Oooh Mother Russia...
For those of you who don't know, I am half russian thanks to my mother. And so naturally I'm more than a little partial to a bit of Russian food every now and again. I can vouch that my Granny makes the best food ever. I promise.
But sadly, she lives in the motherland, so I don't see her all too often. But now thank the lord, I can go somewhere to satisfy my cravings for some Pilmeni or Borsch. My granny will soon have firm competition from them. All praise Mari Vanna.
Although they opened their London restaurant before the summer, hosting Prince William's 30th birthday party there, they had their launch party just over a week ago and I can vouch for the russianness. Vodka on tap, little meat pies, and raspberry juice.
The food on an ordinary day is similarly as Russian as Russian food can get. They serve Borsch (traditional beetroot soup), Pilmeni (the Russian version of ravioli but usually filled with meat), beef stroganov, as well as Russian deserts such as the Napoleon cake and Honey cake, all accompanied, naturally, by Kvas, the most delicious drink made from fermented rye.
The decor is also very homely. It reminds me of the decor of my Granny's dacha. Not gonna lie, it makes me want to go there! They have Russian dolls, soviet newspapers hung up, lots of frills and pictures, skis and skates, homely china and traditional russian spoons. The sideboards and the large number of small tables dotted about makes it feel like you've walked into someone's front room.
They're located on Knightsbridge, just around the corner from Harrods and serve lunch and dinner. Here is their website should you be interested:

Food for thought...
On the way home from delivering a package on behalf of my mum near Trafalgar Square, I had to walk down a long, narrow and steep street to get to Embankment tube station. Many of you will know it I'm sure, just round the corner from Charing Cross Station, its the street graced by Rudyard Kipling's presence between 1889 and 1891 according to the blue plaque...sound familiar? Probably not. But Villiers Street WC2 is now home to something else. Quite conveniently reminding me of the lack of lunch as I walked down it, Villiers Street is jampacked with cafes and restaurants, quite the array of food from all over the world just waiting to serve hundreds of tourists and busy bankers who hurry on by daily. There are several of the more popular chain cafes to choose from such as EAT, Cafe Rouge, Starbucks and Wasabi, as well as one of two quirky cafes, a personal favourite being Herman ze German. I popped in to have a look and this is certainly a novelty. I LOVED IT. They sell Currywurst, an increasingly popular food in Germany which is basically sausage with curry sauce, as well as pretzels and various other breads and pastries. They also sell various fizzy drinks imported specially from Germany. Its quite cool. Although in the end I decided not to get anything, I definately will be going back at some stage and I'm sure my stomach will approve...
Here is Herman ze German's website, check it out: http://www.herman-ze-german.co.uk/index.htmlÂ
I donât hate anyone. I think it is impossible to experience someone who hasnât got at least one good thing to focus on (in practise this may prove otherwise). But there is one kind of person that I dislike more than any other.Â
The kind who act dumb.Â
I have to say it is mainly girls who have this infection of stupidity which varies depending on who theyâre with, but boys have been known to carry the illness. One girl asked me the other day how to spell âtries.â What!? Firstly, you should have learnt how to spell preceding your application to secondary education and secondly, she sat right in front of an ÂŁ1000 mac that has a full dictionary in 200 different languages on it. If she was actually embarrassed about her momentary confusion she could have looked it up, but of course not, she wishes everyone to witness how cool she is by showing a complete lack of intellect and initiative.Â
I would be foolish not to understand that actually, there is a huge amount of pressure to not work, to look like all you do is have a good time at the weekend, but trust me, I seem to manage with both. I go to some of the biggest events in the south of england travelling and doing photography, I didnât sit at home on new years watching the clock tick over, I have a social life that us (as teens) are renowned for, yet I still work hard and donât damage my integrity as a reliable person by pretending to be something Iâm not. Just because someone is able to contribute an intelligent comment doesnât mean they canât have a laugh.Â
So this is a message to all those who feel pressured to hold back their intellect: donât.Â
Lavender's blue, dilly dilly...
So basically with my best friend's party coming up, we needed to find decorations to spruce her place up a bit. We knew the theme was glamorous but had no idea what we needed to make it so. That was until she hit on Lavenders of London. Literally, this place is a treasure trove. Oh my god. It was all I could do to resist planning my birthday party, and my wedding, and those of all my friends. And naturally the clinching point was the fact that at some stage they had provided fake ivy for the set of Harry Potter... This place had everything you need to give a party a bit of pizzazz so to speak. Bags for party favours; about a hundred different types of party favours; candles of all shapes, sizes, colours and heights; everything necessary for setting the table, napkin rings etc...; and LOTS of fake foliage. They have a whole upstairs section devoted to just that and it is magnificent. We even spotted a hooded seat which could be completely covered in flowers. It was incredible. In the end we settled for two huge black candelabras, 10 fat candles to go in them, 50 small tealights already in glass holders, two bunches of white twigs, two tin buckets, a bunch of fake black orchids and black rushes and two rolls of black and white fabric. Its going to be a gooood one! We're decorating tomorrow and I can't wait! Check out their website if you're interested: http://www.lavendersoflondon.com/
