⧼   maude apatow, demi woman, she & they   /   dancing queen by abba + she was a story, not an epilogue. her story begins at her birth, the youngest of three siblings, immune to the pressures placed on her older siblings. she was free to follow her dreams, to create her own name for herself. and she is doing just that. she’s earned her recognition, not as a member of the dyer family, but as an actress. her story remains incomplete as she launches her career, hoping to one day be a household name. i’ll get over it, i’ve just gotta be dramatic first. and maybe she will, she’s never been very good when it comes to sharing her feelings. she blames her parents for that, they were too busy with her older siblings to pay attention to their youngest. she learned at an early age to not let it bother her, but that didn’t mean she was willing to just accept it. she made a fuss out of everything, in hopes that maybe, they would pay attention to her. you did not wake up today to be mediocre. she starts each day with her self-proclaimed mantra, a reminder to be her best version of herself. a reminder, that she’s not the same as everyone around her. a reminder to be exceptional.   ⧽   ━━   hey, isn’t that DIANA DYER? i read a daily prophet article on them, once ; the TWENTY THREE year old half blood WITCH is a SALEM WITCHES INSTITUTE alumnus who has gone on to be a WIZARDING ACADEMY OF THE DRAMATIC ARTS STUDENT. i’ve heard they can be quite DRAMATIC & EBULLIENT, but i don’t know… they came off very ECCENTRIC & FRAUDULENT in that interview. it really is hard to know what to believe these days though, isn’t it?

♊ what kind of mail do they get (except for bills)? have they subscribed to any magazines/newspapers?

i feel like diana definitely receives a lot of junk mail from various things she's signed up for. most of it is immediately disposed of. she also subscribes to witch weekly ! apart from that i imagine she receives multiple clothing catalogs.

♌ how do they drink their coffee/tea?

diana drinks either an oatmilk latte or matcha latte. she will occasionally drink unsweet iced tea.

🍀 what kind of jewellery are they wearing? what’s their favourite peace?

diana isn't someone who has a specific piece of jewelry that she wears all the time. instead she matches her jewelry to her outfit. on any given day she's usually wearing some sort of necklace and earrings, but it's not uncommon to see her with a bracelet or several and rings.

♎ is their closet tidy or are the clothes just being thrown inside or lying on the floor?

diana's closet definitely veers towards the messy side but that's only because of how many items she's trying to cram into a small space. she has a lot of clothes and at a certain point it's just too hard to really organize !

♋ do they read any newspapers/magazines? what kind? what topics are they interested in? do they flip forward to the cartoon page first?

diana is an avid reader of witch weekly ! i doubt she knows about the quibbler, and she doesn't care about newspapers. in america she likely read the equivalent to witch weekly.

ꕥ what’s usually in their trouser/jacket pockets or purse?

diana always carries a purse so you won't catch her carrying anything in her pockets. inside her wallet and wand can be found along with a pair of sunglasses, a small make up bag, feminine products, chapstick, bobby pins, a first-aid kit, a spare change of clothes (she uses the expandable charm on her bags), several pairs of shoes, jewelry.

＂      i,    uh.    i  don’t  think  i  know  that  one.      ＂      justin  isn’t  sure  anyone  knows  that  one  in  fact,    but  he  opts  not  to  be  the  guy  to  burst  diana’s  bubble  when  she  seems  so  excited.    besides,    he  might  be  wrong.    he  doesn’t  exactly  consider  himself  an  all  time  expert  in  the  weird  sisters  discography.    knowledge  lies  more  in  elton  john’s  greatest  hits,    or  some  other  muggle  act.    still,    enthusiasm  is  shared,    hands  clutching  at  his  own  choice  of  drink  while  they  wait  for  concert  to  start.      ＂      i  wanna  hear  do  the  hippogriff.    i  love  a  good  throwback.    sends  me  straight  back  to  the  yule  ball  whenever  i  hear  it.      ＂      legs  cross,    spare  hand  pushing  well  -  packed  picnic  basket  towards  her.      ＂      hungry?    pretty  sure  i  brought  enough  to  feed  an  entire  army  of  dementors.    if  dementors  eat.    do  dementors  eat?    y’know,    besides  the  whole      .  .  .      soul  -  sucking  thing.      ＂      now  he’s  just  getting  off  topic,    as  usual.

“oh rats, i really thought that was one of their songs,” diana responded, her face scrunched as she tried and failed to think of the song’s actual title. clearly she wasn’t a big fan of the weird sisters. “i’m not sure i’ve heard that song,” she laughed, “how does it go?” maybe that way she’d be at least a little familiar with one of their songs before the start of the concert. “i am not the person to ask,” she laughed, “i would love something,” she smiled as she peered into the basket.

