Even among outsiders of the Shimada, hair in shades beyond darkest obsidian or soft tones of brown like the earth is uncommon. When the middle child among the three cousins dyes his hair green as the grass, the fuss over it is unprecedented. She herself cannot help a small giggle when he shows it off to her, and departs the castle grounds before he can be stopped and scolded.
Several days is Genji gone, appearing only long enough in the middle of a night or two to gather a few belongings that she brings to him near the arcade when he asks.
Mitsuko has never understood Genji’s choices but admires his spirit regardless as a young child would.
Hanzo on the other hand, seems even more bitter towards his brother then usual, and she tries not to shrink back when she brings a pitcher of chilled tea. It is the eighth day, and as always he trains or sits by the sparring ground, especially as of late.
“Aniki..” Mitsuko begins, and sits down upon the mats near where Hanzo is with legs folded beneath her. Two cups are set down with care, pouring tea for both of them. “Are you still mad at Genji about his hair? Everyone seems upset about it..”
Her words rang through his mind. It made him realize that perhaps he was starting to become more like the elders. The one thing he had been trying to steer away from. Sure, he wanted to become a great leader, but he also wanted to change things for the better…. Maybe he was the fool for his own disapproval of his brother’s hair.
No wonder Genji had thought of him as “lame” as of recent.
“…. You know, you’re right!” Hanzo’s hands balled into fists as he looked up with determination in his eyes. “I am a dragon! And I’m tired of being caged!”
The sudden outburst is not what she is expecting and a hand is clamped over her mouth to keep from breaking out into a fit of childish giggling. It is almost a comical gesture, but one that she deeply appreciates. She cannot challenge the elders word on her own, only Hanzo can.
"I think I have an idea that may help. Would you give me a few hours?" Mitsuko lays a hand against Hanzo's knee as she pushes herself upright. "I'll call you in a little while okay?"

Hanzo’s eyes went wide when he saw the streak of green in her hair. “M-Mitsuko! What did you-” He paused and immediately covered his mouth with his hand. He looked around, making certain that they were both alone. His eyes fell back upon her. Not knowing what to think or how to feel about this.
“Wh-why did you…” He trailed off. In his mind, that hint of jealousy was returning. Being the heir to the clan, he would be severely punished if he attempted such behavior. Genji wasn’t exactly met with approval with his dye job. If they discover what Mitsuko did…
It wasn’t fair. Hanzo longed to be free of his father’s grasp. He hated being the “responsible” one.
Breathing a long sigh, he looked at Mitsuko. He tried to put on a stern face to show his disapproval, but it didn’t exactly come across that way. In fact, he looked more like a little kid who was bummed that he was left out of all the fun. “Don’t let anyone else see it.” He spoke with a lowered voice. “I’m sure the elders wouldn’t approve…”
"It's just one little streak. Why is it even that bad? it's a beautiful color." Mitsuko's hand drops to cover it back up regardless, and her bottom lip curves into a pout. She's heard the same again and again, such activities are disrespectful to one's self, and partaking in whatever Genji does out in the city is even worse.
"And why do they get decide what's wrong and what's not? Just because it's different doesn't mean it's wrong." She does trace the strand between two fingers out of sight. It is a gesture of solidarity with Genji, an internal longing for change that she unknowingly expresses, but hasn't fully committed to. "You're the dragon, and they aren't."

Because of reasons I'm making a Cyberpunk 2077 verse for Mitsuko.

“It… was childish of him.” He spoke with a light huff at the thought. Genji had been toying with the idea of coloring his hair, but Hanzo never thought that he would actually go through with it. Sure, he’ll admit that he wanted to have a good laugh about it when he first saw that ridiculous hair color, but in the back of his mind he knew that his father and the elders would be breathing down his neck with dishonor. If he himself were to even think about such an act, the elder Shimada brother would have been punished severely.
Perhaps, it was disappointment with a hint of jealousy that drew him to ultimately condemn Genji’s actions. Hanzo berated him. Telling him how much of an idiot he was and the clan would never accept this.
That was a few days ago. And still, Hanzo couldn’t bare to look his brother in the eye for multiple reasons. He knew his father wanted Genji to straighten up… or else. And truthfully, he didn’t want to know what that would actually mean for him. A part of him truthfully admired his brother’s rebellious nature. He was jealous that he wasn’t allowed to share his ambitions. No. His father saw to that. Being the firstborn and heir, if Hanzo so much as tried to be rebellious…
He shook his head, not wanting to think about any of it.
“He should have known better.” He said as he kept his eyes focused elsewhere. For some reason, he couldn’t bare to meet his cousin’s eyes either.
Once the anger has died down, Mitsuko wishes that maybe it will be dismissed, that maybe their lord and elders can be convinced it was simply a one time whim. In the depths of her mind she knows it is unlikely, Genji has grown more outrageous and more bold over the past few years.
Mitsuko longs to follow in his footsteps so often, sometimes she does when he spends hours in the arcade, and yet holds honor and training almost as close as Hanzo or their father does. She does not say how much it leaves her torn.
“Perhaps it was. But is a dragon meant to be caged?” She shifts to scoot a little closer to her elder on the tatami at his right side. Her tea is forgotten now, and her left hand threads through her hair to brush part of it back. Beneath soft brown strands is a single streak of green that she bares to him, one that none else have seen. It is the same shade of the middle child's, and she learns closer to try and meet Hanzo’s eyes. “I didn’t think it was so bad. The elders just.. don’t understand it. What young people do.”
