Lost in their kiss Ryan hadn’t noticed he’s been shot until Kate ran away from him. “Cheater!” Ryan stated sprinting after her but changed his mind and ducked behind a wall. “Game on.”
Kate shouted behind her. “You’re an ex cop, I need all the cheats I can get.” She ran ahead and started climbing into a hiding spot.

“What’d I do to deserve a guy like you?” She leaned over and pecked him on the lips, shooting him as she pulled away and making a run for it.

“Ryan. Do you hear yourself?” She stepped closer to him and rested her hand on his cheek. Her fingers trailed up the side of his shaved head. “This is you. Under all the magic, this is you. And I’m worried about that. If you need to take a break from the business, we’ll be fine. You look like you have two black eyes, your bag are so deep.”
“We are partners, Ryan. You need to trust me and tell me when you’re getting overwhelmed.”

Kate watched him for a moment, frowning while looking away. “Daughter in law?”

“I said bad because it explains the batch. I can’t say the batch was different. No matter what Ryan came out perfect.“
“Ryan grew up around this stuff, I’m sure the excitement has waned for him. I’m a chemist,” Kate gestured to the bubbling mixture in the cauldron. “This is just way cooler chemistry.”
“I agree.”

“I know you wouldn’t.” Her hand came up to rub along his arm.
“I’m not worried about that. I’m fine enough for the both of us, I just want to be kind of clued in next time you do something mortal people think is drastic.”

“You didn’t think I should have been informed of this?”

“I wouldn’t leave you here, Kate.“ Ryan smiled, fixing a few strands of hair that was out of place.
“I know you wouldn’t.” Her smile shrunk and she kind of zoned out for a few minutes, her hand playing absentmindedly with the one still holding hers.
“When I was 6, I broke my arm at summer camp. It took my parents like 4 hours to get to the ER down there. Then they spent the next three hours threatening to sue the camp over it, while the nurses played with me.” It was like she woke up after she said that and gave a nervous laugh. “I don’t know why I told you that.”
