Tequila in India has travelled a long road—from being downed in salt-and-lime shots at college parties to now being swirled in crystal glasses at luxury bars. Sales have tripled in the past five years, bartenders are crafting inventive cocktails, and global brands are lining up for launches. What was once dismissed as a party spirit is fast becoming India’s next sipping obsession. I still remember my first visit to Mexico in 2016. Back then, many Indians believed mezcal meant a smoky drink with a worm floating inside the bottle. It has taken almost a decade of education, writing, and global bar trends seeping in for that perception to change. Today, tequila has found a more respectful place in India’s drinking culture. The numbers back it up. According to the IWSR, tequila was the second-fastest growing spirit in India in 2023, with consumption up nearly 80% year-on-year. Exports of tequila from Mexico to India have risen by more than 600% over the past decade, says the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). And that growth is not slowing.
