Tomato Source
The tomato is perhaps rivalled only by the fire engine for its iconic redness. Carotenoids are the chemical dyes responsible, but different dyes called betalains colour many other plants, fruit and vegetables. The luscious red tomato appears on the left here, unripe at the top and ripe beneath. Scientists genetically engineered another tomato to produce a type of betalain called betacyanin, giving it a deep purple colour (2nd from left). Similar treatment with a yellowish dye (betaxanthin) produced the tommy on the middle right. But this is not just about livening up salads – each of these chemicals has potential health benefits, from antioxidant to anti-inflammatory properties – and the tomato on the right contains all of them. In the future, tomatoes and other plants might act as sources for healthy betalains, which may also make the plants themselves more resistant to diseases.

Listen, I *appreciate* tomatoes, I just don't like them.

My third cryptid interpretation for VACVVM V1! This is a chupacabra, which according to folk accounts is a spiny-backed creature that kills farm animals by draining their blood. Chupacabras are said to resemble a mexican hairless dog or a raccoon/coyote with mange.

The Physics of Kung Fu Brought to Life Through Motion Capture Visualizations + Video
We’ve all seen exaggerated depictions of kung fu in movies or maybe a demonstration by a practitioner in real life, but German digital artist Tobias Gremmler decided to portray the Chinese martial art in an entirely new light through the use of motion capture. By capturing the motion of different sequences Gremmler is able to distill the data into these animated sculptures, effectively turning movement into structure and volume. The motion of limbs is turned into a complex moving scaffold or interpreted as dramatic bursts of particles, the visuals used to seemingly isolate the physics of kung fu. If you enjoyed this also check out films like Asphyxia, Walking City, and these similar idents for CCTV. (via The Creator’s Project, Prosthetic Knowledge)

For Toronto based artist Brian Donnelly, featured here, painting is a risky business. At first beautifully rendered in oil, he then sprays his subjects with turpentine and hand sanitizer until their faces are distorted beyond recognition, to a more limited expression. Donnelly’s work is all about embracing limitations: “I ask a lot of questions about art and how we define it,” he says. “How far away from the original state can we go before we stop calling something art? In the process, I end up drawing a parallel between the fragile nature of artwork and the human condition.”
