Blog 10: Ethics as an Interpreter
I'm thinking a lot about the moral precepts that direct my work as a nature interpreter as I set out on my path. These guidelines are more than just a list of regulations to abide by; they are firmly held convictions and ideals that influence how I engage with nature and share its marvels with others. I will examine the fundamental values I bring to my work as a nature interpreter, my sense of social and environmental responsibility, and the methods that work best for my particular style in this examination of my personal ethics.
My ethic as a nature interpreter is based on a great respect for the natural world and a firm conviction in its inherent worth. In my opinion, nature is a complex and linked web of life that deserves our respect and care rather than just being a resource to be used for human benefit. This viewpoint is based on the understanding that all living things, including ecosystems, have intrinsic value, regardless of how useful they may be to humans. It guides me to approach each encounter with nature with humility, wonder, and astonishment. It informs my interactions with nature.
Central to my ethic is the principle of stewardship – the idea that we have a moral responsibility to care for and protect the environment for future generations. As a nature interpreter, I see myself as a guardian of the natural world, entrusted with the task of fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of its beauty and fragility. This responsibility extends beyond mere preservation to active engagement in conservation efforts and advocacy for sustainable practices. I believe that we have a duty to leave the Earth in a better state than we found it, and that begins with each of us taking meaningful action to protect the environment.
As a nature interpreter, I see the value of building relationships between people and various communities as well as between people and the natural environment. I think that nature transcends social, political, and cultural divides to inspire, heal, and bring people together. In order to empower people from all backgrounds to explore and interact with nature, I work to establish inclusive and accessible settings. My dedication lies in eliminating obstacles to involvement and accessibility, be they social, cultural, or financial, and in elevating the perspectives of underrepresented groups in discussions about the environment.
An essential aspect of my ethic as a nature interpreter is a commitment to lifelong learning and growth. I recognize that our understanding of the natural world is constantly evolving, shaped by new discoveries, perspectives, and experiences. As such, I approach my work with a spirit of curiosity and open-mindedness, always seeking to deepen my knowledge and refine my interpretive skills. I believe in the power of storytelling, art, and experiential learning to convey complex ecological concepts in accessible and engaging ways, and I am constantly exploring innovative approaches to nature interpretation.
In addition to fostering connections between people and nature, I believe in the importance of fostering connections within communities and across sectors. Environmental issues are inherently interconnected and require collaborative, multi-stakeholder approaches to address effectively. As a nature interpreter, I see myself as a bridge-builder, facilitating dialogue and collaboration among diverse stakeholders to find common ground and develop holistic solutions to environmental challenges. I recognize that meaningful change often requires collective action and that by working together, we can achieve far more than we ever could alone.
In conclusion, my personal ethic as a nature interpreter is rooted in a deep reverence for the natural world, a sense of responsibility towards the environment and society, a commitment to fostering connections, and a dedication to lifelong learning and collaboration. These principles guide my practice and shape my interactions with both nature and people, inspiring me to work towards a more just, sustainable, and harmonious relationship between humanity and the Earth.
Blog 8: The Wonders of Bioluminescence: Nature's Spectacular Light Show
Welcome back to my nature blog, fellow armchair explorers! Today, I want to take you on a journey into one of the most enchanting phenomena in the natural world: bioluminescence. Picture yourself sitting on a quiet beach at night, gazing out at the dark expanse of the ocean. Suddenly, the water begins to glow with an otherworldly blue-green light, as if thousands of stars have descended beneath the waves. This mesmerizing display is just one example of nature's incredible ability to astonish and inspire.
Bioluminescence is a fascinating form of chemiluminescence found in various marine organisms, from tiny plankton to large jellyfish and even some fish species. It occurs when certain chemicals within these organisms react with oxygen to produce light, resulting in a breathtaking natural light show that can be seen in oceans all around the world.
One of the most famous examples of bioluminescence is the phenomenon known as "sea sparkle," which occurs when billions of tiny dinoflagellates, a type of single-celled algae, light up the ocean with their bioluminescent glow. These microscopic organisms are found in abundance in coastal waters, where they play a vital role in marine ecosystems. When disturbed by waves or movement, the dinoflagellates release a burst of light, creating a magical spectacle that has captivated sailors and explorers for centuries.
But bioluminescence isn't just limited to the ocean – it can also be found in various terrestrial organisms, including fireflies, glowworms, and even certain fungi. Imagine walking through a dark forest illuminated by the soft glow of bioluminescent mushrooms, or watching as fireflies dance through the night sky like living fairy lights. These enchanting displays remind us of the beauty and wonder that can be found in even the darkest corners of the natural world.
As a nature enthusiast and avid explorer, witnessing bioluminescence in person has been one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of my life. It's a reminder that there are still mysteries to be uncovered and wonders to behold, right here on our own planet. Birdsong is one of the most enchanting and ubiquitous forms of music found in nature. Across the globe, birds produce a diverse array of melodies, calls, and chirps, each serving unique purposes in communication, mating rituals, and territorial displays. Here's how bird song fits into the broader context of music in nature.
Birdsong is primarily a form of communication among birds. Different species have distinct songs that they use to attract mates, establish territory boundaries, warn of predators, and coordinate group activities. Through their songs, birds convey information about their species, identity, and intentions to other birds in their vicinity. Birdsong is remarkably complex, often featuring intricate patterns of notes, rhythms, and pitches. Some birds, like the nightingale and mockingbird, are renowned for their ability to mimic the songs of other bird species, as well as environmental sounds such as car alarms or human speech. This complexity has long fascinated musicians and scientists alike, inspiring research into the underlying mechanisms of avian vocalization. Birdsong has deep cultural significance in many human societies. Throughout history, people have incorporated bird motifs and melodies into their music, art, and literature as symbols of freedom, beauty, and the natural world. From ancient myths and folk songs to classical compositions and contemporary music, birdsong continues to inspire human creativity and imagination. I don't have one particular song that makes me feel closer to nature, it's mostly playlist I have from long car drives or an album I'm interested in at the moment. I big add into feeling part of nature through the power of music would be the incorporation of bird song. I always know that it is spring when I here the birds chirping outside my window.
I do struggle with this aspect of the assignment as I usually try to disconnect and not use my electronics when in nature.

