NIDS Swap — Maria Robotnik never contracts her illness and never leaves earth, allowing her to be in the right place at the right time to find Shadow's escape pod after the Ark incident. Nearly 50 years later, A teenaged Amy Rose comes across an orphaned Sonic the Hedgehog, and raises him like a little brother, until one day, she contracts NIDS herself. Now, with Sonic desperate to find a cure for her condition, they find themselves working with a jaded young fox to find a way to the one place where they may be able to stave off its effects.

Crushin' 30's AU — An AU in which most characters are as old as their games of origin are relative to the current year (as of 2025). After 35 years of running around, Sonic's fast and free life style is at a crossroads. Age is catching on him and his lifelong friends, and his uncompromising nature is starting to wear thin as everyone around him moves on with their lives. Not helping things is the fact that his childhood nemesis, Ivo, continues to lord Egg Corp's runaway success over the hedgehog's head. With all the energy in the world yet nowhere left to run, Sonic will have to consider whether or not it's okay to slow down and reconnect with the friends and family that have come and gone.

This is a piece that was intended for @sonicfemslashweek 2026 day 4: Summer/Winter. It's meant to be a companion piece for an unfinished fic based on the same prompt. I initially got the idea while on the beach myself, while visiting family down in Florida.

I have 1. It’s an AU in which Amy’s plan succeeds, and she loses everything. Eventually, she gets picked up by the only people who could possibly survive such an apocalypse: The Zone Cops.

A Rose, Whithered

Imagine, if you will, that Scourge the Hedgehog successfully landed himself in Zone Cop prison. He was being given the grand tour by Zonic, as the latter escorted the former to his cell. The cell blocks are arranged alphabetically, so it’s gonna walk. One of the first cells they pass is a large, empty room walled off by a window instead of bars. The only furniture visible is a single chair, upon which the cell’s sole occupant was seated, her featured cloaked in shadow. Her head hung low, long, stringy pink spines hanging limply past her face. Scourge half-jokingly asks what the “broad” inside did to land herself in solitary.“Attempted to merge her zone with another, leading to the demise of both,” Zonic calmly replied.

“Ah. No wonder you bozos keep her locked away the rest of the inmates.” The green hedgehog remarked, a plan of escape already beginning to form in his head.

“On the contrary. She requested to be placed in solitary confinement upon her arrival.”

As quickly as that plan had started to form, it collapsed under its own weight. “Pitiful. Was hoping she’d be one of the classier personalities in this dump. Ah well.”

“Your sarcasm is noted, and ignored.”

“Blow it out your armored tailpipe.”

As the two walked out of earshot, the prisoner’s flattened ears twitched, finally registering that the other hedgehogs had passed her by. After casting a slow, disinterested glance in the direction they’d went, she returned her attention to the object she held nestled in the hem of her old dress: A studded hairband, the only thing to survive the culmination of her cruel, unforgivable sin. She clutched it tightly, as though trying to will its former owner back into existence. The one person who’d had the will to stop her.

She felt the pressure to cry build behind her tired, puffy eyes. But her tears had dried up long ago, while she had watched her new world tear itself to pieces in its dying hours, so soon after its birth. Now, all she could muster was a soft, tinny sob, as she mourned everything, and everyone, that she once held dear.

"That's a good question. Aside from Eggman technically being the ruler of an entire nation, I feel like things would go pretty well. I'd still have a version of my friends to hang out with and go take on Eggman, and a save place to live."

"Would there even be another of me and Kit there? If there is, there better not also be a Starline," Surge grimaced, her disgust plain. "And for that matter, what are the chances there's another one of dark and broody over there?"

"Unless things really are that radically different in this other world, I would assume I'm still in stasis somewhere. That is to say, I wouldn't be 'fairing' at all."

A few hours after the glitter incident, the four found themselves back in Amy's living room. While Surge was brushing the excess glitter out of her quills and clothes from her rush to scrub her and Kit's apartment clean, Shadow stared out the window, watching for any more intruders. As usual, Amy answered first.

"I'd like to think so. I've had my fair share of moments throughout the years where I've been... less than pleasant to my friends, but at the end of the day I always try my best to do right by them. Even if..." Her eyes flicked past Shadow, towards the now-glimmering tower in the distance. "...I sometimes take it too far. As for my favorite color, I think it should be obvious, but pink."

Silence fell upon the room as she finished. It lasted long enough that even Shadow took notice, letting his ever watchful gaze waver as he turned his head.

"Maria always thought I was a good person at heart, and I strive everyday to prove her confidence in me correct," He started, turning back towards the window. "Whether anyone else thinks otherwise, doesn't matter. So long I trust that I am making the right decisions."

"And your favorite color?"

"...Black."

"Eh, being a total goody goody's overrated," Surge chimed in, picking glitter out of her ear. "Some people deserve to get punched, and I ain't to fussed about being the one to punch 'em."

