Thanks for the support! Unfortunately, there's no good answer for how I decide anything. I usually just wing it, from sketch to final product, adding and adjusting things as I see fit. There are "rules" like all the dots and the echoed line art behind the subject, but most things, including the origin of those examples, are just decided by if I like it or not.