Blog 6: Integrity
“There is no peculiar merit in ancient things, but there is merit in integrity, and integrity entails the keeping together of the parts of any whole, and if these parts are scattered throughout time, then the maintenance of integrity entails a knowledge, a memory, of ancient things. …. To think, feel or act as though the past is done with, is equivalent to believing that a railway station through which our train has just passed, only existed for as long as our train was in it” (Edward Hyams).
The chapter by Edward Hyams explores the complex relationship between the past and the present as well as the complicated idea of integrity. Fundamentally, it makes the case for integrity preservation, highlighting the importance of preserving any system's or entity's coherence and wholeness even when there may not be intrinsic value in something being old.
Hyams begins by asserting that integrity is not confined to antiquity but rather involves the cohesive organization of the various components of a whole. This notion suggests that integrity transcends time and is relevant regardless of whether the elements constituting it are ancient or contemporary. By framing integrity in this broader context, Hyams prompts readers to consider the timeless principles and values that underpin the concept.
Furthermore, the verse emphasizes how the past and present are intertwined and states that knowledge of history is necessary to uphold integrity. According to Hyams, ignoring the past is equivalent to ignoring important facets of the present because the two are inextricably intertwined. He illustrates this idea by using the metaphor of a train station, saying that thinking of the past as unimportant is likened to thinking of a station as existing only to the extent that our train uses it. By highlighting the continued significance of historical background in forming modern reality, this parallel highlights the folly of temporal myopia.
Moreover, Hyams emphasizes the role of memory in upholding integrity, implying that forgetting or ignoring the past jeopardizes the coherence of the present. Memory serves as a repository of knowledge and experience, enabling individuals and societies to navigate the complexities of existence with a sense of continuity and purpose. By preserving and honoring the past, individuals can cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world, thus enriching their capacity for integrity.
In essence, Hyams' passage encourages readers to adopt a holistic perspective that recognizes the intrinsic value of both ancient and contemporary elements. It challenges the notion that merit is contingent upon age, advocating instead for an appreciation of integrity grounded in the interconnectedness of past, present, and future. By acknowledging the enduring influence of history on the present moment, individuals can cultivate a deeper sense of integrity and purpose in their lives.

