It has always been an established and understood fact that crying children, no matter their species, have some kind of aura around them that gets inside the brains of all adults in the area. It attracts the adult, lures them close enough to notice their distress, and then distorts the brain until there is little else you can think about aside from this child. Roy found himself in such a predicament on his way home from the police station after work, nearly tripping on a curled up figure weeping on the sidewalk.
He takes three quick steps backward to keep from crowding the poor kid, and frowns down at them. The mumbled dismissal doesn’t manage deter him from his concern.
“Sorry, I can’t just leave you here.” It would be irresponsible, although Roy was admittedly out of his depth. Grasping at the only example he’d ever really known of a good guardian, Roy knelt down and put his best friendly face on.
“Maybe I can help you figure this out so you won’t be so upset, yeah?” It was maybe a tad patronizing in practice, but Maes always made it work somehow.
An extremely careful, comforting tone reached down towards him, and that was so much different than Cucumber was accustomed to that he almost broke down anew. He peeked out from under an arm that lay across his face, and was greeted by the sight of a police officer’s uniform.
Maybe he could trust this man. Maybe. It was worth a shot, at the very least. Slowly, Cucumber started to speak. It was difficult to sum up their circumstances quickly. “I can’t find my sister. She’s younger than me- only nine. And I don’t know where my other friend is, or where I am.”
“And if I’m not there with her, I don’t know what’ll happen to her. She’s got her sword but...” He trailed off. Almond could still be home, in Dreamside. The longer he thought about it, the more likely it seemed. What if the Nightmare Knight found her? She wasn’t as likely to try and talk to him as Cucumber was, and he seemed less likely to listen than he did before. He’d never forgive himself if something happened to her.
