I will be drawing 1 piece of fanart for a Steven Universe AU every day, and tagging it with "Fanartpalooza" - the name this concept took on when @ask-whitepearl-and-steven did it a while back!

Anyone in the mood to read sapphic YA?

I'd love a few more people to join my test reader list please. I've written a science fiction YA novel about gay girls trying to find their way. (There is way more going on besides queer teen angst, but yes. Lots of queer teen angst.) Those of you who follow me know I'm a giant slobbering Steven Universe fan, and I'd love to say look! it's lesbians in space! but I think it makes more sense to say it is 1) Honestly not much like Steven Universe but 2) May be liked by the same people for the same reasons. It spends a lot of time in a conflicted lesbian's inner landscape and has a lot of heart. It's got a plot, a through line, several conflicts and resolutions, and plenty of character development, but it's also largely motivated by "can't these girls just kiss already??"

I have to be vague For Reasons but it's about a teenage girl who's from this race of humanish aliens that almost died out 600 years ago (because humans are buttheads). They have a set of cultural/spiritual goddess-oriented traditions that they take Very Seriously, and they're pretty obsessed with fertility in light of their status as an endangered species. Being secretly gay is kind of a problem for the main character, as you might imagine, so she's struggling with what maturity will mean for her when the story opens, and to make things worse there is suddenly a really hot new girl in her school who's human.

So that's what it's about and I'd love to have some authentic, engaged, emotionally intelligent, sincere readers who love queer literature and care about the heart of queer stories. I have my established circle of beta readers, but none of them are teenage gay girls (and none of them were even recently teenage gay girls), so I was hoping some of my followers were at least closer to the demographic I'm writing about and for. (You do not have to be a gay teenager, but it would help especially if you had the experience of growing up as one, especially if you grew up in a family where that made you different or contradicted your family's sincerely held religious or cultural beliefs. If this isn't you but you still love queer stories and sapphic coming-of-age situations, I'd love to have you.)

What to do and how this works:

I'll talk to you privately about where I can share the first few chapters with you

You can read them on your own schedule and just tell me what you think--anything from in-depth comments to basic impressions of what you liked/didn't like/were bored with/wanted to see more of is fine

You love queer fiction, especially for the YA demographic, and have some experience with it

You can offer first impressions, thoughts, questions, opinions, jokes, suggestions, vague anecdotes about what you relate to--anything that helps me make the book better or understand what I'm already doing right

You won't try to send me line editing (too much is still changing at this stage; nitpicking punctuation and word use comes later)

If you are an author, you're welcome to propose a critique-partner relationship with me and we can read each other's stuff

You are not doing this to try to collect a client for your business; if you have a side hustle or full-time job doing this kind of thing, you need to know upfront that I am only looking for volunteer readers, and am not interested in hiring professionals at this stage. About me (your humble author):

This is my 12th completed novel (oh my god, wtf)

So I swear the book is not a giant mess and it's actually pretty good (but I need outside opinions, always, every time)

I am a professional author--I got my first book deal in 2013, from a mainstream publisher--and I have representation with a literary agent. I kinda know what I'm doing and it's likely this book will actually go somewhere. So you could be one of the first to read an early version of something that might actually be on shelves, and you could make it better.

I identify as queer, but not lesbian. Some of the main character's experiences are pulled from my own life, but many are not.

The spiritual practice in the story is probably about 70% based on my experience with Pagan spirituality, about 20% inspired by experience growing up Jewish, and about 10% completely made up.

My mortal enemy is high word counts. This book's first draft was 197,000 words. I've cut it down to about 129,000 (I know!!!!) after four brutal edits, but would really like to find more places to cut.

I am happy to receive criticism--I've been spanked with critiques by multiple Big Five publishers and been dragged through the mud by much bigger fish than I'm likely to find here, so I can take it. That said, I don't wanna deal with people who are mean just for the sake of being mean. Be cool, okay?

Getting clinically insane about Steven universe again, don’t mind me. Rewatched the last three eps of future again along with some others and oughhhh. I remember it being a popular headcanon at the the time future came out that Steven would have “corruption scars” after it happening and I still really love the idea along with his whole glowing pink deal. Rewatching the og series atm and squeeing every time Steven is on screen, he’s so cute also this is very sketchy so