The under discussed topic of ecofacism within the environmental field.
No, you are not better for making so many sacrifices you are miserable.
The term "ecofascism" refers to an extremist ideology that combines elements of environmentalism with authoritarian and fascist principles. While environmentalism, at its core, advocates for the protection and preservation of the natural world, ecofascism distorts these principles by promoting oppressive and exclusionary tactics in the pursuit of environmental goals.
Ecofascist groups often advocate for extreme measures to address environmental issues, such as population control, eugenics, and ethnic cleansing, under the guise of "protecting" the environment. They may promote the idea that certain groups of people, often based on race or ethnicity, are responsible for environmental degradation and advocate for their removal or extermination to restore ecological balance. (I have commonly noticed ecofacism in the criticism of cultural practices of indigenous peoples and their diet, I do believe that it is important to understand geography and the varying socio-economic status of certain marginalized groups within North America. Families living within Northern Canada suffer from the highest rates of food insecurity in the country.)
These extremist views are not representative of mainstream environmentalism and are widely condemned by environmental organizations and activists. Ecofascism runs counter to the principles of equality, justice, and human rights that are central to the environmental movement.
It's essential to recognize that ecofascism is a fringe ideology and does not reflect the broader environmental movement, which is grounded in principles of inclusivity, diversity, and social justice. Mainstream environmentalism seeks to address environmental issues through peaceful, democratic means, working collaboratively with communities, governments, and stakeholders to enact positive change while upholding human rights and dignity.
Nevertheless, it's important to remain vigilant against the spread of extremist ideologies, including ecofascism, and to actively challenge and counteract their influence. By promoting education, dialogue, and inclusivity within the environmental movement, we can build a more just and sustainable future for all.
Art and Nature Interpretation: A Tale As Old As Time Humans have been interpreting nature through art for millennia. Some of the oldest cave paintings discovered are of animals. “Archaeologists believe they have discovered the world’s oldest-known representational artwork: three wild pigs painted deep in a limestone cave on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi at least 45,500 years ago.” (Cascone, S. 2021) These animal depictions are a lingering artistic representation of the kinds of stories and interpretations that humans have been expressing since the dawn of time. Perhaps these early humans were leaving their ochre art pieces on the walls of caves as diagrams for others. These were simply art interpretation installations that managed to last thousands of years.

Nature, it seems, is an incredible inspiration for humans. In turn the art made by humans can connect each other to nature. Some of the most famous paintings transcend time and open the world of nature to the viewer. Such as the work “Under the Wave off Kanagawa” by Katsushika Hokusai. Which is an incredibly moving piece of art which cautions folks taking to the water. Much like how a nature interpreter who worked on the water might caution folks today to take precautions and don their life vests if they want to adventure by sea.

As the textbook states “Art has the power and transforming qualities to move people in extraordinary ways.” (Beck et al., 2018, p. 230). The power of a painting, poem, song or theatrical element, can truly capture the attention of an audience. Public art instalments such as those created by the Sound Symposium in conjunction with Memorial University Newfoundland’s Botanical Gardens thoughtfully blend nature interpretation, sonic art performances, and dance for an ethereal experience for the viewer. (Sound Symposium, 2024)
I have first hand experience using art as a means for interpreting nature. As a multimedia artist, my artwork “Forbidden Foxglove” was chosen to be part of an art exhibit. This piece is one in a series of paintings all done on hand stretched black velvet, and all with the theme of toxic plants. Others in the series included plants that are harmful to humans such as foxglove, monkshood, and deadly nightshade. This painting opened the discussion about native and naturalised plants, invasive species, and common plants that may be toxic. It brought the information to the viewer without having to step foot in nature. This too, while not a cave painting, nor a world famous wave block print - hopefully challenged the viewer to take another look at the natural world around them. In my mind, much of nature interpretation is bringing people to those proverbial doors to the natural world, and hoping that they will then throw the doors open and challenge themselves to discover what is outside.