"I wish I could say I didn't expect that kind of answer from you, Surge, but I would have hoped you'd at least consider being a bit more honest about yourself."

"What? That answer not good enough for ya? Not like I'm lying about anything. Me trying to be a hero doesn't mean I'm a good person. Like that one time I started a forest fire."

"Wait, was that you?"

"Ah crap, I said too much."

The grey hedgehog sweeps away the last of the glitter. It disappears off into the purple void below. Still lies The Rose, but at least she's clean and breathing. He wishes he had a blanket to cover her up. The tablet's screen lights up, catching his attention. He quietly picks it back up and reads the message on screen.

"Would a good person have found themselves lost in this purgatory?"

"—Wait a minute." She turns towards the source of the voice. Slowly, angrily, she gets up from her knees, glowering at the intruder. "Alright. You have five seconds to tell me who you are, how'd you get in, and why I shouldn't pound you into the pavement for breaking in here."

Amy, now fully clean of any glitter and dressed in her workout gear while her clothes are in the wash, converses with her friend Tails over the phone. He'd been on a roadtrip by himself for the past couple months, and had missed out on all the action back home. He had just finished telling her about a weird message he'd gotten just before she called him, and the subsequent near miss by a precariously perched bowling ball hiding in the cupboard of his RV.

"Oh wow, you could have been seriously hurt! But, since when did you own a bowling ball?" She asked.

"I didn't think I did. And if I had I wouldn't have stored it so high up in the cabinet. I wonder how it got there?"

"Yeah, I wonder..." Amy glanced over in the direction of Kit, who was busying himself by looking over the cannon that had previous pelted the pink hedgehog with a paint can's worth of pink glitter. When he realized he was being watched, he met Amy's gaze with questioning glare of his own.

"It's a mystery, all right."

Hm... "What's an interesting fact about my AU's characters?"

Well, uh... Kitsunami made Chemical Plant Zone explode?

Yeah I don't know what say here. For the most part every character is canon compliant, save for Swap!Shadow and "The Rose," whom of course lived very different lives from their mainline counterparts.

Swap!Shadow, for instance, is an avid fan of extreme sports, hence he wears roller skates everywhere, much to his own chagrin whenever he has to go off the beaten track. Any grassy, overgrown hills just do not do him any favors. His friendship and rivalry with Sonic first started when he first met him at Little Planet, and he challenged Sonic to see who could beat Eggman first and save the day. He also has naturally gray fur and is mildly jealous of how The Rose rocks those red highlights.

The Rose had a bit of a tougher time on The Ark, not quite being as fast a learner as canon Shadow. In the process, however, she learned a few tricks that even he doesn't know how to do. Maria was the first person aboard The Ark to really comfort her and offer her what she needed to feel loved and cared for. Her outfit is actually a hand-me-down from Maria's early childhood. She hates the name Shadow, and refuses to refer to herself by such a name, even despite Maria's attempts to spin it in a positive light. She just can't see herself being called by that name. It's also possible that her connection to the Black Arms hive mind might be stronger than Shadow's, which will be a problem when she ever encounters them.

The main Amy of this AU obtains a bizarre mastery over the Phantom Ruby that neither Eggman nor Infinite would have expected if they were ever made aware of her possession of it. Her time as "The Rose" has left her psyche polluted with The Rose's memories, including those of The Rose/Shadow's promise to Maria. This, combined with her compassionate nature and an anxiety born from struggling to find purpose in life without a Sonic to chase or a Restoration to manage, is what leads her to conclude that she can use the Ruby to keep that promise.

Shadow, meanwhile, caught onto the fact that something wasn't right in this other life he was living sooner. This left him in a better position to support Amy in the fallout of their experience living in each other's shoes. A shame he didn't stick around just a little bit longer. He might have been able to prevent her from falling further into her delusion.

Surge's struggle is in understanding what it means to be a hero, and figuring out who she can trust after the one person she thought would never betray her wishes does. Her winding up back in Emeraldville and meeting Amy again was a complete accident, but it also put her in the perfect position for when things begin to unravel.

"Roses Wilting" is the result of binging the entirety of Sonic's IDW comic adventures over the course of last summer, falling in love Surge as a character, seeing the way her and Amy interacted in their first and second meeting, and realizing that they were my first ever ship. With nothing else to do in my elevated state of anxiety, I wrote the first chapter as more of a standalone piece. It quickly evolved from there as I started thinking about other stories and AUs, writing bits and pieces while fleshing out the direction of the story and putting together most of the chapters I currently have published on Ao3.

Somewhere along the way, I came up with the idea of a role swap AU between Shadow and Amy, inspired partly by some of the art exploring this idea here on tumblr. It was after I requested this piece of art from @mstormcloud's @amyrosedaily blog that I really started fleshing out the concept and tying it into Roses Wilting as the inciting incident.

