Queer Movie Review #36: Drive Away Dolls

I heard about Drive Away Dolls on Tumblr, but didn't get around to watching it until I was stuck on a trans-atlantic flight from London to Seattle. I've heard of the Cohen Brothers, but I don't think I've seen any of their work before this one. To be fair, only Ethan Cohen and his lesbian wife Tricia Cooke are involved in this one (and yes you read that right. Their words, not mine.) I wasn't sure what to expect, other than some laughs and maybe some thrills. I was blown away. Grab your popcorn, and your tissues (from laughing so hard you cry), as Drive Away Dolls will take you on a RIDE.

Drive Away Dolls tells the story of best friends Jaime (Margaret Qualley), and Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) on a road trip that quickly goes awry. The rental car they picked up has some very important, and illicit smuggled goods, and if it doesn't get picked up by the right people at the right time, heads will roll. Jaime is irrevant and carefree, but so genuine it makes your teeth hurt. Marian is no-nonsense, straight-laced (well, perhaps straight isn't the right word here), and guarded to a fault. But in order to disintangle themselves from these shady figures, they'll need to work together.

The Cohen Brothers are a known entity, but not by me personally. Now having seen work by one-half of them, I think I understand the reputation. Drive Away Dolls is a TRIP, both literally and figuratively. (And I watched it on a trip, heh.) I didn't see one slow moment--the film gains momentum as it goes. And the dialogue has...a distinct quality to it--especially Jaime's. Also, of course the raunchy humor, which in my opinion only added to the story, rather than distracting from it.

Drive Away Dolls is probably one of the queerest films I've watched. There's the dildo jokes, the softball team circle snog...and of course--the requisit will-they-won't-they with our main characters. Whereas some films hint at queerness, this one hits you over the head with it. Even better, it's not another coming-out story. It's just be gay, do crime, or rather, get caught up in crime despite your best intentions, and try to get out alive.

Speaking of TROPES, well. There's another one here, but I don't want to spoil things for you. You'll just have to watch it. And yes, I highly recommend this film, but maaaybe don't watch it with your mom.
