Dyno Shootout at JDM Garage
Jdm garage opened its doors extra early to prepare for the siege of modified cars that were about to arrive. The workshop floor seemed eerily quiet considering how many cars would soon be rolling through.
The first car of the day was a tasty dc2 type R, it was nice to see it sporting a set of regamaster evo's as opposed to rota slipstream reps. Jerry the owner was experimenting with a new spoon ECU along with a standard one. The two gave surprising results, spoon didnt provide more power than the standard set up, but it had an improved more usable powerband.
Darren from Cubeking performance was there all day lending a helping hand. For more info on cubeking performance parts visit

The Dc2 just after its 4 rounds on the dyno, with a nice backdrop of r32 coupes and a Barts prized four door.
Before any dyno run all cars were checked Tyre pressures ,oil ,coolant levels and supension/chassis integrity were checked to ensure maximum performance and the highest level of safety. Next on the list was this monsterous v8 holden ute, with a detuned ls2 corvette motor putting out serious power.
Meanwhile the cars were starting to queue up outside, eager to have their own go.This simple ek with rays volk te37's and bolt in cage one of the cars just about to pull into the garage.
I spot another r32.........
Here is Michaels road going daily HCR32 rb20det sklyine, a nice example of a car thats had an aftermarket kit installed and kept lines of the car perfectly balanced
Michaels 32 was giving the dyno a skip today, the freshly rebuilt bottom end was stil having its thousand miles run in.
While Ian from Jdm garage was inspecting the ek from earlier, I managed to get a glimpse of what was under the bonnet.
The little 1.4 badged ek had a DC5 hearted K20a a 4-1 manifold and straight through exhaust wedged into and under its engine bay, and a set of neuspeed big brakes cutting it pretty close to those te37s
To the delight of the owner the K20 ran 200hp at the wheels
The French cars were out in force. This little 2.0 16v 205 GTI turbo with a massive Holset HX35 Tturbo, semi slick toyo proxes r888 tyres and a megasquirt ECU was a functionally built car that needed a bit of TLC to get it to avail of all its potential, the little 205 was only running .5bar of boost. The car still managed to pump out a whopping 232hp at the wheels!
the monster Holset HX35turbo
Some evidence of previously attached arches shows the cars battle scars.
Who can hazzard a guess as to where the wastegate is releasing?
This car is owned by Nicolas, he ran this and a turbo 1st gen MX5
The Squeaky clean 2.0 N/A 16v gti 205 owned by Cian showed up for a turn. With its over arches sparco snap off wheel, recaro buckets and immaculate red paint it showed a nice comparison between the old 205 and the newer 206
The cars kept on rolling up one after each other, there was this fully race ready rally spec mk 2 escort, with a 2.2 pinto engine with dry sump and 4 barrel Webber carbs.
Roberts completely stock K20a DC5 pulled up just after lunch , parked behind a Collins ek coupe.
I've always loved the stock brembo brakes on DC5
These two turned heads all day, Its hard to say which was more popular, the Sti rs or the b18 GSR
The ek9 wheels really set off this car and the gold badges were the little details that set off this car
The bonnet was popped to reveal the b18 breathing through the ridiculously named whale penis intake.
The Evo 5 recaros and standard wheel kept this car sweet, the A'pexi FC commander snuck into this shot.
The Red Bull girls called in to drop off a few cases, just incase everyone wasn't excited enough.
Nicolas popped off and returned with his 1st gen mx5 turbo, from its wooden nardi wheel and rota's it sat too low to run on the dyno at first.
Ian from Jdm was in his element driving this onto the lift, he is a huge fan of the 1st gen.
It was no surprise to find another Holset turbo, Nicolas was chatting to us and he said he was considering importing a pallet of these. Who knew turns out you can bulk buy turbos. The samco hoses and powdercoated rocker covers really tidied up the entire engine bay. We were chatting to Nicolas and he said the reason his 205 is in such tatters is because this '' gets all the love'' a man who truly gets what it is to be into his cars.
Finally after a long day and a spell of rain it was the turn of this lovely stock DC5
It really did look good from every angle.
everything right down to this airbox was stock.
Some how the rain made all the cars even sweeter.
As a Toyota head, this thing was one of my favourite cars, it was an absolute drivers car, it looked like it lived most of its hard life in japan with alot of genuine JDM parts. Everything from the Rays wheels the nardi wheel the bride seats defi guages. it also was hiding an s14 turbo.
I was just about to head home , when this thing rocked up and literally stopped me in my tracks. everything about was the way I like my cars. where do I start.
This beautiful eg is owned by Ronan had modest beginnings. It bought as a faded red 1.3 carb 3 years ago. It is a true rags to riches story. The owner just worked away to bring it to the level it is at today. He had only fitted with a new full kakimoto exhaust. This old school Kanjo racer looked very 90's. underneath the bonnet was the b16a2 heart.
The samco hoses, the koyorad, the 4-1 manifold, the the intake, the B pillar strut, primar coloured bay. it all set if off perfectly ! it really was a perfect end to the day.
