Color story - Metallics, blacks, blues
It was an honor and an amazing experience to work backstage for NYFW for designer Danielle Sweeney @younggoogle and 3 other amazing designers. • •Straightening all the sequins on the dress before the walk• • #fashiondesign #nyfw #sequindress #backstage #fashion #runway (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn2pKY9h3tI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=bc0i9lfl78vs

Homework #3 Chapter 5: Balance
Chapter 8: Shape and Volume
Chapter 11: Illusion of motion
· Balance – elements equally distributed in a composition/ distributed visual weight
· Imbalance – lack of balance in a composition which disturbs or makes the viewer uncomfortable
· Symmetrical Balance – repetition of shapes in the same position or either side of the vertical axis
· Asymmetrical Balance – dissimilar objects with equal visual weight or equal eye attraction
· Radical Balance – elements which are off center; or going in the outward direction of the center
· Allover pattern – constant repetition of the same quality everywhere on the surface to create a symmetrical balance.
· Shape/Form – visual perceived area created either by an enclosed lone or by color
· Volume/mass – to show three-dimensional equivalent objects
· Naturalism – self evident; exactly like real life
· Distortion – exaggerated shapes
· Abstraction – artistic distortion; simplified natural shapes
· Biomorphic – imaginary shapes which includes natural or organic form
· Nonobjective – object without any purpose or reference
· Curvilinear – emphasis on curved lines
· Positive Space – colored/black element on the composition
· Negative Space – reminder of the composition
· How do multiple images suggest motion? – a decisive moment capture in photographs can suggest motion of images
· How do you create optical movement?
- Implied lines and gesture put together suggests the motion in images
In this blog post, I will be talking about Balanced and Imbalanced fashion pieces. These photos are some examples of both the terms Photo 1, 2 and 3 are examples of Imbalanced fashion as the Shapes are not similar across the axis. In Photo 1, Comme des Gracos RTW spring 2015 design its Asymmetrical which shows the imbalance of the design. Similarly,in Photo 2 a design by Anthony Vaccarello RTW 2015, it is asymmetrical as well as it is longer on one side and shorter on the other side. The left side of the dress is more flowy and lighter than the right side. In photo 3, a recycled fashion design by Masion Marin Margiela’s Artisanal Collection shows the All over pattern by using recycled materials in a similar manner in an ombre with an Asymmetrical Form. Photo 4 and 5 shows the motion in an image, we can feel the motion because the photograph was captured in a decisive moment which shows the motion of the dresses.
From these vocabulary and blog post I learned about how to make a composition Balanced/Imbalance, Symmetrical/Asymmetrical, what are Naturalistic and Stylized composition, Abstraction, distortion and how can we show optical movement and motion through art.
Homework #2
Chapter 3: Emphasis and Focal Point
Chapter 6: Rhythm
Chapter 7: Line
· Focal point for Emphasis – important part of the drawing
· Emphasis by contrast – opposite elements placed together to put emphasis on one element
· Emphasis by isolation - to bring the element away from other elements and not in the center of the drawing
· Visual Rhythm – repetition of an element to show visual unity
· Alternating Rhythm – a consistent pattern to create a sequence
· Inherent Rhythm -
· What is a line – dots connected together to a certain height and width
· Cross contour – adding lines to the contoured objects to make it look more three-dimensional
· Contour – outline of objects
· Implied Line - a dotted line placed in a way that it looks connected to the viewer
· Explicit line – perspective line which shows the process of how the composition was created
· Lost and found line - a sharp line transitioning into a softer line which disappears
· Psychic Line - an imaginary line created when an element is pointing towards another element
· Line as texture and pattern - cross hatching, it shows different textures and values of the object
The photo A. is an oil on canvas by Jen Heller called Still Life with a fly painted in 2013. In this composition the Focal point for Emphasis is the blue ribbon even though the painting is named after the fly. The painter uses the Emphasis of Contrast with the background and other objects, using the light blue and silver colors in front of the dark golden background which brings up the objects. Even the fly is of a light color so it can be seen as a contrast.
Photo B. shows the technique of cross contour composition with a visual rhythm of colorful lines going infinite. This technique helps us to make a two-dimensional object on a paper look three-dimensional.
Photo C. is a painting by Jeffrey Teuton called “song for a lonely heart” in 2015. In this composition there was Visual Rhythm because of the repeating of the colors and Alternating Rhythm because there is a sequence of a similar element. The artist have use some dark colors to lighter colors which goes to the title of the artwork “song of a lonely heart”, therefore it creates a mood for the viewers.
· Visual unity – looking at a picture as a whole than their individual details
· Gestalt – a theory in which the artwork is perceived as a whole rather than some parts
· Harmony – when the elements of the artwork complements each other
· Proximity – placement of the objects in an artwork (negative and positive space), show that separate elements relates to each other
· Continuity - use of similar techniques in different parts of the artwork to connect separate elements; helps viewer’s eyes to be carried in a certain direction
· Repetition – repeating of various parts of the design to related to each other
· Emphasis – the focal point of an artwork
· Chaos and control – too many elements in an artwork
· The grid – vertical and horizontal lines which helps the artist to show the placement of the design
This an oil painting “Lavin Black and White” by K Madison Moore. (2014-07-04)
I find this painting interesting because it relates to my career interest Fashion Design. It teaches me how to present a collection of my ideas in a single painting using various elements.
In this painting there is a scenario of a fashion show or a high fashion event with the repetition of the colors black and white. The visual unity creates a harmonious mood because of the complementing colors. The black and white gowns in front of the bright red and softer background with proper placing of the elements using the grid which avoids chaos. This technique helps the viewer’s eyes to move around the painting.
