The fact that literal medicine is growing in our backyards and they’re classified as “weeds” annoys me so fucking much.

See this “weed”?

That’s Cuban Jute and it can be used to treat:

Fevers

Digestion issues

Headaches

Boils

Pimples

Rheumatism

Toothaches

Like whole ass MEDICINE!!! And I’m supposed to just mow it down😭

I think you make a very valuable point about how “weed” is an unhelpful category and how common plants need more attention paid to them, but horse nettle is toxic, so PLEASE be careful!

Additionally, many roadside plants that you wild forage can be contaminated with lead, bacteria, and other nasty things from air pollution settling in the soil, illegal dumping, wildlife/pet waste, etc.

OP makes a really strong point, and we overlook a lot of edible and medicinal plants because of a lot of insidious racism/classism (ask me for a rant about dandelions some time), please always fully do your research before you forage!
