Jessica shook her head. “She fucked up and she fucked up big time. She probably still hates herself. Can’t punish her forever.” Jessica told him as she adjusted her jacket. She agreed with what he was saying but she had gotten to know Becca and understood her focus was on her kid. No matter how he came about, the kid was the centre of all of this and she didn’t want a kid to be punished by the sins of his parents.

That touched a nerve but, for once, that was not Emma’s intention. “I can handle my shit and I don’t let it dictate what I do and make sure it doesn’t let me succumb to anyone. I have a goal in my mind that I’m working for everyday, Darling. Do you or do you live in your shit?” Everything she saw of the other woman, Emma assumed the answer before it was given. “I offered you the chance to make me a deal. So far, I don’t know if I see any value in you to help with Essex.”

Jessica’s jaw tightened. She had a point. Jessica tried to move on from her past. Her trauma. She was always sucked back into it. Sometimes, she would take a step in what she thought was the right direction, and instead she was back in the thick of it. Her PTSD didn’t help either. “I want to live my life and stop being dragged into this superhero bullshit.” She snapped. However, she only had herself to blame. Soon as she stopped Purple Man, she started chasing what turned out to be her mother. After that, it was Sallinger. She just couldn’t seem to stop. “Yeah, well, I don’t want to pay whatever price your setting it at. Just thought that maybe you would give some sort of a shit what he was doing to people; mutants included.”

Before coming to New York Erik had ensured his people had a safe place. There was a time when he considered the Xavier mansion that but now it was overrun with teenagers and Charles’s own beliefs. Still, they were friends and what had happened with his attack, Erik had wanted to see his old friend but instead, he stood outside, a few miles outside of the mansion and still he couldn’t bring himself to it. While he outside, he saw another person waiting. “If you tell me why you are skulking outside a mutant residence, I’ll try and make your end a fast one.” 

Seeing the mutant gliding over, Jessica cursed under her breath. These mutants could be a pain in the ass sometimes and she felt severely outmatched by most. She could lift a car over her head. This one could probably lift a bridge over your head and not break a sweat. “Calm down, Magnetron or whatever they call you.” She replied as she raised her hands in surrender. “Alex Summers. Is he around here?”

   “Technically yes, he’s a child but he’s also the property of Vought International. At least the lab side of things.” Nathaniel knew he was looking like a monster but if it was for the good of science, he couldn’t care. Ryan Butcher could be a key to something beyond this time, not quite as much as Scott Summers but it was close. Jessica Jones had some amazing powers but if he could, he’d give her more and make her a supe in vought. “I was only just beginning with you, granted I can’t take full credit but I had a hand. It’s a shame we had to stop when we did.”

Jessica shook her head. “God, trying to speak to you is like a damn cliche.” She snapped. Jessica’s lips tightened as he said she was just the beginning. Were they going to try and craft her into whatever these assholes at Vought made? Maybe if they did, she wouldn’t of had the life she did. The Purple Man. Trish. All the people that were hurt and dead along the way. “I’m broken goods, doc. I’d blow myself to smithereens just to make sure you couldn’t touch my body.”

   He could remember the first time Vougelbaum came to him with the Becca Butcher problem and rightly so he was scared. Together, with the Vought legal team, they had legally taken control of the child. Ms. Butcher was in no position to sign or agree. “I have a contract that says otherwise. The child is property of Vought and by default, me.” At least he would be his doctor and have control over the welfare and care of the child.  “You haven’t given me a reason to help you nor have you offered anything in return. Who is being the asshole now?”

Jessica shook her head as she looked at him, clearly disapproving. “He is a fucking child. A person who has the right to be with his family. You are telling me a piece of paper stops you from seeing that?” Jessica spat out in anger. Why was it so hard for people like him to see that people weren’t just these things you could use and throw away? She was one of them and it sure as hell came back to bite everyone in the ass. “I already gave you enough when you mutilated my fucking body and did this to me. I think I’ve paid my dues.”

“Any telepath can be powerful. Brawn over brains. Quite and interesting statement, would you say you prefer brawn over using your mind?” It was common practise for humanity to be in that way for someone like her or like Jessica, she thought they’d think a little different. “Leaving so soon? I thought we’d be discussing some kind of deal.”