“oh man, i really hope they play that one song,” diana spoke fast, almost too fast, to the point of where it was difficult to make out what she was saying. it could almost be mistaken for excitement, but a whiff of her breath was enough to say otherwise. “you know the one i’m talking about-” she paused, “the hairy troll one!” okay maybe she wasn’t that big of a fan of the weird sisters ...

𝙻𝙾𝙲𝙰𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽  :  owl post office, diagon alley  !

“that’ll be, uh…-” she only glances down at the reader, reading it off automatically, “two hundred galleons?” owl post, she ( already ) feared, was another ill fit. it had only been about a week since astoria had started and she knew that she could be forgiven most training wheel mistakes, but what she COULDN’T do was shake the distinct feeling of time running out that had kicked in around ‘whoopsie daisy’ number four. as always, it wasn’t actually her fault ; this time she blamed the till for her clumsy fingers ( just like how last time she’d blamed the naturally low volume of the phone she was supposed to answer and the time before that sheer number of keys she was forced to keep track of- ). she was trying her best, but at some point there would be no denying that eventually, a genuine lack of interest in making a career from this job was going to lead her down the same road as always. case in point ; two hundred galleons for a rather small parcel was absurd, realised mere seconds after the words left her mouth as she took a second look down at the old style numbers beneath the weighing scales and saw the dot between them, “oh, shit, i’m sorry! i meant two- i really misread that. you really don’t need to bankrupt yourself to send this to-… where were you sending it, again?” 

diana was in the process of removing the coins from her wallet, when astoria rattled off her total. thankfully the other caught her mistake before diana was forced to interject - not that she’d ever had a problem with being assertive. “i was going to say that seemed a bit expensive,” she responded with a laugh as she finished removing her coins. “it’s going to, uh,” she furrowed her brow as she tried to remember the exact address. she didn’t think to take a look at the package. “whatever that bookstore is on diagon alley,” she concluded. she couldn’t for the life of herself remember it’s name, which was why she’d opted to return the unneeded book through the post.

"well duh, i go through people's phones even if i don't think they're cheating on me. and before you come at me with the whole invasion of privacy thing, i don't care. it's fun."

“you could start with a hello,” diana suggested with a shrug, the faintest of smiles appearing on her face as she cocked her head to the side. “or if you’re feeling adventurous you could try a how are you diana or a nice to see you,” she continued, her smile steadily growing.

“excuse me,” diana called out as she scurried after the older women, her high heels clicking against the pavement. “ma’am!” she tried once again, in hopes that celestia would turn around. “i think you dropped this!” she was relieved to have finally caught up to celestia - her hand holding out the envelope that had fallen from celestia’s purse.

🔧 WRENCH - are they good at fixing relationships? or do they tend to avoid doing so?

if she tried, i believe diana could be good at fixing relationships. or, at least, she'd know all the right things to say in the situation. that being said, she is so incredibly stubborn that she refuses to even humor the idea of mending fences. the prime example being her relationship with her parents and older brother - they were just in town for daisy's funeral and while she easily could've taken the steps to mend their relationship, she pretty much ignored them the entire time.

their   titter   surpasses   silver,      goes   straight   to   golden      &      nectarous   when   diana’s   outstretched   hand   is   taken      /      𝖺   𝗌𝗍𝗎𝖽𝗒   𝗂𝗇   𝗇𝗈𝗂𝗌𝖾,   this   is:      the   slide   of   satin,   the   shuffle   of   stilettos   on   marble.         “         you   may.         ”         upper   hand   won’t   be   relinquished   quite   as   easily   as   their   partner   thinks         ──         muscle   memory   springs   to   action   in   all   of   𝚝𝚠𝚘   𝚜𝚎𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚍𝚜,      &      astoria   wastes   little   time   in   leading   a   lazy   waltz,   perfectly   timed.         “         is   this   where   i   tell   you   that   i’ve   attended   more   malfoy   balls   than   i   can   remember,      &      wanted   to   be   a   ballerina   until   i   broke   my   ankle      ?         ”

“it’s cute,” diana responded with a smile, “that you think you can give me a run for my money.” she hadn’t been able to resist the opportunity to brag - but now it’d transitioned into something else entirely. almost as if she were issuing an informal challenge. “what do you say? let’s go give them a show.”