Blog 4: The Beauty In Nature
One of the most beautiful parts of nature I have personally witnessed was Lion’s Head National Park. I really loved the crystal blue waters, it looked unreal. Art can be used by anyone to interpret nature. It is not necessary to be a musician, actor, or artist in order to interpret through art (Beck et al., 2018).

Lions Head Provincial Park is an amazing haven of natural beauty, tucked away in the untamed Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, Canada. It enthralls visitors with its jaw-dropping views, immaculate beaches, and varied ecosystems. This magical park, which covers more than 500 hectares, beckons nature lovers, adventure seekers, and outdoor enthusiasts to explore its breathtaking landscapes and lose themselves in its tranquil atmosphere.
The towering limestone cliffs of Lions Head Provincial Park, which rise sharply from the glistening waters of Georgian Bay, are among its most outstanding characteristics. These enormous cliffs, which have been shaped by geological processes over millennia, provide a striking backdrop that draws attention and inspires wonder in everyone who sees them. Hikers can follow the park's beautiful trails, which meander through verdant meadows and forests, to viewpoints that provide expansive views of the bay and the surroundings. no amount of privilege will save your life.
This week’s topic is by no means light, and I’m not going to make it any lighter, so my apologies in advance.
Nature is all around us – it’s not only four hours north with no cell reception, but it’s also the tree growing in your backyard, the flowers outside your favourite coffee shop, and even the spiders you’re trying to kill on your ceiling. Nature is everywhere if you tune in to look, but so is privilege.
What is privilege? My current definition of privilege is an abstract currency knowingly or unknowingly used throughout one’s life to gain an increased advantage over others. I will admit that I am no stranger to privilege. I was born into a white middle-class family and sent to a private elementary school for eight years. I grew up in Oakville, which (if you know, you know) trust me, you can tell by the houses – look it up. In high school, we used to joke that you could tell the difference between the students’ and teachers’ cars in the parking lot because all the teachers had your typical Hondas or Nissans, while the students would show up in daddy’s Ferrari or Porsche. From a young age, my parents always taught my sister and me that even though we weren’t in the bracket of buying a Ferrari, life-wise, we would be relatively okay because of this privilege. To be honest, that never sat well with me, and it still doesn’t to this day (but a story for another time).
The example used in this week’s content was about the story of the Lake Timiskaming canoeing tragedy. These boys went to a prestigious school; they had the best equipment – they were privileged, and yet their canoes still sank, killing thirteen people. Nature gave us a haunting reminder in 1978 that it is a privilege to experience it.
In 2023, nature horribly reminded me of this lesson when I learned that my good friend and roommate had been killed on her way to work. She was 22. She had everything going for her: a fantastic job while finishing university, an amazing group of friends, and even an amazing family. She had the privilege of this incredible and daring life she lived (that I can’t and won’t fit in this post), yet it still couldn’t save her life.

Many people take nature (and life) for granted. As a nature interpreter, the most important lesson to help teach others is when we interpret and enjoy nature, we must be careful to respect nature and who we are in nature, because no amount of privilege will save your life.

According to Oxford Dictionary privilege is defined as “a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group” lets take this definition and bring it into the perspective of nature interpretation. Privilege will generally affect people in the factors of education, socio-economic status and culture/community.
In the context of nature interpretation, privilege can indeed influence individuals based on factors such as education, socio-economic status, and culture/community. Let's explore how:
Education: Individuals with a higher level of education may have a more in-depth understanding of ecological systems, biodiversity, and environmental issues ( this does not discount the knowledge of individuals without higher level education, there are more methods of learning than academia). They might appreciate the intricacies of nature on a more profound level due to formal education in the sciences or related fields. Nature interpreters need to recognize varying levels of environmental knowledge among visitors. Privilege in education might manifest in a more nuanced appreciation of ecological complexities, allowing for more advanced and specialized discussions during interpretive programs.
Socio-Economic Status: Those with higher socio-economic status may have the means to access and explore natural spaces more frequently. They might afford outdoor gear, travel expenses, or participate in activities like guided nature tours, which can enhance their connection with nature. Nature interpreters should be aware of economic barriers that some visitors may face. Creating inclusive programs that cater to diverse economic backgrounds ensures that everyone, regardless of financial status, has the opportunity to engage meaningfully with nature.

