Ed Pien: Drawing in Many Forms - Canadian Art

“Viewing Ed Pien’s work, one senses that his fascination with drawing lies in its potential to make visible quickly and with the most basic of materials all that is ephemeral about existence: thought, emotion, imagination and dreams. With his latest exhibition, “Treacherous Lines,” Pien taps into drawing’s ability to capture the hidden workings of the mind across a wide range of media, confirming that drawing is essentially his modus operandi, no matter what the medium.”

I think this would be nice for Maggie to look at if she hasn’t already. Maggie’s figures reminded me of Gould’s colour choices and the heavier contour lines.

Michael Dumontier: Drawing on Minimalism, and Maturity - Canadian Art

This has some interesting photos with Dumontier’s work in books and how images can be displayed on the wall through shelving units. This could be interesting for Lindsay’s installation project.

Anibal Gomescasseres

“In his series “Light Atmospheres,” Anibal Gomescasseres sets photographic images aglow with rectangular lightboxes. His approach to light as both a subject and medium, interest in spatial perception, and employment of a minimalist color palette recall the sensibility of James Turrell. Colors like teal, fuchsia, and indigo illuminate attractive, zen-like environments: a pool, a moonlit mountain range, and a bare room. With the flick of a light, water splashes and clouds materialize. These small visual shifts suggest the passing of time or the intervention of a person into the scene, even though Gomescasseres’s environments are devoid of people.”

“Hyunsoo Lee’s works are inspired by themes of social stigma, identity, psychological disorders, and more recently, of spirituality and religion. He explores these themes through a novel vector – paintings and sculptures consisting largely of cell-like marks that vary in size, color, and saturation. His works are seen as ethereal and delicate, but the extremely labor-intensive compositions, marked by intensely obsessive repetitions, quickly betray that initial perception. Exploring his own history of anxiety disorders through his art, Timothy confronts and manipulates his tics and compulsions and channels them into his works. In responding to his anxiety with art, he has developed a novel system of mind-mapping – “a cartography of his psychopathology” – to study a part of himself that initially drew him to study developmental biology and neuroscience in college.”

General interest, Josh Thorpe sanded the walls of the MOCCA to show the sediments of paint. It looks like a geological map!
