do i know damn well that spanish doesn’t exist in the star wars universe? yes. do i lose my damn mind every time i read a fanfic where cassian refers to jyn with pet names like ‘mi amor’? also yes.
we are so lucky to have lots of talented people creating fic and art for rebelcaptain 5 years after the movie… you’re angels tysm for keeping this fandom alive
Do you ever think about the lines
"Trust goes both ways."
and
"Your father would've been proud of you."
Because I do.
It Haunts me.
Because the first thing I thought, and thought for a long time, about that line was that freudian thought that eeesh that's an awkward Oedipal line to end the entire film on and why would they do that.
But I was thinking of Cassian's line as a part of a text and not a line that says something about his character. And that's where I got it wrong.
Because what does "your father would've been proud of you" say about Cassian Andor in that moment?
Not that he's trying to console Jyn in her last moments. Not that he's trying to reassure himself that their deaths are worth it. But that he has complete and unflinching faith in the fact that they accomplished the goal Galen set for them.
In other words, that he trusts Jyn unconditionally.
And it's consistent all the way through Scarif, because
when they get to the file room and they're going through hundreds of thousands of files, she stops and says "stardust! That's the one" and he goes "How do you know?" and she turns to him and she smiles and says "because it's me!"
And he just smiles softly and genuinely at her, like of course this is true and of course that's Jyn, like it's a second name.
And it doesn't seem like a big thing because we've heard her dad call her stardust so many times. In her past, in his message to her, when she meets him again. And oh what a brilliant bit of writing that Galen used Jyn as a ploy to say stardust-stardust-scarif-stardust as a hint to anyone finding the message, like a code, and just disguising it in Jyn.
But we were with Jyn all those times and Cassian never was. He's never met Galen. He's never heard him speak or talked to him. He's never seen the message because he dragged Jyn out of the temple before she could pick it up.
He just trusts her words as Fact because she said so.
He sacrifices himself for her on that belief, gets shot, probably breaks his back, and still climbs up a karking tower to have her back carried by that faith, in the trust that what Jyn says is true.
And it's so powerful, because when he tells her on the ship to Eadu that he isn't the one she has to convince, and that it's good to know that Chirrut believes in her he's speaking the truth.
He trusts her immediately about the message, and he's angry and disappointed that she doesn't have it on her because he knows his superiors aren't going to take her words for it. They aren't going to believe what she says like he does and Chirrut does, and so he keeps it to himself, because either way Draven has him tied hands and feet to the fate of a killer, even though he doesn't want to kill Galen.
And at Eadu he didn't feel free to act on the trust he's always felt in her.
But then the Alliance turn out to be cowards and betray all the people who've sacrificed themselves and their clean hands for the Rebellion, and Jyn becomes this new shining symbol of a Rebellion to Cassian, like she did to Chirrut and Baze and all the others.
He declares openly he believes in Jyn and he just never looks back.
And so when he asks her, half dead and in So Much Pain, if she thinks anyone got the plans, if anyone is listening, because they can't see the fleet or the gate for the atmosphere, and they don't know if anyone is alive up there to receive it or if Bodhi got the message to listen through, she says "yes" and he just trusts her.
So while Jyn's first true words to Cassian are "Trust goes both ways"
Cassian's last words aren't random or empty condolences for her sacrifice, for their sacrifice. They're not the pat on the head to a daughter who was only the tool of her father.
Cassian's last words to Jyn, in the true nature and code of a spy, are an answer to her: "I know. And I always did."
I know I've probably said this like a million times already but nothing, NOTHING in a movie has ever made me feel the way the elevator scene in rogue one has. Everything about the scene makes me go feral. The eye contact? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP. The chemistry? CALL ME A SCIENCE MAJOR BECAUSE PLEASE. The longing, the unspoken words, the unexplained, heavy glances? yes YES YES
Going through all the ref photos I took a while back, looking for Angry!Jyn expressions and I love the character acting in this film So Much, because, she tilts her head when she’s annoyed and angry:
But Cassian doesn’t naturally do that. It’s not part of the way he behaves (because he’s a spy and has self control),
but copying is a natural part of showing empathy, and something animators and actors use a lot to portray a character in love, and After Eadu, after realising he can’t do anything to hurt her and would literally rather run onto a platform about to explode with no hope of her still being alive than be without her, he starts doing it too
born in war, found each other, rest in peace.
for the rare chara sketch requests - I don't remember if you've ever drawn Jyn and/or Cassian? 😚 stay awesome, can't wait to see what characters you'll end up drawing 🔥
Really liked Rogue One ending when they kissed and everyone was happy
Also it's a crime that I haven't drawn them before, I love them
I want AT LEAST a glimpse of Jyn or mention of her from Saw Gerrera or whatever in the upcoming Cassian tv series
Peace will come, surely. But I can imagine no other peace than that of our two bodies bound together, of our gaze given over to each other. I have no other homeland but you.

do you think when Cassain reprogrammed K-2SO he gave him a new voice or do all Imperial KX-series security droids have a snarky Alan Tudyk voice ??
I really like to think he tinkered with the voice settings, maybe just giving him a slightly different pitch - clearly he wanted Kay to have personality (hence the sarcasm)
Sorry guys, my keyboard slipped:
“Cassian. My voice is acceptable as-is,” K2SO spoke in a low, gravely, warbled voice.
Cassian didn’t look up from his datapad as he kept scrolling through different voice options. “I want to make sure people hear your voice and realize that you’re not actually part of the Empire anymore.” As he continued to filter through possible firmware options to install on K2′s system, he sighed- half out of boredom, half out of frustration. “All of these options are so…bare,” he muttered, shaking his head in disapproval.
“This voice is the bare minimum of accepted standards for communicating with Imperial officers,” K2 said. “There is no need to install new vocal firmware.”
“Wouldn’t you prefer to speak more like a sentient?”
“I am a droid,” K2 responded with the same level, robotic warble. “Speaking like a sentient carries no benefit.”
“Tonal range allows you to express more than words alone,” Cassian explained, setting the datapad down on the work station. The cables leading up to the base of K2′s skull tugged and swayed slightly at the motion. “I reprogrammed you to free you from Imperial programming; wouldn’t you prefer to have the freedom to communicate with a larger range of emotion?”
K2 paused, his halo lights flickering in calculation.
The calculations concluded, and his eyes stabilized again to a solid, blue-white light. “Your insistence that my voice must be changed is not indicative of the freedom you claim I have.”
Cassian stiffened, realizing the weight of the words from the newly re-programmed Imperial droid.
“You’re right,” Cassian smirked, amused at how quickly the tables turned on him. “Alright; would you like to have your firmware changed so that you can have a different voice?”
K2 didn’t need to make as many calculations to respond: “I would like to change my voice.”
The voice K2 decided on wasn’t an incredibly huge change in tone- it was still low and droll, but the waveforms were less jagged, processing through the speakers instead like streamers in a gentle breeze.
Occasionally, however, there would be a minor change in the way his vocal firmware operated, controlled freely by the droid himself, normally made present when he had something particularly snarky to say.
“Cassian, I dare say this suits my personality quite well,” K2 marveled as Cassian removed the cables from his head.
He huffed in amusement as he tidied up his workstation. “You started off so rigid; suddenly you say you have a personality?”
The strange, quirky spike in his waveform popped up for the first time when he responded with, “More of one than you, from what I’ve observed since we first met.”
The moment Ben felt the grip of Luke’s lightsaber in his palm, he knew it belonged to him, an extension of his very own self. He raised it slowly, relishing the feel of it.
The Knights started backward a few steps.
Surprise, he imagined his father saying.
He attacked.
