What is Female Infertility?
You did everything right, but you aren’t achieving pregnancy; what should you do now?
Just like—if the soil isn’t fertile enough, it won’t grow a healthy plant. In your body, this is called Female infertility. When your uterus isn’t ready, it will not hold the egg, resulting in pregnancy failure.Â
But there’s no need to worry. Let's understand—Â
How Fertility specialist doctors define it:
1) Delay in egg formation (PMOS/Anovulation): According to Ayurveda, when toxins sustain in your body, nutrients are unable to reach the reproductive organs, causing a delay in egg formation.
Treatment: Ayurveda doctors' first approach is ‘Virechana’ (an Ayurvedic detoxification therapy). This cleanses your liver and digestive system, thereby balancing any blocked hormones and providing a "wake-up call" to the ovaries. Eggs also fail to grow due to inadequate blood and oxygen not reaching the ovaries, in this case a medicated oil is introduced directly into the uterus and the surrounding ovarian region to improve local blood circulation. As soon as the ovaries receive a good supply of oxygen and blood, inactive eggs become active and begin to develop.
2) Poor egg quality/Low AMH: Eggs may be mature but if they do not have the quality you are looking for, they cannot make a healthy pregnancy. In this case, modern science uses hormonal injections or medicines.
Whereas, Ayurveda believes in natural healing rather than treating the ovaries temporarily, it provides them with sufficient internal nutrition and the right environment, and supports them to naturally produce good and healthy eggs on their own.
Treatment: Ayurveda involves specific herbs to enhance both the size and quality of eggs:
Shatavari & Ashwagandha: These herbs encourage the ovaries, enabling eggs to grow to the appropriate size naturally.
Phala Ghrita (Medicated oil): This is a specialized Ayurvedic oil that provides deep, internal nourishment to the ovaries, and strengthens the egg.
3) Blocked Fallopian tubes: The egg must travel through a small tunnel known as the fallopian tube to its destination, which is the uterus. Sometimes, these tubes get blocked due to waste stored in the tubes.
Treatment: If this passage is blocked, the doctor introduces medicinal Ayurvedic oil directly into the uterus using a very thin, soft, sterile tube. It involves no pain or the need for anesthesia, and it is performed immediately after menstruation. This oil works on the blocked tubes, in order to naturally dissolve and clear away any inflammation or waste present there. Hence, the tubes open up without the need for any surgery.
4) Thin Endometrium (When the uterus isn’t ready): If the uterus is not soft and cozy (much like a comfortable bed), the egg will be unable to take place there. Here, Dr. Chanchal sharma prescribes Natural supplements that balance the hormones, thereby transforming the uterus into a perfect bed for the baby.
Treatment: At Aasha Ayurveda, specific herbs are used that act directly upon the muscles and lining of the uterus:
Ashoka and Lodhra: These two herbs tone the uterine walls, strengthening them to make them capable of sustaining a healthy pregnancy.
Yashtimadhu (Mulethi): This herb naturally increases estrogen levels within the body, thereby facilitating the natural growth of the uterus lining.
If your uterine lining is thin, or if there is any imbalance of hormones in your body, the embryo will not implant itself in the uterine lining. Hence, either you will not conceive, or you will undergo a spontaneous abortion.
According to Aasha Ayurveda, the uterus should not be treated with artificial means, but it should be treated with natural means.
Dr. Chanchal Sharma, a skillful gynecologist and female infertility specialist, provides an Ayurvedic treatment for this issue:
1. Uttar Basti (Natural Fertilizer for the Uterus)
This is the best remedy for the problem. In case the endometrium is found to be thin, the doctor introduces medicine oil or ghee (like Phala Ghrita) through a thin tube directly inside the uterus.
How it works: This oil gives nourishment to the walls of the uterus. Similar to the way the addition of water and fertilizer to barren land makes it fertile and soft, the same happens in the case of Uttar Basti, making the uterine walls thick (up to 8 to 11mm thickness) in order to sustain natural pregnancy.
It is a cleansing process for the body when the waste matter and toxins inside the reproductive organs hampers the organ functioning. The process of Panchakarma eliminates these wastes and helps increase female fertility.
It involves these main practices:
1. Virechana (Cleansing of Bodily Toxins)
The treatment is meant to treat the inflammation of the ovaries and reduce any excess of body heat, or Pitta. It involves the doctor giving the patient medicated ghee orally for a few days, followed by giving herbal medications for the cleansing of the bowels.
How it works: Just as we do when resetting a phone infected with a virus or junk files, so that the phone does not freeze, Virechana resets our liver and the digestive system. It gets rid of any toxins that are in the body and makes sure that hormones are balanced and weak eggs are stimulated into maturity.
2. Basti (Internal Servicing of the Reproductive System)
The procedure itself corrects the imbalance of the Energy system responsible for the regulation of the reproductive organs—uterus and ovaries. This method involves the administration of medicinal oils or herbal decoctions through the rectal route.
How it works: As a bike chain freezes and stops turning without being oiled on time, the Basti therapy acts similarly by lubricating the pelvic area, which enables proper ovulation.
3. Vamana (A Vomiting-based Treatment for Clearing Blockages)
This treatment proves to be extremely effective for females suffering from irregular or non-menstrual cycles, as a result of PCOS or obesity. This treatment involves administering drugs that cause vomiting, hence getting rid of excess water retention and toxins (Kapha) from the upper body.
How it works: Just like how a clogged drainage system will not allow water to flow through and necessitate cleaning it up to unblock the drain, so does Vamana unblock the blockages within the body that prevent the passage to the ovaries.
4. Abhyanga and Swedana (Massage and Steam Therapy to Enhance Blood Flow)
The procedure includes gentle massage of the whole abdominal region, lower back, and pelvis using special Ayurvedic oils, after which steam is applied through herbal mixtures that are heated up.
How it works: The effect of the warmth of the sun rays on ice to make it melt and start flowing, similar action takes place here and breaks the stiffness inside the reproductive organs. Consequently, there is improved circulation of blood and oxygen in the womb making it fertile and receptive.