Jessica’s jaw tightened at her words. Everyone thought she was a mindless super powered asshole and part of her believed it. “Oh, screw you, Frost.” Jessica responded as she turned to face her. “You don’t know my shit and I’m sure as hell I don’t want to find out yours. I came looking for an answer and I got it.” She told her firmly before rolling her eyes. “Seems a lot of people want to make deals with me lately. The last person who offered me a deal was Essex. Want me to show you where I said I’d put his deal? I’d be more than happy to oblige.” Jessica didn’t want Emma in her head but she sure as hell hoped she would pick up on her ready to try and shove someone’s head up their own ass for testing her.

EVERYONE that let Vought do wha’ they where doin’ an’ lookin’ away willingly was just as bad as they where. “Do I look like I am?” The Britt shook his head but didn’t take his eyes off Jessica for a second. “I don’ care if they kill me. S’long as I take as many of ‘em out wit’ me then that is good enough for me.” As many of ‘em as he could but takin’ one with him in particular.

Jessica looked him up and down. “Yeah. The rough drinking cockney asshole.” It was her poor attempt of humour that she particularly didn’t care if he liked it or not. Jessica watched him as he did her before she muttered. “And what about Becca? If me and you join up, she will be the first one they will target. You know that right?” She warned. Though Jessica liked to preach to the world, if not scream at it, that she hated it and didn’t care anymore, she didn’t want to put someone in danger who didn’t deserve it. Becca just got her life back. She didn’t want to be the reason she lost it.

   The irony that Jessica Jones had spent so long trying to get the child and now he was back in the hands of his father who was more psychotic than most of the people Nathaniel had met. “Do you?” He scoffed. “Maybe you shouldn’t have taken him from my care.” The child was safer with him instead of his father. “I’ve already laid a finger on Homelander and I’ve took the right measures to ensure he knows I shouldn’t be crossed.”

Jessica scoffed as he spoke. “The kid isn’t your property. They didn’t have a choice. You don’t give anyone the fucking choice.” Jessica snapped. She certainly didn’t have the choice of being bestowed powers. They had done nothing but ruined her life. They were nothing more than an assist like a tooth paste was or shampoo. A necessary pain in the ass. “If you aren’t going to give me the answers, I will get them elsewhere. You are an egotistical asshole but you know I will.”

“Interesting…I don’t know many telepaths that powerful.” Her face remained composed except for interest in the woman in front of her. There was a lot to her and she could tell that without reading her mind. “I’m only helping the Brotherhood. If that helps them then we can talk. If not, then there really isn’t a point.”

“Wasn’t the powerful. He is dead. Brawn over brains won this time.” That was the best she could sum it up but the cat and mouse game of herself and the Purple Man was a long and extensive one but she finally won. “Great.” Jessica seemed blunt in her response as she shoved her hands in the pockets of her leather jacket. She wasn’t even going to give Emma the doubt of a deal. She was so sick of people trying to get shit out of her when she just wanted to sort an issue out. “I meant what I said. Stay out of my head.” She called out to her.

It was rare that anyone felt her in their mind but everytime it happened, she’d be surprised. “Xavier or someone else?” she asked as she stared down at Jessica and fixing her jacket. “I met him a few days ago. If you don’t give a shit about anyone, what makes him so special to you?”

Jessica turned away when she asked. “Someone else. I snapped his neck for doing what he did. I’d do it to anyone who thinks they can do it again.” She said, putting that warning out there. Emma seemed to be a little more...liberal with how her powers are used. “I don’t. He has done some shit to me. To people I know. I wanna find them. You gonna help or not?” She didn’t want to waste her time if Emma was just going to mess her about.

   “I think I have a lot of what you want, so yes.” All people who pretended to be heroes had that one weakness and that was the burden of humanity. Nathaniel had witnessed it in people like Darwin would could have achieved so much but let his own beliefs limit him. He was not like that in any sense of the word. “You and I both know when there are helpless children involved then it becomes more than a job for you.” 

“Trust me, if it isn’t you, it would be someone else.” Jessica told him. Just another asshole to fill the shoes of one she got rid off. The world was never short of them. At his words, Jessica held his gaze. “Homelander is with the kid. You think you can get past him? The guy wants me dead because I annoy him. Imagine what he would try to do to you if you lay a finger on him?” She didn’t like gambling with lives but it was her only play.

Emma looked into the PIs mind and could see something about a friend that was locked away and so many other things that almost gave her a headache. “Don’t you? They’re so busy running around after so many meaningless things.” She shook her head at them, looking down as if they’re worthless. “Give me a name and I’ll tell you.”

