How to Make a Magnetic Compass
The magnetic compass is an ancient navigational tool used to indicate the four cardinal directions: north, south, east and west. It's composed of a magnetized needle that aligns itself with the earth's magnetic field to point north. If you find yourself lost without a compass, you can easily make your own using a piece of magnetized metal and a bowl of water.
1. Decide what to use for your compass needle. A compass needle can be made from any piece of metal that can be magnetized. A sewing needle is a straightforward, practical choice, especially since it's an item you'd normally find in a first aid or survival kit that you might have on hand on a backpacking trip. You could also try these other "needles": - paperclip - razor blade - safety pin - hairpin
2. Choose a needle "magnetizer." You can magnetize your needle using a variety of methods: tapping it with a piece of steel or iron, rubbing it with a magnet, or rubbing it on another item that magnetizes it with static electricity.
3. Magnetize the needle. Whether you're using a sewing needle or another metal item, rub the item with the magnet. Stroke the needle in the same direction, rather than back and forth, using steady, even strokes. After 50 strokes, the needle will be magnetized.
4. Insert the needle or place the needle in/on the plastic bottle cap or cork. If you're using a sewing needle, insert it horizontally into the edge of the coin-sized piece of cork, so that the needle pierces through the cork and comes out the other side. Push the needle through until the same amount of needle protrudes from either side of the cork.
5. Float the compass. Fill a bowl or jar with a few inches of water and place the compass on the water. The magnetized needle will align itself with the earth's magnetic field to point north to south.

How To Make a Transforming Ninja Star (8-Pointed)
This 8 point ninja star is one of the coolest origami you'll ever learn to fold. What makes this shuriken so special is that it can also transform into some sort of round blade.
This transforming origami ninja star is actually quite easy. Just follow the instructions carefully and you'll be able to make one. You're going to need eight pieces of square paper.
1. With one of the eight squares, fold it in half by folding the upper left corner to the bottom right corner, then unfold.
2. Fold in half diagonally the other way, then unfold.
3. Fold the top half backwards, then unfold.
4. Poke the center with your finger so that it pops in.
5. Fold the upper left corner to the center, but don't fold pass the center divider.
6. Fold the bottom left corner to the center.
7. Fold the upper half to the lower half while inverting the right crease to the center.
8. Make the seven remaining pieces in the same way.
9. Connect all eight pieces in the way shown in the video.

How To Make a Paper Ninja Star Shuriken Origami
1. Begin with a rectangular piece of paper. Ordinary loose paper or construction paper will do. We will make a square piece of paper from this. If you're already starting with a square piece of origami paper, skip the next two steps.
2. Fold the diagonal of the square. Fold the top right hand corner diagonally down so the top of the paper lines up with the left side, forming a point at the top right corner.
3. Remove the extra piece. Cut or carefully tear along the edge so you are left with a square of paper.
4. Fold the square in half. The fold should be parallel to the edges.
5. . Fold each half once again. The fold should be parallel to the edges.
6. Fold the ends. Fold the end diagonally, so the edges line up.
7. Repeat. Repeat this fold, on each end of each strip, making sure the folds are oriented as shown.
8. Make the triangle fold. Fold the end on the diagonal again. You should end with a big triangle facing you and two smaller triangles facing away from you.
9. Repeat. Repeat this same fold on each end of each strip. Make sure the orientations go opposite one another, as shown.
10. Turn over only the piece on the left and arrange the two parts, as shown.
11. Put the right piece on top of the left piece. There should be a square in the center of each piece that lines up, but if you can't find it yet, don't worry. Just line up the middles.
12. Fold the uppermost point inwards on the diagonal and tuck the point into the pocket.
13. Fold the bottom point upwards on the diagonal and tuck the point into the pocket.
14. Flip the whole thing over.
15. Fold the right point on the diagonal just as before and tuck it into the pocket.
16. Fold the left and final point on the diagonal and tuck it into the last pocket. You may have to coax a little to get it tucked in.
17. Put some tape in the middle of the tucked in middles. This will keep the ninja star from becoming undone.
18. Enjoy your ninja star.

How to Make a Paper Airplane
First you fold the paper in half lengthwise, and then unfold. This initial crease is simply a guideline for the next folds. Fold the top two corners down so they meet the center crease. This is the classic way to start a paper airplane, and probably what you first learned as a kid. To make the process of folding easy, I recommend to pause the video after each step.

Make a Lighter out of Battery and Gum Wrapper Not everyone always has a lighter or matchbox handy, which is why learning how to quickly and creatively start a fire is a good survival tip to know. This unexpected trick allows you to create a flame using only a foil gum wrapper and battery. First, you make igniter strips using the wrapper from a stick of gum. Shave a bit off of each of the sides of the wrapper, creating a bridge about 2 mm wide in the middle. One strip can yield about three igniters. Next, find a battery. AA batteries are best for this, but AAA, C or D will work as well. This trick is great for people who hike or camp and often use battery-powered flashlights. Carefully hold the ends of the gum wrapper to the ends of your battery. Then, prepare for your wrapper to ignite. Watch how unbelievably fast the foil lights in the demonstration video.
