PUTTING THIS NOTE BACK AGAIN (after i had just taken down my last pinned freak-out sigh)
For what it's worth, you can find me as XCZIEL almost everywhere: bluesky, discord, dreamwidth, pillowfort, twitter i never use... [now deleted]i even still have my livejournal (i am not, however, on insta or the ticking tok site)
feel free to message me if you'd like to keep in touch should tumblr continue it's current trajectory (exploding car. hammers everywhere.)

There are currently SO MANY fandoms going on in this space:
OKAY definitely a BTS (as of like May 2023, so ... yeah) and kpop hyperfixation currently ongoing, not sure when normal service will resume
ALSO i have decided to just go ahead and let myself post about random new books that are hitting the shelves in US stores - not reviewing or recommending, just passing on a heads-up because ... idk. For me it's equivalent to: "oh look cool rock!" or "guess what happened on My Show!" but it's "here's what just showed up on the shelves! " *jazz hands*
ok the kpop Thing officially "Begin"s with OnlyOneOf (watch their mv and dance practices you will not regret it)

Anyways, this blog is a mishmash of those, current events posts, cat and landscape pics, tumblr standard posts, fic recs, and memes.
I subscribe to the "if you like it, reblog it" philosophy of sharing creators' posts, because they put the effort in and deserve some appreciation.
Welcome!

He was sure there were many whom he offended by refusing to acknowledge the grief he did not in fact feel, but the dishonesty would be an insult to himself, to the dead whom he had not loved, and to his mother, for whom he had not been allowed to wear mourning after the funeral because Setheris considered it unseemly.
I think this is the most evil thing we learn about Setheris. I think this is worse than all the violence.
yknow... this (and other similar details) is actually a really big part of setheris as a character and as a... villain? it might be giving him too much credit to call him that but yknow. as a character the audience isn't supposed to like. the violent scenes are more visceral and memorable but the crux of setheris's abuse isn't just that he hits maia, its the way he's controlling and spiteful at every turn. these moments are why maia can so confidently tell hesero none of how he was treated was setheris's idea of discipline. it was setheris's idea of causing misery
#yknow. controlling what maia can and can't say and wear#how he could express himself#aggressively tamping down anything he found annoying or even just any bit of personality#he's just. so controlling and vindictive#in a realistic way he's not just Evil Because The Plot Says So he's lashing out because he's miserable and feels out of control#this is a real kind of guy for sure they suck just as bad irl#the goblin emperor
@paradoxspaceheater I just had to preserve your tags!
This is absolutely such a key thing, that I have been struggling to articulate about how the characters, especially the antagonists in Goblin Emperor they ARE A REAL TYPE OF GUY!
I would even say that this is also the reason he keeps being high handed with Maia when Maia is literally the Emperor and the Nohecherei are right there! Because he's been lashing out at Maia to deal with feeling out of control for a decade and even though the situation has changed he doesn't have a better coping mechanism to fall back on anymore (if he ever did).
And conversely of course Hesero, who knew him as a successful lawyer (he had to have been doing pretty well to be competing with Chavar in the first place), hasn't seen that behaviour. He wasn't using it at the time, he didn't need to.
When I suggest people go to the doctor for something a lot of them seem to assume I donât know what itâs like to have doctors that donât listen to you. Yeah I do actually. I still think you should go to the doctor.

Ankara court overturns results of leadership election won by Republican People's Party head Ozgur Ozel.
(paraphrasing from the above)
A court in Turkiye has annulled the 2023 leadership election of the main opposition Republican Peopleâs Party (CHP) ĂzgĂŒr Ăzel
CHP is the oldest political faction that won over ErdoÄan's AKP in the 2024 local elections
The ruling this past Thursday overturned the result of a leadership election of current party head ĂzgĂŒr Ăzel with the court naming the partyâs former chair the interim leader, Kemal KılıçdaroÄluâ the loser of that election.

