Look, comedy was apparently very different in 1977. That’s the only explanation I can think of for these panels. (Super Friends #5, 1977, by E. Nelson Bridwell and Ramona Fradon) – Graeme
Larry Davis was FUNNYMAN, the character Siegel & Shuster created in 1948 after they lost their first legal battle to regain the rights to the Man of Steel. SUPER-FRIENDS writer E. Nelson Bridwell was a comic book fan and history enthusiast so he would drop in these sorts of references from time to time. Jerry and Joe are no doubt the couple of mutual friends Larry shares with Superman.

BHOC: SUPERMAN FAMILY #188
This issue of SUPERMAN FAMILY introduced one of my legitimately favorite obscure and forgotten DC heroes, so it’s a noteworthy release to me. But we’ll get to that in a little while. It’s got a very nice, dynamic Jose Luis Garcia Lopez cover as well–JLGL was making some waves with is work in fandom circles, but still being largely outside of those, he mostly flew under my radar in these days. I…

BHOC: SECRET SOCIETY OF SUPER-VILLAINS #13

BHOC: SUPERMAN #321
I had been steadily enjoying Marty Pasko’s run as the writer of SUPERMAN just about since it began (I had missed/skipped his first issue.) This wasn’t a loud appreciation, I wasn’t waiting with baited breath for each new release. Rather, it had quietly become a title that I enjoyed each and every time I picked it up, and so I continued to do so regularly. The fact that Pasko was mixing in a…

BHOC: FLASH #259
A month had gone by, and so the mailman brought me my latest subscription copy of THE FLASH. This was getting towards the end of my subscription period. Now that I could, and was, visiting the 7-11 every Thursday when new comics dropped like clockwork, there wasn’t as much of a need to make sure I’d get every issue mailed to me. And on a few occasions I’d been vexed when a particular issue of…