Jessica felt a little itch in her head that was a little too close for comfort. One that reminded her of him. She instinctively grabbed Emma by her jacket and tugged her harshly. “I have experience of knowing when someone is in my head. Stay the fuck out of it.” She hissed. Psychics were a touchy subject but who wouldn’t be after being controlled as long as she was? She let her go. “I don’t give a shit about anyone.” She stated before she paused before speaking. “Nathaniel Essex. You know him?”

Turning to face Jessica Jones, Emma looked her over trying to see if the mind matched the appearance. “I find it pathetic not beautiful.” So many people with so many bland and irrelevant problems when the world was burning around them, promising the changing of tides. “What do you want Jessica Jones?” Her hand didn’t move to meet Jessica.

Jessica chuckled with a dry tone under her breath. “Of course you do.” She couldn’t really be surprised. She was a woman that radiated pretentiousness and snobbish behaviour. Jessica was perhaps her total opposite. She let her hand fall to her side. “Wanted to ask about someone you might know. You seem to be a know it all. Was hoping it would extend to someone I know.”

BILLY made a face. “Tha’ aint’ no reason. You think I got powers? I don’t. I didn’t have no fancy job before all this and I didn’t come from anythin’ like it either. We both know you ain’t just a PI os you can’t use that for lettin’ Vought an’ the supes get away with all they do. I don’t care if it eats me up.” If he had to die for it, then he would. “I hate Vought an’ their supes. Specifics count.”

Jessica looked away as he called her out. She really just wished she could be a PI but she just couldn’t help do things. Trish always saw the best in her but there was no more Trish. No more good side or so she thought. Saving the kid lit something in her again but she didn’t know if she could face it. “I’m not wearing a fricken costume.” She pointed out. “They’ll kill us both. You know that, right?”

  The work that Nathaniel had contributed to Jessica Jones was only the tip of the iceberg. She was incomplete for now and maybe she could have been Vought’s next project but she would never agree to it. “Shall we have a trade?” He asked. “I can continue my work on you without any interruptions and maybe I’ll leave little Homelander Jr alone.” If Nathaniel had learned anything from observing Ms. Jones it was that she couldn’t help herself when someone helpless was involved. It was almost heroic. “I would love to see you try and touch me, you’ll regret it the instant you do.”

Jessica raised an eyebrow. “You really think you can strike a deal with me?” She asked. At his offer, her lips made thin lines. He had her there and she knew it. Still, she would call the bluff because that is what she did. “The kid was a job. I got paid. I’m not hired security. I washed my hands from them soon as I did what I was paid for.” She stated, wanting to see his response. “Oh, I don’t give a shit. I’ll give you something to remember me by.”

The city was beautiful. So much chaos surrounding it and so many that didn’t even know it. Mutants, supes, superhumans all around and then there was the bottom of them all. Humans. So average and weak. Nothing compared to her and others like her. “Look at them. All of them worried about meaningless things.” She could hear all of their thoughts. “What to get for Christmas,will they make the subway on time and other boring things not even worth the thought they formed. How do they stand it?”

“Yeah, that is real beautiful.” Jessica responded bluntly. Emma Frost, exactly where she presumed she would be. Emma was famed for many things and, in the flesh, she lived up to them. “You don’t know me but if rumours are true, you probably know me already down to what kind of toilet paper I use.” Jessica offered her a hand to shake. “Jessica Jones.”

   It would have been a lie if Nathaniel had said he didn’t imagine the various ways he would cause Ms. Jones any sort of pain. She had taken one of his most valuable assets away in the form of Becca Butcher’s son and humiliated him, made him feel weak. Nathaniel hadn’t felt that way in such a long time.  “Oh I have a few projects Ms. Jones, perhaps you will see them one day.” He spoke with a sinister smile, dropping every pretense he had conjured up while he was around her. “I have the names, results and notes but they are none of your concern. You had your choice of my projects and you chose to help someone else so you reap what you sow.”

Jessica scoffed as he mentioned about showing her the projects he had up his sleeve. “Let me know when. I’ll make sure to rain check you.” She responded soon as he finished his sentence. Jessica frowned as his expression changed but she didn’t back down. Being smart was not her strongest suit or so she thought. “He was a kid. Not somebody’s fucking property. I’d do it again. The only thing I’d do differently is take that head of yours and shove it up your ass.” She snapped before she clenched her fists. “You use people and throw them away. You don’t give a shit so why would it matter if I know who they are?”