Although I do not plan to pursue a career in environmental interpretation, I will discuss how I will apply environmental interpretation techniques to my relationship with the environment and potentially to my future professional endeavors in this post.
I don’t want to cause harm when fixing a problem
As an environmental interpreter, my ideal job would be to offer a humanist perspective on the earth, since it is incapable of defending or speaking for itself. In this instance, the terms "humanist" and "humanism" refer to the advocacy of an ethical life approach toward the natural environment. Consider if a solution would negatively impact other beings.
Be aware of what is being done
Processes regarding the protection of the environment seem to be overlooked by the general public. I don’t mean to say the current situation is perfect, but efforts are made to conserve and mitigate impacts. Finding a realistic co-existence of human (we already do this but the thought behind the comments is based on the context of exchange) and natural environment.
Ask questions. How do you understand the topic? Consider all outcomes.
What actions are required of humans by the environment? achieving more carbon neutrality? Moving away from energy sources that produce emissions? What is eco-friendly's cost-benefit ratio? Do solar panels produce more waste than energy that is efficient? Every option and alternative needs to be considered. These questions should be asked of anyone who is passionate about the environment. Being an environmental activist and advocate involves more than just picketing; it also involves raising awareness and coming up with solutions. I became aware of the extent to which lobbyist groups influence the political process and, consequently, the potential impact of environmental stewardship through my involvement with an environmental consultant. Those who are environmental activists tend to ignore this element.
In natural interpretation, it's critical to identify environmental issues and devise remedies that will both enhance the situation of a particular problem and avoid having a detrimental effect on others.
Manage expectations, be realistic, be critical
As a Canadian I also try to be aware of the realism of popular solutions and how effective they can be in Canada. An example I’ll use is the use of EVs (Electric Vehicles) many Canadian cities are very far apart which can cause an issue with charging availability and another looked-over factor some parts of Canada are too cold for EVs to start. In a role as a natural interpreter I believe it is not only important to understand science but also to understand the socio-economics and reality of how humans make improvements for the environment.
In my approach of natural interpretation I want to include understanding the livelihood of others when coming up with solutions.

I really enjoyed the creativity behind your post. The use of captions to introduce subtopics made the read more engaging. I especially liked the caption “I don’t want to cause harm when fixing a problem” and the paragraph that followed. I don’t recall any other blog posts discussing the harms of nature interpretation … especially how common-knowledge “solutions” to environmental problems (which an environmental interpreter may preach) can negatively impact human beings. Would you be able to expand on this? Are you referring to how such “solutions” can affect marginalized and/or Indigenous communities?
I also liked that you addressed the importance of emphasizing environmental issues to your audience. However, do you believe that the doom and gloom of such information (especially in this day and age) can impair the opportunity to foster pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours?
In your post you mentioned that you do not plan on becoming an environmental interpreter. However, if you were to educate friends and family about what you have learned in post-secondary ecology courses (say on a hike, for example) what methods would you employ to help them understand, connect to, and enjoy nature? What would you do to try to foster pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours?

Yes part of not doing harm does have to do with marginalized communities but also the possibility of further damage to the environment.
Human example: A load minority preaching that veganism will "save the planet", the blanket statement sounds fine. But then there is the northern part of Canada having the highest rates of food insecurity in the country along with indigenous peoples being confronted for carrying out cultural practices (I believe everyone's culture should be respected). I do think statements or preaching like this can at times border on eco-facism which I think should be more openly spoken about among students studying the environmental sciences.
Environmental example: The production of making solar panels and batteries for EVs also requires mining which already has many impacts on the environment. I am neutral on this stance, I'm not for or against it is what we have to work with at the moment, I just acknowledge that the solution still has a negative impact in the production.
When discussing environmental matters (this should also apply to most topics) with friends and family, I try to meet people on the same level and build from there. As someone privileged to receive a university education I like to keep in mind that "school may not be for everyone but learning is". When discussing the environment and addressing issues I feel it is more important to be factual and informative rather than emotional as this can contribute to diagnosis like climate anxiety and depression among youth.

