In his new home, a surprise onset of Pon Farr leads to an encounter with a Wold Newton descendant - Violet Rutherford, a progressive English adventuress with eclectic interests and friends. Their relationship stretches the Prime Directive to the breaking point and leads to the birth of both Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes.  It could explain so much!

Korean TV or movie recs?

Any Korean TV shows or movies that you highly recommend right now? I'm headed to Korea in a few weeks and watching something helps get my spoken Korean back up to speed. For guidance on my taste, the two shows I adored in the past year were Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Reborn Rich. I liked the quality of the writing and acting. I'm not so big on horror or competition shows.

Thank you to @emmagrant01 for finding these photos of the time I borrowed a sewing machine from a figure skater's mom (all skaters' moms own sewing machines) in Las Vegas and whipped up upholstery for the Potterlock Lounge at Leviosa according to @foxestacado's vision, using fabric she bought in L.A.'s garment district. Fox and Emma each brought an inflatable sofa, I sewed the sofa wraps and made sofa pillowcases (temporarily borrowing hotel room pillows), we had @dixiebell's hand-stenciled wallpaper backdrop, we made a crime scene fireplace, and Fox somehow singlehandedly created entire living room fixtures out of a shipment of cardboard recycling that Qui diverted to our hotel.

I can't remember why we did this? We thought it would be a good idea? So much fun.

Look at my beautiful friend. He's supposed to still be here. Every other time I went a couple of years without seeing him, I got to see him again and catch up. I can't do that anymore so I am just trying to show other people: look at my friend. Look at how beautiful and gifted he was.

Back in the early 1990s, the college where I'd gotten my BA asked if I would make a quilt for the English department. Dug up this photo today from when they framed and hung the quilt. I'm told it's still there.

Goncharov Lore Thus Far, based on the top tumblr post results

Main cast are Goncharov himself, his wife Katya (née Michailov), and Andrey 

One side character is named Mario Ambrosini. He is described as a “sad boi” and is involved in gambling. 

Set in Naples and involving a drug ring/mafia. The plot seems to involve Russian organized crime attempting to get a foothold in Italy. 

There is a Boat Scene. Katya survives via resourcefulness. 

Andrey and Goncharov have a substantial amount of homoeroticism. Andrey also has an internet in Katya. This forms a true love triangle. 

At some point, Katya threatens to shoot Goncharov. This is framed as a Girlboss Moment. 

There is also a Beer Bottle Scene. 

Katya fakes her death.

heavy clock symbolism. A pivotal scene occurs at a clock tower, there is a grandfather clock in the background of some sets, etc 

A supporting female character named Sofia makes an appearance, wearing a cocktail dress. Katya protects her at some point. They’re both in the Boat Scene. At one point they buy fruit together in a marketplace. This is lesbian shipping fuel. 

The villain, likely Mario, has a sidekick named Icepick Joe. Joe commits a final act of heroism before being left for dead— after being killed by an Icepick. Perhaps he turned against Mario and was killed in retaliation?

Goncharov, played by DeNiro, has a very distinctive manner of walking. 

Katya’s brother, Valery, makes an appearance.

from posts I’ve witnessed (only mentioning things I’ve seen >5 blogs post about) - there is an Anchovies scene, and fish symbolism also plays a heavy role. at some point Katya is seen near a fish bowl full of goldfish, and this is important to the Boat Scene as well. - Goncharov and Andrey have homoerotic tension, and this is used to further statements about the cycle of repression and violence

The story involves Goncharov losing himself in a downward spiral. It is a tragedy of unbecoming.

There’s a Bridge Scene. This is the one with the clocktower chiming in the background.

There’s a scene involving a tank of anchovies. 

Icepick Joe has a traumatic backstory 

Katya betrays Goncharov AND Sofia. She’s well-intentioned, but it all comes crashing down, ending in her losing them both— losing Sofia emotionally and inadvertently causing Goncharov’s death

There’s a shootout in Pompeii in which Mario destroys historically significant architecture. This is representative of the destructive nature of nationalism.

One of the tiniest but greatest triumphs of my marriage came about because of Alice's Restaurant. I grew up in Korea and didn't know about this song until college, but gathered that it's a beloved Thanksgiving tradition to play this war protest song that was instigated by an ill-fated trip to a garbage dump that was closed for Thanksgiving.

One Thanksgiving, thoroughly American husband was musing that maybe he would use his time off work to drive some large broken appliances to the dump. I said, "If it's open." He replied, "Why wouldn't it be open?"

I looked at him suspiciously, but he wasn't being funny. He wasn't setting me up for a punchline. He was asking in genuine innocence.

I could not believe this was happening to me. With a feeling like the sun bursting through clouds, and probably an incredulous and thrilled look on my face, I started humming the chorus of Alice's Restaurant.

Husband gave me full marks for that one. Ah, this memory is like a precious jewel.
