Ten People You'd Like to Get to Know Better Game

• last song: "One Year Later" from Battlestar Galactica Season 2 by Bear McCreary - I love a good 16/8 time signature!
• currently watching: Ginger just started me on Silo - and I am hooked.
• current obsession: I am only allowed one?!? Telling everyone I know that I love them, even if I haven't seen them in years. The best part is that not one person has found it to be weird.
• currently reading: There is no way I would ever keep this at one. I have Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros on audio, Black House by Stephen King on eBook, A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn in paperback (been reading this one since January 1 - I can only handle it in small chunks because I get angry knowing that we haven't learned any lessons in 250 years), and The King Arthur Baking Company's All-Purpose Baker's Companion for my baking obsession - see how I worked in a second one.
• currently working on: Transitioning my life from teacher to teacher-without-a-daily-classroom (a year-long life makeover)
• last google search: "Saturday in the Park" lead sheet - I need to be prepared for the 4th of July as it will be on a Saturday this year.
I am not a tagger of people. If you see this and you want to, consider yourself tagged.
Maren, thank you for bringing me, ever so briefly, out of the shadows.
I started the year reading the first chapter of Les Misérables. I ended the year reading the 365th and final chapter of Les Misérables. In between, I read 111 other books (32 traditional books, 29 graphic novels, 23 audiobooks, 21 ebooks, and 7 staged readings). Authors included James S.A. Corey (17 books), Stephen King (16 books), Martha Wells (9 books), William Shakespeare (7 plays), C.S. Lewis & John Scalzi (5 books each), and Elisabeth Wheatley & Veronica Roth (4 books each).
Next year's big read will be The Dark Tower Series (8 books), plus an additional 19 books & short stories connected to that universe.

Every last one of them!
Archeosky was having fun with this
I’m coming up on six years since my leukemia diagnosis date (Wednesday). I have put forth great effort to remain positive. I have learned to give myself grace when I must rest.
However, I do not like having to fight colds. Most of my life, a cold was nothing more than a tickle in my throat that lasted a couple of days. Most people never knew I was sick. Now it is a month of misery.
If there is any part of my past life I could get back, this would be it.
Leukemia fatigue is physically draining. Teaching fatigue is mentally draining. Being outdoors helps me combat both types of fatigue. Two months ago I started geocaching. The physical activity of going to and searching for caches has done wonders. The mental activity of processing clues needed to find some caches has done wonders. I wish I had found this activity six years ago.
As someone who has been, at various times, an artist, musician, actor, director, set designer, lighting designer, and sound designer, I stand with those who devoted their time and talent to the Kennedy Center and felt compelled to leave. I stand with those who have canceled performances.
The performing arts tell our story and are an essential part of the human experience. Stories told through drama, music, and dance can create a laser-focus criticality of our faults and can lift up our hearts to show the best in all of us.
In all of human history, suppressing the arts has never led to better lives.
“Watch what you say,
They'll be calling you a radical
A liberal, oh, fanatical, criminal
Oh, won't you sign up your name?
We'd like to feel you're acceptable
Respectable, oh, presentable, a vegetable.”
Supertramp predicted our present 46 years ago.
“Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
Leukemia Update
Six-month CLL update (5.7 years since diagnosis, 5.1 years since start of treatment, 4.7 years since end of treatment):
•Second consecutive appointment with normal platelet count
•White blood cell count dropped to low again, but I would rather have it there than growing too fast
•No palpable lymph nodes
•First verbal statement from oncology doc that chemotherapy “may have successfully knocked back” my naughty lymphocytes.
Standard disclaimer: CLL does not come with a remission phase except in very rare situations. The date I continue to reach for is April 1, 2030. For people with my genetic markers and my course of treatment, there have been no known relapses beyond 10.4 years.
