My first essay crisis 🙃

Tonight, I did my first all-nighter, frantically trying to finish an essay before an 8am deadline. It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t fun. I’m tired and look like shit. I’ve eaten loads of junk food to get me through the day. Made jokes about it to my friends, pretended it was all just a part of the experience.

Today, I watched my fellow freshers cope with their stress as it started to manifest itself more throughout the day. I watched as we all burst into a kind of hypnotic laughter at tiny, inconsequential things. I saw one of my closest friends here burst into tears because there was no option she liked at lunch.

I should have managed my time better. I should have drank more coffee, been more enthusiastic, gotten up earlier. Maybe I wouldn’t be in this position now.

But I’m human, and it’s really hard here sometimes. I’m not saying that it won’t all be worth it... that the good times won’t cancel out the bad a hundred times over. I’ve learned over the years that I thrive on stress and pressure, but for someone else who's not like me - I honestly worry that what I’ve been through recently could have been extremely difficult.

Today has been a hard day, but I’ve learnt important things.

Life update!!

Well I’m here in Oxford, and I’m two-and-a-bit weeks into my first term! Freshers' Week was a blast, I made lots of friends, drank much more alcohol than I should have, and tried a lot of new things.

It’s time to get serious now, so expect more academic posts. I’ve been getting out and seeing more of Oxford outside my college, including some gorgeous libraries, so will be sharing some photos and inspiration with you all soon.

Okay of course I’m happy that Malala got accepted to Oxford, but I really want to know more! What did she write for her personal essay- “Just google me bitches”? Did she have to do an interview and if so did she just plonk her nobel peace prize down on the table? Did her student counselor advise her to apply to other crappier places just in case she wasn’t accepted? Was there anyone who actually turned down freaking Malala Yousafzai, I need to know!!

Malala had to take the Oxford entrance exam, sit the interviews (half an hour of academic debate/ grilling with an Oxford tutor) and get 3 As in her A levels. So I’m sure the Nobel prize and her general amazingness helped, but she also had to meet the same high academic standards as any other applicant!

i.d.g.a.f: goes to school unbothered, doesn’t give a shit about makeup or looking nice, constantly has a water bottle filled, when they’re not taking notes they’re sleeping in class, goes home and actually studies/does homework, bottles up emotions, wants to travel

covfefe: lives their life on coffee and tea, always participates in class discussions, likes to observe, challenges themselves sometimes a little too much, needs more sleep, always trying to make plans to fill up their schedule, likes aesthetics

netflix & procrastinate: honestly wants to do well, gets distracted easily, when they’re focused they get shit done, pulls lots of all nighters, tells everyone ‘im fine’ when not fine, accidentally skips breakfast, loves their friends, gets anxiety over tests and quizzes

pastel: is always organized, loves to journal, actually listens to the teacher, people think they’re always super sweet, wants to visit japan, loves animals, does research for fun, looks over work 948208 times before turning it in, watches horror movies and then regrets it

complaint department: acts like they didn’t have enough time to do homework (they did), blames others for their problems, doesn’t study then cry when they get a bad grade, secretly is very insecure, is always out “sick”, acts better than others for no reason sometimes

chilly child: is very relaxed but knows how to work, is nice to their teachers, tries to avoid half-assing things, loves autumn, likes studying with other people, is very self motivating, tries not to focus on the letter grade but rather how hard they worked, and tbh they’re just tryna enjoy life,
