i think one of the most chilling things about the animorphs for me is how quickly it established that these kids are never safe

like, even when they're not on missions, the two main places they can be are home and school. school has at least one controller in it, they know that from book two. and home? jake has a controller in his home, marco's dealing with his dead mom, rachel's dealing with a divorced parent and two younger siblings, and tobias lives in the woods and eats roadkill. cassie's the only one with a decent home life, which is (a reason) why the kids have meetings in her barn...meaning it's not safe from the war either

the happiest days of Paul's childhood were when he had Spot the dog, because for a time he had something to love and take care of who seemed to love him back. Paul loved Spot because Spot was a sweet, playful dog who was probably always happy to have his attention. in addition to his guilt he resents Spot for running because he thought Spot loved him. it felt like a betrayal when he jumped out of Paul's arms to get away from him. like Paul's love and care was thrown back in his face, the thanks he got was being abandoned.

Paul said that Whiskers was a mean cat, but was she really? or did Paul just not understand cat behavior and social cues? did he try to treat Whiskers like a dog and feel scorned when she reacted like a cat? Whiskers was probably mean to Spot because Paul didn't take the necessary steps and precautions for introducing new animals to each other - he was ten I bet he just brought Spot into the house without thinking twice. and Whiskers was probably scared of the strange, loud intruder!

at the end Paul compares himself to Spot because - although he accepts being labeled a cat - he sees himself as the ungrateful dog who ran away from someone who just wanted to love him. in reality he might've been more like Whiskers - misunderstood, mistreated, and unable to love Melissa the way she wanted him to.

I do think maybe people don't notice/care that starkid pretty much only writes straight relationships anymore because they're so invested in headcanoning characters as queer and like. that's actually not the same thing

these are great tags @ dr-docktor and you bring up a great point.

It shouldn't be on the actors to "confirm" things about the characters they play but rather the writers who wrote those characters in the first place. Furthermore, retroactively "confirming" queerness of characters doesn't change how they are still continually presented as a joke in their canon. The actors don't have that much sway over how their characters are written, they're still beholden to the writers and director choice.

This fandom tends to prop up these paltry handouts of the retroactive queering of these characters without thinking of the implications of such a thing. It lends far too much praise to the writers who do not attempt to think how it looks for their actually canonized queer characters to only be punchlines. As much as I love Mariah declaring all the characters she plays (save for Alice) as pansexual, that doesn't actually meaningfully change anything about the overall writing, which she has little to no power over.
