Big day in Italy today, today and tomorrow.

For those unaware, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for a referendum lasting between today and tomorrow regarding a major change to the constitution and how the judiciary body is handled, a body which the constitution demands has the highest degree of autonomy from the other bodies (parliament and government).

This reform consists in switching the election method of 2/3rds of magistrates from the regular selection by a commitee of judges to parliament-chosen individuals, in order to "keep the judiciary less biased".

I don't think it should be spelled out that this is not a good reform and that it would drastically alter the judiciary to support the current right wing government, who has been struggling against the judges because of its corruption.

I really hope this reform doesn't pass, and I can only hope that the italians on tumblr that do end up reading this agree.