grief   is   not   an   angry   ghost,      tormenting   every   corner   of   a   𝚘𝚗𝚌𝚎   -   𝚙𝚎𝚊𝚌𝚎𝚏𝚞𝚕   home      ;      rather,   it   is   a   relentless   tidal   wave,   a   fierce   rip   that’s   sucked   them   out   into   the   ocean.      left   to   flounder,   to   paddle,   powerless   against   it   all   but   𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆   nonetheless         ──         there’s   toothpaste   crusted   at   the   corner   of   their   mouth   from   at   least   three   days   before,   a   full   glass   of   water   on   bedside   table   has   been   poured   but   gone   unconsumed.   it   has   not   made   them   KINDER,   nor   stronger.      it   has   only   made   them   grieve.      matilda   is   distantly   aware   that   diana   is   talking,   only   tuning   in   to   the   tail   end   when   a   question   is   presented.   it’s   the   same   question   that   everybody   has   asked,   𝗍𝗁𝖺𝗍   𝗍𝗁𝖾𝗒   𝖺𝗅𝗅   𝗄𝗇𝗈𝗐   𝗍𝗁𝖾   𝗁𝖺𝗋𝗋𝗈𝗐𝗂𝗇𝗀   𝖺𝗇𝗌𝗐𝖾𝗋   𝗍𝗈.      (      it   never   stops   them   from   asking,   though.      )         “         i’m   alive.         ”         mostly   mumbled   against   their   pillow,   their   gaze   doesn’t   stray   from   an   unremarkable   spot   on   the   wall.   it’s   the   best   they   can   offer:      their   heart   still   pounds,   riven   but   𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐘.   they’re   breathing,   slow      &      rhythmic,   if   stilted   when   a   fresh   bout   of   tears   are   swiped   against   the   sleeve   of   a   dirty   sweater,   still   damp   from   their   last   crying   jag.   is   there   ever   a   way   to   hold   up   after   this      ?

it was an incredibly stupid question to ask, especially when she considered that she probably knew how matilda felt better than anyone else. but it was too late to take it back. instead she just nodded, as she laid down next to her friend. “move over?” she asked softly as she reached for the blanket. had she not been going through it herself, diana would’ve been at matilda’s side almost immediately. but before now she’d barely left her bed. but then she’d woken up with an overwhelming need for company - matilda’s company.

c’mon,   patil.   you   can   do   this.      &      it   doesn’t   go   unnoticed,   the   way   heads   have   already   𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐃      /      360   degrees   on   some   of   them,   fuckin’   regan   macneil   made   manifest   on   this   overpolished   marble   floor.   the   robes   of   an   auror   make   stark   contrast   to   that   of   regular   partygoers,      &      they’re   all   too   aware   of   the   eyes   that   𝚋𝚞𝚛𝚗   𝚑𝚘𝚕𝚎𝚜   into   the   slender   lines   of   their   back      !         (         what   would   padma   have   done      ?      it’s   a   regular   refrain   returned   to   whenever   panic   crawls,   thick      &      sticky,      up   the   column   of   their   throat.   oh,   to   trade   places   with   a   ghost      …      padma   would   do   this   better,   they   know   it   in   their   gut.   god   doesn’t   DO   deals   like   that,   though,   parvati   knows   it   better   than   most.   haven’t   they   spent   years   asking   for   that   impossible   exchange,   anyway      ?      )         their   steps   are   quick,   regrettably   so      ;      easier   to   get   this   over      &      done   with.   once   they’ve   found   a   quiet   enough   corner,   parvati   casts   a   quick   muffliato,   a   preservation   of   dignity   if   nothing   else.      theirs,   or   diana’s      ?         “         i’m   sure   you’re   aware   by   now   that   there   was   an   attack   on   diagon   alley   earlier   this   evening.   that   there   were   casualties.         ”         it’s   a   wonder   parvati’s   voice   doesn’t   tremble,   with   the   terrible   weight   of   what   they   have   to   divulge.         “         i’m   incredibly   sorry,   ms.   dyer,   i   really   am.   we   believe      …         ”         &      it   shouldn’t   be   this   hard,   to   choke   it   out.         “         we   believe   that   your   sister   is   among   the   three   fatalities.   we   may   require   you   to   come      &      identify   the   BODY,   but   at   this   stage      …      the   department   of   magical   law   enforcement   extends   our   deepest   sympathies      &      condolences,   on   the   loss   of   your   loved   one.         ”         it’s   ripped   right   from   the   guidebook,   a   little   robotic,   not   devoid   of   feeling   but   instead   aching   of   something   repressed      /      like   if   they   let   loose,   they’ll   sob   along   with   diana,      &      the   𝚠𝚑𝚘𝚕𝚎   𝚍𝚊𝚖𝚗𝚎𝚍   𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐   will   go   down   not   in   flames,   but   in   a   flood   of   tears.      merlin   alive,   nobody   tells   aurors   exactly   how   horrific   this   part   is.