My ideal role as an environmental interpreter only makes sense to be one that entails my passion for nature, education, and outdoor activities. As a dream job, I envision myself working as an environmental interpreter in the national parks of British Columbia or Alberta, where the diverse landscapes and nature are a breathtaking canvas for environmental exploration. My role would involve connecting the beauty of these parks with the minds of visitors. As an nature interpreter, I would facilitate a deeper connection between people and the beauty of nature. I would encourage people to appreciate the little things, pause and relax, inhale the crisp air, listen to sound of the wind. Observe the colours, the animals, live in the moment. Look at all the different kinds of trees you can see, listen to the different bird chirps. In my role as a nature interpreter, my passion for nature would be the key focus. Through my work, I would aim to not only showcase the breathtaking landscapes and the diverse array of flora and fauna but also to instill in others the same awe and appreciation that fuels my own passion for nature.
The duties of my role would encompass a variety of activities such as hiking on trails, exploring the lakes, skiing and snowboarding, and many more. Although I am not pursuing a career in nature interpretation, I am planning to go into teaching. I would use these values of teaching while leading informative and engaging hikes throughout the park’s trails. Not only would these hikes showcase the stunning scenery throughout the seasons, but also provide opportunities to share knowledge about different species of plants and animals that live in these areas. During the winter months, my role would include winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and hockey. Although I would not consider myself to be a pro skier or snowboarder, it is such a fun activity. These activities not only serve as a recreational outlet but also allow for individuals to connect with the winter environment. Observing your surroundings while navigating the slopes is a scene everyone should see!
To excel in this role as a nature interpreter, a diverse set of skills would be needed. Strong communication would be crucial to convey engaging conversations such as those on the hikes. Many individuals often overlook the fortune we have, particularly in terms of the natural beauty that surrounds us. Having effective communication skills becomes crucial to express and convey the privilege we have to be surrounded by such exquisite nature. A strong knowledge of the different ecosystems and the fauna and flora of the area would ensure a great experience for all.

Blog1: Having a sense of place in nature
Greetings and welcome to my Nature Interpretation blog!
Allow me to introduce myself first. As a fourth-year environmental management student, my perspective on the field is a blend of economics and science. My name is Daphne. I continue to approach environmental science with an awareness of the socioeconomic problems that affect the world's diverse populations. In the care and study of the environment I hope that peers will also be able to consider the circumstances of their fellow man as well as being understanding of the many cultures on this planet.
The theme of this week is having a "sense of place" in nature.
When it comes to nature, everyone's trip is unique. This might come easily to some people, but it wasn't at all easy for me. Being a bit of a city girl, I grew up in the Greater Toronto Area and suffer from numerous allergies related to the outdoors, with pollen being the worst offender.
My relationship with nature occurs more from a distance, I adore and study from a far for the most part. Nature may not be on my side but I do believe in the conservation and mitigation of affects on the natural world. More recently I have branched out to physically embracing nature, visiting conservation areas and going on hikes.
It's likely that you may encounter the concept of having a sense of place in nature in multiple locations. My hike in Lion's Head was one of the most memorable events of my life. My hiking buddy and I took a detour on the trail and ended up spending seven hours reaching the beach, which involved a significant amount of bouldering. Despite this setback, I felt incredibly connected to the natural world and my surroundings when hiking Lion's Head. It was an amazing experience, however it might have been the tiredness.
The sight of the crystal waters from the Lion's Head Lookout was breathtaking, and the sensation of the chilly beach water thereafter was altogether new. We had a clear sky and the sun shone brightly as we navigated this novel experience. Since the Canadian government is the nation's greatest landowner, I will continue to have optimism for the future of nature if at least one of its goals is to protect and preserve breathtaking views of the natural world. This would be my personal interpretation in regards to how having a "sense of place" is defined in Interpreting cultural and natural heritage: For A Better World.
