Right hand tried to reach his back, stopping at the mention of his father’s searching. Lucy bit her lower lip, choosing to kneel before the bed instead. It was better to just listen and be there, of course she didn’t have something to cheer him up but to stay. She didn’t know that kind of pain, yet she knew how loneliness felt.

He sniffles, rolling on his side and sitting up. Toughen up, he thinks as he wipes his nose on his sleeve. His eyes are red and looking somewhere far away.

“Lucy, did I do something wrong?” He asks vacantly. “If not, why do the important people in my life keep disappearing....?”

The boy puts his head in his hands and rubs his eye sockets until spots dance before his vision.

“... I don’t understand, really. You’re the one consistent element I have in my life...” It takes a moment of dreary silence, but slowly, he looks back up to her, something like inspiration or hope in a tiny smile he wore.

“But you’re no consolation prize, y’know? If you’re the only good thing to ever happen to me, then I can never be sad for too long!”

She listened intently, nodding at his words while fingertips tried to tangle with his. Eyes widened as he escaped from her arms, blinking in confusion. Well, she could understand it, too. He was too tired and too overwhelmed by those thoughts.

Lucy looked away for a few seconds, holding her urge to lay down with him. It was an habit to count on the other when something bad was happening, even if it was even harder for Natsu.

“ … Do you want to be alone for awhile? “

Yes. He does want to be alone. It wasn’t about if Lucy was there or not to support him, it was how he wanted to curl up and hide- and he didn’t want Lucy to see him like that.

“No. Stay with me.”

At the end of the day, Lucy was good for him. And even though it was painful to have her near right now, he would thank himself later.

“...It’s unjust.” He starts, biting his lip. “I only had him for a moment. It took ten years to find him and only ten minutes to lose him again-” His voice breaks. The boy grits his teeth as his hand grips a fistful of Lucy’s blanket. He feels like a kid again, and not in a nostalgic sense.

Natsu and Co. were going to arrive at Caracall Island in order to refill fuel and food and the like but spotted hostile military company from the continent Aracitacia (Bad Guys) and needed to quickly come up with a story bc they didn’t want those people to know that they’re from FT bc everyone. hates them. So (somehow) they covered up their guild marks in order to fool the silly tin people guarding the island’s harbor but they screwed that all up right away now didn’t they

He sighs deeply, only now noticing that he was holding his breath.

“How are you holding up.” A status report from her was vital before he could let himself break down. Holidays like these were hard on them both.