following this, police stormed CHP headquarters and forced out party members

(paraphrasing from the above)
"The Republican People's Party will from now be on the streets or in the squares," ĂzgĂŒr said after being forced out of the building
An appeal against the ousting could take a year for a ruling

this lead to a march directly to parliament yesterday, here is some footage of both the CHP headquarters that had been smashed up by police, some of the people on the streets, many of whom joined when they heard that Ăzel was walking to parliament, and footage of him climbing a police water canon vehicle to prevent it from targeting the crowd and to adress everyone
it rained most of the day they marched, from his twitter account:
"BugĂŒn bir milattır. BugĂŒnĂŒn öncesi vardır. Sonrası olacaktırâŠ"
[Today is a milestone. There's has been before today. There will be after...]
(translation mine)
in this video of him on the water canon police vehicle he is leading people in chanting "Open! Open! Open the barricade!"
here is Ăzel tearing up a notice about it handed to him, he says "'Bunun İçin Yıktılar Baba OcaÄını!"
[This is why they demolished your father's house]

there are videos of Ăzel's political speeches from yesterday, and social media edits on his twitter, and other specific things in reporting.
but i wanted to share the part of the news where a huge crowd took to the streets because between the ousting of political opposition and the (currently failed) closing of a university, and the targeted attempts to remove academic qualifications to disqualify competition and the imprisoning of entertainers and journalists and so much more, while struggling with cost of living- every time i hear about the people taking to the streets anyway after all of that? I do actually want to share it.
Ozgur Ozel hopes to launch new main opposition after court removed him as leader of the CHP.
extremely normal times when the foundational political party of the country is about to fracture into a whole new opposition due to the ousting of anyone the president does not like
A 50-kilogram anvil floats perfectly on the surface of mercury, because the density of the steel from which it is made is almost half the density of mercury.
Fun fact! Many lighthouses with especially large fresnel lenses would have huge fucking tubs of liquid mercury in the lantern room because itâs a super easy way to make these giant lenses rotate quickly!
Shockingly, however, spending most of your time in close proximity to 500 pounds of liquid mercury is Not Great For Oneâs Health and tons of lighthouse keepers started to go crazy from the whole. Mercury poisoning thing. Hence why there are a lot of âhauntedâ lighthouses or wickies that lose it and maybe do a bit of manslaughter.
Anyway, people saw a bunch of lighthouse keepers go crazy and get sick and got empirical evidence that it was in fact related to the 500 pound mercury bath they have to visit every day and then they decided nah itâs fine actually. So weâve kept the liquid mercury thing and I think thatâs beautiful
I love how it is so dense it does not "wet" the anvil, the drops all run and leave with nothing behind them unlike water, oil, sauce... it's super satisfying it's like in cartoons
In a letter written on April 19, 1825, Augustin Fresnel proposed the use of mercury to reduce the friction in revolving lenses. His statement follows: âI propose to float our rotating devices, of the first order, in a bath of mercury, instead of placing them on rollers. This project won't present many difficulties; nevertheless, as I have not put it into execution, I won't require you to adopt it for your first lighthouse.â
Fresnelâs plan for mercury flotation was not put into practice until 1890 when Monsieur Leon Bourdelles, Chief Engineer of the French Lighthouse Service, designed and built a workable mercury flotation system. The mercury bath allowed the lens to operate in an almost frictionless environment and, additionally, allowed the speed of rotation to be dramatically increased.
Lens Rotation by Thomas Tag | United States Lighthouse Society
Under less-than-ideal conditions, you can only see the beam when itâs pointed more or less directly at you. In-between beams you would not be able to see anything. One solution to this was to create multiple beams, and the lenses Mr Fresnel designed usually created 8 beams. But, even still, duration between flashes could be as long as one minute in the old mechanical roller systems.
The nearly frictionless operation of the Mercury suspension system allowed the lenses (large pieces of precisely ground glass weighing several hundred pounds in some cases) to rotate fast enough that they could be redesigned to create fewer (usually 3) beams. Fewer beams from a similar light source will be proportionally brighter, and the gains in speed were sufficient that duration between flashes could still be reduced to as little as 10 seconds.
This was a big upgrade. It didnât just make the lighthouse signal faster, it allowed them to completely overhaul the lens and derive more visibility from a light source.
Whatâs a little Madness, in the face of Progress?
hello EDS people. calling all EDS people. especially if you live in Victoria, Australia like me.
what is the process of evaluation like? what kinds of tests do they do?
I have been informed that I should discuss this with my GP and get a referral to a rheumatologist(?). I have been ignoring this possibility for years but given that I had an actual nurse informally assess me and on the basis of that tell me that I should get it formally assessed, I'm actually thinking of getting the process started with the assumption that it will take a long time.
also, not to be flippant, but what's the point? what will I gain by getting my fun joints assessed? why should I care?
