associate himself with Bellatrix Lestrange more than their blood already does — years of repairing his reputation would go down the drain if anyone thought he was like his father. For now, Draco remains publicly neutral while internally agreeing with his aunt’s politics. The fact that he agrees with so many makes him nervous; the last thing he wants to do is become Lucius Malfoy 2.0.
