drabble written for @moongrail
normally defeat comes a lot easier , for what you didn’t accomplish today , you could succeed in tomorrow . except in this instance where he’s just witnessed the most horrendous act of violence in all his years spent fighting for , and alongside the royal family of both the moon and earth clans .
the daughter of neo queen serenity and king endymion being impaled by a sword , it’s metal protruding through her middle , painted with her blood , dripping off it’s tip and staining the dewy morning grass below .
gold hues bulge , pop out of his head , whilst his mind tries to process ; apparently he’s already screaming ━ or at least he thinks so . there’s an echoing he can’t quite distinguish , but being it just the two of them now , he would assume it’s himself making noise seeing as though she probably can’t .
he’s cursing every deity for playing things out like this , for his incapability to protect her from the deadly attack , and at least hopes that he’ll make it before ... more tragedy strikes . catching her right as her trembling knees buckle . easing them both to the ground comfortably , to a position where he can hold her close and ease and support her lolling neck .
his lower lip is already a mighty trembling quiver after having fully examined her state . she’s incredibly weak , skin turning more of an ashy gray with each pint of blood she’s loosing . god the blood , all the blood . it’s still pouring out of her . the priest doesn’t even think twice , just tears a portion of his white robe to use as a rag to stem the bleeding ; hands firm on her front and back , applying as much pressure as he can cause he thinks maybe , just maybe , he could still save her .
a hiss of pain erupts through her clenched teeth , sending a shock wave of his own agony to run in his bloodstream . seeing her in such discomfort torments him so . her signature odango hairstyle is slightly undone , and he brushes a stray ringlet sticking to the side of her sweat covered face behind her ear .
“ i know this is immensely painful , my maiden . but ━ but you’re going to be okay . alright ? you’re gonna get through this . you will . and i know this because you’re so strong . stronger than you care to believe . “
the heir to the moon kingdom smiles at his sentiment , had they not been in such a grim situation he would have reciprocated the gesture . no , instead he tries his damn hardest to stop the crimson liquid from continuing to flow out of her .
“ but i’m still human . “ her voice is scratchy and so unlike her , “ no ━ no matter .. what i’ll always be a human girl . and we don’t always pull through . “ she wheezes , restraining a fit of coughs from coming out , and swallows hard before continuing . “ i’m sorry . i’m so sorry for that , helios . “ red eyes wobble from the water gathered up there , promptly her eyelids squeeze shut and she’s crying rivers .
he’s trying to refrain from doing the same , but it seems like such an impossible task at the moment . so he just curls around her some more , presses her frame close to his as she continues to sob , one of her gloved hands miraculously came up and took a firm hold of his cloak . “ i ━ i don’t want to leave you , helios ! i don’t want that at all ! “
elysion’s priest has become completely undone , finally letting his own tears fall as he gently rocks her back and forth like she were a newborn . it takes a few minutes before the two of them have composed themselves enough to speak again . pulling back he intertwines their blood stained hands together .
“ you don’t have to worry about that , i’m gonna get you the help you need an ━ “
“ there’s no time . i’ve ━ i’ve ... wasted it all ... on tears ... instead of words . “
she’s stunned him into complete silence , stillness . only to be brought back to reality when she coughs , sending a small puddle of blood to dribble down her chin , he promptly wipes it away with his sleeve .
“ i won’t anymore .... “ she continues , “ i ━ i love you . i love you helios . so much ..... and because i love you ... i’m going to ask ━ ask that you don’t .... sulk over me . i’ll be reborn again ... who knows ? if not ━ if not i just want you to be happy . find a new love possibly ..... and live life to the fullest ━ no matter what . “ weary is her gaze when she looks up at him , and he can’t help the way that his heart plummets because it’s hitting him now that this is it . these are her last words . she’s going to die .
stunned by being addressed by her name , a bright smile surfaces right away . “ i like it when you call me that ! “
her eyes close and he’s about to shake her into consciousness again when they suddenly pop open again , a little to fast perhaps since she blinks a few times to adjust her vision .
oh god her parents , they’re gong to be devastated .
“ i’ll take care of them , i promise . and i’ll take care of all those you love . “
‘ the king and queen are going to hate me . “ he thinks to himself .
“ good . “ she nods before settling and accepting that her life was coming to an end , nuzzling into the comfort of her loves arms . her last breath is of the phrase “ thank you .” and helios knows it’s directed towards him , but he can’t help but wonder for what . he didn’t prevent this from happening . in fact he never did much for her . he stayed in another world for so long , and had only just return after many , many years . only spending a few months with her complete bliss .
the pad of this thumb is stroking her cheek , with water dripping one by one down his own and upon her face . sniffling loudly and kicking himself again because he should have said this to her when she was still breathing .
“ i love you , usagi ‘small lady’ serenity . i will always love you , nothing could ever change that , ever . “ hand pushes her pink bangs back and he places a chaste kiss to her hairline .
it’s not long after her death that he returns to elysion . he tries to stick it out pon her request, but it’s all , too hard , seeing the heartbreak in her parents eyes as they try to cope day by day without their only child.
and her friends gradually move on too . no one forgets about her , but they don’t think of the cheerful pinkette quite as often .
plus he has a job to attend to still . protecting the dreams of everyone on earth .
there are some extraordinary dreamers out in the world too , none like her though . none will ever be like her .
call him selfish if you will , but he was happy having that part to remember her by . it was a part nobody else but him knew about . how beautiful her dreams were . and what great power they stored .
helios set’s aside a time now everyday to pray for her , sometimes even talk too . where they first kissed in her dream when she was turned into an adult . it was her favorite place .