and yes, while I was told to ask specifically about EDS, I do not have enough information currently to know either whether I would genuinely meet criteria for any kind of hypermobility, or whether Ehlers-Danlos is even the kind of hypermobility that would be relevant.
@thebibliosphere i think from memory you have EDS? sorry for the ping but I just want to be faintly prepared before I go to my GP next week.
funny fact: it was actually a crisis assessment team psych nurse who was doing a holistic initial assessment and when I mentioned both ASD and potential POTS immediately asked whether I was bendy or not, then asked me to demonstrate specific joints. she seemed more interested in my bendiness than the "psychotic symptoms"... which were the actual reason I'd been referred to the CATT in the first place after coming out of the psych ward a few days earlier. I find this amusing. anyway.
I canât tell you what the process of evaluation will be like for the area youâre asking about, but to address your âwhatâs the point?â point:
Ehlers Danlos Syndromeâand many other connective tissue disordersâ affect Every facet of your health. From dental care to vascular health, to which antibiotics are safe for your tendon health, to straight up needing different types of sutures, anesthesia, and recovery care after surgery.
And that doesnât even begin to cover comorbidities like POTS, MCAS, fibro, etc and general quality of life.
Itâs also important to determine which type of EDS you might have because it can help with preventative care for your future based on the specific subtype. There are some very specific health complications that can occur and knowing if you have EDS can help you take preventative steps, but also hopefully ensure you get the care you need more quickly in the event something does go wrong.
I have hEDS and while my joints are garbage, itâs my immune system thatâs more heavily impacted, as well as my internal organs which have tried more than once to become external of their own volition. I also had my Achilles tendon rupture spontaneously after being given an antibiotic (ciprofloxacin), which can affect connective tissue, even in people without Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.
To put it bluntly: itâs not just your joints, itâs all of you. And all of you deserves care â€ïž
thank you! I will bring it up with my GP next wednesday for sure then. everybody cross fingers and toes for me (but gently. please do not overextend.)
also, in the process, should I specifically mention that my dad is Highly Suspect also for various of these things and I am casting an eye at him too? my GP is also dad's, and I've told dad before that there are certain things he should bring up to the doctor (e.g. his funky reaction to local anaesthetics that mean he's happier to go without than to have to suffer the weeks of agony that follow an anaesthetic that doesn't even help him), but he always just goes 'oh well' about them because he doesn't care enough about certain aspects of his health that he has decided do not matter. I'm assuming family history of flexibility is at least moderately important to mention, but none of us have a diagnosis of anything that I'm aware of. ...maybe I drop that on the family chat just to double-check my bendy sister hasn't snuck off and got her a diagnosis of something though.
I would yes. Amusingly, my diagnosis led to my mother getting a âthis is very likely what is wrong with youâ comment from a plastic surgeon following her double mastectomy, when her wounds just refused to heal.
I was on the phone to my dad during the doctor rounds while they were talking about wound care and I was trying to be like, âhey did anyone tell them I just got diagnosed with EDS.â
And suddenly I could tell the plastic surgeon had crossed the room because his voice, which had been much further away, was suddenly right there and he said, âsay that again.â And I explained Iâd been diagnosed with hEDS a few months before and you could hear the unspoken âson of a bitch!â In his voice, because if heâd known there was a history of EDS in the family, he would have done her surgery differently to accommodate her wound care needs.
So, yeah. Bring up family even if theyâre unwilling or unable to get a diagnosis. My mother constantly having premature babies in the third trimester was apparently an indicator of connective tissue issues not being supported that to this very day she still blames on herself for drinking too much caffeine.
Another design is using 2 20x25x1 filters, taping them to the sides of the box fan and then to each other so they sort of make a triangle, then cutting cardboard to make a top and bottom to the triangle.
This was discovered as a more effective design during the 2020 US west coast fires.
Iâve personally used both the flat single-filter version AND the triangular two-filter version, and based on subjective personal experience I would argue that the benefits from the second filter, both in terms of airflow and filtration, are absolutely worth it. If you need a makeshift air filter and you have two filters to work with, build the triangle (if not the box, i have no idea how good that one works but based on the info here i presume itâs a fair bit better.)
We literally built one this morning because the air quality had gotten so bad from all the wildfire smoke coming in from Canada (and we live closer to NYC ffs). I was so sick when I woke up this morning and my eyes were red and irritated and itchy. My mouth and throat felt constantly dry despite being properly hydrated. I was constantly sneezing.
Our cube has only been running for about five hours. My mouth no longer feels dry. My eyes are mostly back to normal. Sneezing has been greatly reduced. Iâm still sick and that might take a while, but this is a HUGE improvement. The whole cube costs less than $100 to make and that included getting the materials delivered through Door Dash.
Build yourself a cube or whatever variation is necessary for your budget/living space. It will make a difference, I promise.
