The radiation scene and its aftermath were incredible. Going from "You should've told me!" to apologizing. Apologizing even though he couldn't have known. Apologizing despite knowing that his words probably mean nothing to them, because they don't see him as a human being. How the guilt stays on his mind for the entire movie, despite being in hell himself. He brings it up, again and again. He didn't mean to sentence someone to death. Even if they're the people who are doing the same thing to him. A mirror of a mistake he made in his past..? The submarine on the ocean floor is referenced in the button, with the chain breaking above it being the sub's chain, but also the DNA strands that break under radioactive rays. The core of what makes us human, unraveling at the bottom of the blood ocean, and the light is so bright, so bright...it calls...

the stars are dead. it doesn't matter that simon can see them. they're just dead light fading away. simon is dead from the minute he was welded in that sub. it doesn't matter that we can see him.

I think Iron Lung deserves to be Oscar nominated for the makeup and I'm completely serious. Tiny splashes of blood he didn't know to clean off because he doesn't have a mirror slowly turn into burns and then holes in Simon's head and you don't notice at all until it's too late. You think, oh, that must have been a burn all along, I guess, that's why it was still there. The bandages get bloodied, and then bloodier from the inside. Keeping makeup like that consistent at all is already a nightmare and they made it an arching plot point. The only makeup job I didn't care for was at the very, very end, and it's for the usual "building on top of because you can't take away from the surface" reasons, it's completely fine from this size production.