From there I've been plugging away at it on-and-off for the past year. A lot of um-ing and ah-ing over the quality the work I have, and delay after delay due to second guessing my every decision up to this point. I still have a lot of work to do if I every want to get this story finished, but hopefully I'll be able to look back on it and say that I final committed to something, and that it turned out better than I expected.

An hour after the glitter-bomb incident, the doorbell rang.

"Can you get that, Kit?" Called the voice of one Amy Rose over the roar of the shower head. Kitsunami is quick to do as instructed. He makes ready to open the door, his watery tails at the ready to bind whoever might be on the other side. When he does open it, all he finds is a quartet of small party bags, each of which is in the color of its intended recipient. While he brings them in, Amy exits the bathroom, wrapped in one towel and using another to pick glitter out of her ears.

"Who was at the door?"

"Uhh, nobody. Just a bunch of bags filled with sweets, treats, and... coffee beans?"

"How very peculiar," Came the voice of Shadow from the couch.

"Oh, Shadow, what are you still doing here? Weren't you going to try and find the guy who got us with all the glitter?"

"Already done. I received word from Rouge and Omega that they have apprehended the culprit in the process of hitting my motorcycle. They have restrained the suspect, and are currently loading Omega up with paintball ammunition."

"Isn't that a bit harsh?"

"You were the one who wanted me to 'throttle them' when I found them. Besides, they targeted my bike. They should know the consequences of touching my property."

"Well, at least Rouge and Omega are having fun. Hey Kit, are there are chocolate bars in there? I've been meaning buy some for this recipe I want to try."

The phone rings on the Miles Electric. There is no caller ID, but it is pretty obvious who it was on the other line. Shadow calmly hit the "answer" prompt on screen.

"DRIPPY! THEY GLITTER-BOMBED ALL MY STUFF!"

The remaining three all looked at each other.

"I should probably go check the rest of my house."

"No need. You can see exactly what they hit outside."

Shadow and Amy joined Kitsunami by the window. The ruins of the helical tower still loomed ominously over the rooftops of Emeraldville, yet despite its terrible appearance, the structure's helices seem to twinkle in the afternoon sunlight.

"...Seriously?" Amy asked, sardonically. As she continued, she marched over to the front door. "How on earth did they even manage that? Oh, when I figure out whoever they are, they are in for such a—"

The moment she opened the door, she found herself blasted by a classroom's worth of pink glitter. When she could finally open her eyes, she would find the culprit: a cardboard confetti cannon, empty save for the few sparkling remnants of its payload.

"I need a bath. Shadow, while I'm doing that, can you find whoever was behind this and throttle them for me?"

"I can try."

"Thank you."

The room is silent. Not a single occupant seems willing to talk. Eventually, Amy speaks up.

"If nobody else wants to answer, then I suppose I will. I regret believing in the vision the ruby showed me. I regret dreading it so much that I went behind my friends' backs with a plan so insane I don't even know why I thought it could work. I regret allowing myself to fall so far into despair and paranoia that I was willing to sacrifice my own happiness on the off chance I'd might be able to ensure everyone else's. I regret not talking to anyone about—"

She is interrupted by a hand on her shoulder. She turns her head to see Shadow sharing with her a knowing look. Glancing around the room, she noticed Surge and Kit staring back. There was an understated sense of empathy behind those wide, sorrowful eyes, even as the former was quicker to avert her gaze. The tenrec's own regrets plain in the way she set her jaw. It was only then that Amy began to notice the wetness clinging to her cheeks.

"I can't speak for everyone present, but I will say that you are not alone in regretting ones actions. Least of all here," The ebony hedgehog stated, as plainly and honestly as he could manage.

"I'm not gonna say I regret anything I've ever done, but I suppose I can say there are some things I've done that I probably shouldn't have," The tenrec affirmed. It sounded like her thoughts were on one thing in particular, though, Amy noted as the small remnants of the burn scar on her back twitched.

"I regret betraying Surge's trust, even though I thought I was doing the right thing in setting her up to be the hero," Kit chimed in.

A small titter escaped Amy's lips as she took in their words. Tears of sorrow turned to tears of joy. Of course she wasn't alone. The three others present were all people who'd made their own big mistakes in their lives, at one time or another. They were all people she'd approached or been approached by at their lowest points, whether they realized it or not. It warmed her heart to know they cared as much about her feelings as she did theirs. Sniffling, she wiped away her tears.

"Thanks, you guys. It means so much to me that you're willing to share yourselves like this."

"I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't admit to nothing!" Surge cut in, much to the amusement of her fennec sidekick. "Oh come on, you're supposed to back me up here!"

The grey hedgehog looked away from the screen to scan the emptiness around him, his eyes finally coming to rest on the still form of his only companion in this space.

"I guess you could say there's a lot I regret. I just wish I knew what specifically caused us both to end up in this mess..."
