me sitting here wondering if ari gold meant to make this sound kinda gay or if i’m just squinting at it too hard

nikolai at the beginning: remember when you would do anything for a girl, because you thought she would save your life? no woman is worth dying for anymore. we were born too late.

nikolai, in ollie’s arms at the end of the film: you saved me.

as much as i adore brotps and i live for boys crushing toxic masculinity by being able to call each other “dear” and be affectionate in a platonic way, i almost want this to be intentional purely for the poetry of it. it’s so cute.

what do i believe, ari.

are they soulmates.

something about the way ollie, whose dad died in the lake, who contemplates killing himself in the same way because he cannot stand the grief of who he is and who he lost, jumps into the lake after nikolai is knocked unconscious and falls in.

the way ollie has every reason to not bother running to the docks when he hears nikolai arguing with the trespassing boys, just as nikolai had no reason to still fight anyone to protect the lake.

the way ollie does run to stop nik, and does jump in after him, and does save him from drowning despite hating the water and wanting to die, and comes out instead saving a life and (subtextually) finding his meaning in nikolai...

i'm emotional about them.

"Excuse me! Hey—! One moment, please!" Nikolai flagged him down with a wave. He was sweating, hard, soaked through his dark red polo, and his boots and trousers were dusty as if he had been walking for a while in the heat. He didn't slow, though, determined to the last step that brought him next to TK and (he hoped) his and Ollie's savior.

"My friend and I have found ourselves in trouble. Our car has broken down, you see," Nikolai panted. "Down the road. Several miles, yes? Do you have, ehhh... the jumping... jumping cables?" The words, thickly accented, rolled awkwardly off his tongue. He mimed clipping clamps onto a terminal. English was harder when he was fighting exhaustion. "Or... or a phone? To call for a truck?"

"Whoa..." no way. All the way out here? In the middle of nowhere? "What...?" He was decelerating before the man began trying to wave him down, and sure he'd read mugged-on-the-highway type stuff but what was he gonna do, leave this guy to starve (or dehydrate) in the middle of the Texan desert? No, he wasn't. The window was almost all the way down by the time TK rolled to a stop, so this man, panting, came to rest framed by the narrow space there, hands leaning most of his weight onto the frame.

TK had, like, bottled water somewhere. Nothing with proper electrolytes but he had water, and the car's AC had been maintaining a comfortable temperature, now being seeped out into the heat of the middle-of-nowhere-Texas.

"Hey," he said. "Yeah. Yeah, I got cables." Somewhere in the back of his car he had a full 'just in case' kit, including an EPIRB, jumper cables, couple gallons of water, first aid... the sort of stuff you'd expect of someone who survived for a living. The doors unlocked with a hearty thunk. He nodded down the road: "Jump in. Your friend's this way?"

"Slava bogu!" Nikolai gestured loosely heavenward in quick prayer and climbed into the vehicle. "You are a lifesaver."

He all but collapsed once in the cool and safety of the passenger seat, exhaustion finally catching up. Indulgently, he lifted the hem of his polo and watched as it bubbled out against the glorious pumping AC.

"Ah... Yes, yes," belated, blinking away the sweat trying to drip into his eyes, "down this road for several miles. Cannot miss us. I told Ollie last night, I said to him 'Ollie, I have a bad feeling in my gut, and I think we should keep driving until we get into a town' but we were both tired and he didn't want to listen, so of course... she breaks down and won't start when we wake up."

Nikolai clucked his tongue. He hated Texas so far—hot weather was grand when there was something to look at, when there was plenty of water to sail and keep you cool. But this? Deserts were hellish. Why anyone sane should want to live in a place like this was beyond him.

"Do you know how far from here it is to civilization?"

Omg wait. Entirely self indulgent but AU with a 13-14 yo orphaned Nik meeting your muse and following after them like a stray puppy. Doesn't speak more than a single word of English. Doesn't care. He has found your muse and he's now coming with them wherever they're going.

Might steal their wallet though.

Thinking about how obviously Nik is just very loyal and loves Ollie so obviously he's going to call him his brother, but also thinking about how they canonically if Ari is to be trusted with any piece of a timeline lol haven't actually known each other that long. Maybe a month? IIRC? Before going to Sway Lake? And just.

Do you think Nikolai latches onto other men so hard and quickly because he was alone by the time he was 13? How much is genuine, and how much is trying very hard to be liked and have other people stick around because he is afraid of losing connections? Is that also why he embellishes stories and butters people up? I think so.