although parvati’s behavior and wardrobe struck her as odd - neither were enough to cause diana any real concern. for now she remained happily inside of her own little bubble, the words of the announcement already on the verge of leaving her mind altogether. she just hoped whatever parvati needed wouldn’t take too long - she had a lot of dancing to get in before the ball ended. “yes, i heard the announcement,” she responded, rather flippantly, her eyebrows narrowed as she stared at parvati - almost as if silently asking what it had to do with her. she didn’t get a chance to ask. “that’s not-” she stammered, “that’s not funny,” she continued, her voice noticeably shaky - she’d just seen daisy’s girlfriend - though, now that she thought about it she couldn’t remember if she’d seen daisy. surely she had. why would daisy have been at the apothecary? it didn’t make sense. “you’re wrong,” she added, this time her words were noticeably defensive. “daisy’s here- i can go get here for you,” she turned as she spoke, blinking back tears as she scanned the room. “she’s here.”

they’re not an idiot, really. the almost namedrop does not go unnoticed, and that’s probably evident in the slight narrowing of their eyes & the way that their friendly smile somewhat falters, but they don’t bring it up. there’s a level to all this that they don’t understand and are not entirely convinced is their business, so they decide to stick to what they can speak to. “i don’t think that disappearing into a bathroom with someone that isn’t my girlfriend is a good look,” they have to insist, though they’re not trying to be rude ; they do want help, they just don’t wanna offend daisy, “there’s probably a quiet room or two in a manor like this, right ? i’m sure a dark corner’ll do just as well, uh…- sorry, i didn’t get your name ?”

god - she really wasn’t making a good impression, was she? she wasn’t intentionally coming on to antigone - but she wasn’t quite sure how to clear that up without revealing her entire hand. “right,” she smiled, “i wasn’t sure we were allowed to go into any of the rooms,” she responded - it was the truth, otherwise that would’ve been her first suggestion. “oh it’s diana,” she smiled, “what’s yours?”

they’re   not   cut   out   for   this,      the   tenderness      &      the   heartache   of   speaking   𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘵   𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦   𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘴   into   devastating   realities.   it   tugs   something   too   raw,   still   sore   beneath   the   cage   of   fine   -   spun   ribs.   it’s   part      &      parcel   of   the   job         ──         the   one   they   love,   honour,   respect      …      christ   alive,   it   doesn’t   make   it   EASIER.      𝚒   𝚗𝚎𝚎𝚍   𝚢𝚘𝚞   𝚝𝚘   𝚑𝚎𝚕𝚙   𝚒𝚗   𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚝𝚊𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐   𝚝𝚑𝚎   𝚏𝚊𝚖𝚒𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚜.      squared   shoulders   shake   with   a   sigh   when   parvati   finally   catches   sight   of   diana   dyer,   like   there’s   suddenly   not   nearly   enough   oxygen   to   get   them   through   this.         “         ms.   dyer,         ”         &      cadence   is   slowed,   paced,   deliberately   steady.      inhale,   exhale,   don’t   let   your   voice   crack.   you’re   an   auror   for   merlin’s   sake,   you   can   do   this.         “         i   need   a   moment   of   your   time,   if   you’d   follow   me.         ”         wand   at   the   ready,   muffliato   is   already   brimming   on   bitten   mouth   that   would   rather   spill   anything   but   what   they   must.      part   of   the   job,   kid.   you   signed   up   for   this.

despite the announcements - diana remained in a surprisingly good mood. or at least, she was trying to remain in a good to smile. it was quite difficult to smile after hearing such horrible news, but she managed, of course, the flutes of champagne she’d been downing all night helped. she opted not to turn around when parvati first approached - holding up her hand as she made the executive decision to wrap up her conversation. “that’s me,” diana smiled as she turned to face parvati, “well, if you insist,” she hadn’t - but that wasn’t really the point. “lead the way.”

“you’re not putting the moves on me, are you ?” they just assume the answer is yes - why else would she heavily imply the need to go somewhere more private for them to get their kit off ? - and they’re a LITTLE flattered, but they’re also loyal. no amount of feeling sorry for themself ( of which there is so much, because they actually really liked this suit ) can make them forget about the fact that they have a very beautiful girlfriend rushing to finish up at work and get to their side. “because…- i think we’re pretty monogamous ? we haven’t talked about it, really, but… it seems implied, and you seem lovely, but i’m much to happy to entertain the idea of messing that up-”

"oh god, no,” diana was quick to respond, though she realized that maybe it wasn’t the best response - she wanted to shut down any wrong ideas. “i’d never do that to dai-” she cut herself off abruptly, deciding that maybe she shouldn’t play her entire hand. “it just seems like something you’d do in the bathroom you know? somewhere away from the general public? i’m more than willing to work on it here- i just figured you wouldn’t want everyone to watch.”
