     A small smile spread over Ryu’s face, following a small look of surprise at what his twin had said. It wasn’t oftent hat the boy heard such things from his sibling, but.. he had to remember that he was different than he used to be. He wasn’t like he was before. One moment of weakness... it was a moment of vulnerability... that didn’t have to be a moment of vulnerability anymore. He knew that much. He was going to be trying his best to remember that--he just needed the reminder. 

     “Thanks, Riku.”

     Escape had been on his mind for a long time. He’d only been running a couple of days, but... His master was dead and unfortunately... that meant collectors that had wanted him after his master had passed on. He'd been told how good he had it, how he was living in the lap of luxury while with his master. Though he'd known that his master, being as he was... was trade poorly due to his 'lack of power'. It was far from the truth. As much as the elf hated to admit it... The man was a gifted mage, one that not many seemed to notice... but he was important enough to need a guard. 

     And that was what Riku did--he guarded the man. He had no gift of magic himself, but he was a formidable warrior in his clan. And now he was on the run. He was, to them, property that needed collected. And he refused to allow himself to be captured again. So he ran, made it to the western approach in Orlais.

     Now he moved quickly, as fast as his legs could carry him. He would not allow them to capture him, he wanted to find his people. Or, perhaps, find a way to make a life for himself elsewhere. The male's sword remained on his back, where he could run easier unless the need to fight was too great. He found his way into a maze of ruins, hiding around a dark crevice while he waited for the sounds of footsteps to get further away and tried to catch his breath. Once he was capable of breathing, he moved cautiously across the way, moving slowly in case any of them stayed behind.

     Bare feet lightly step with care, turning every way needed so he wouldn't miss out on details.. but he was only one escaped Elf. While formidable in battle, he still was able to be overwhelmed. At one turn he took, there was immediate movement and his hand flew up to his sword... until he realized... this was another elf.. he then hesitated. "Who are you?"

It was happening again. It seemed as if every time Riku went an extended period with out seeing his twin, the doubt would start to creep back in again. It’s been literal years. But to him, it didn’t matter how long it’s been. It doesn’t change the fact that he turned his back on both his best friend Sora, and his brother.

He doesn’t know how Ryu can just… Forgive him for the things he’s done. Sure, he admitted he was wrong. Did everything he could to make things right. Hell, he even became keyblade master. But, that doesn’t save Riku from the pang of guilt he feels any time he locks eyes with his twin.

This time was no different. It had been at least a month since he last saw Ryu. Now they were going on a mission together. As he approached the gummi ship, his brother was there waiting for him. Wearing the smile on his face that showed the clear difference between them. He eventually locked eyes with him, and in his mind he flashes back to the when they fought each other on Hollow Bastion.

He lets out a heavy sigh as he can feel the guilt bore a hole into his heart and averts his gaze away from the other boy. When he makes his way up to him, he wraps his arms around him and holds him close. Despite the pain he feels, he loves his twin dearly, and missed him terribly. It just baffles his mind how the identical boy in his arms can feel the same about him.

“I… Hate being away from you.” He said with a tiredness only his twin would be able to pick up on. “So… How have you been?”

     How long had it been? Well, all he knew was it had been roughly a month. Sea glass eyes had been combing over the gummi ship, looking over everything that he needed to be sure it was ship shape. He didn’t know how long this mission with the twin would be.. or how long he would need to make sure both of their backs were being watched. Missions sent the male on edge from time to time. 

     It took him about an hour to do last minute checkovers before he just moved to settle against the entrance. All that was left was to wait for the other twin, a smile clear on his face when he saw him. Despite their.. obvious differences... they were still family. That was all that mattered in the long run. 

     The last time he saw his brother, they had fought, yeah, but that was water under the bridge, yeah? Least--it was to him. People sometimes fought. They got mad at one another. It was just how things were. He could, at the end of the day, forgive and forget.. though the second part would be somewhat easier said than done. Fights could also just... be things that families did sometimes and that was okay. 

     But he saw that look on Riku’s face when he approached, those eyes blinking before brows raise some, his own expression shifting only momentarily before  his brother pulled him into a tight hug. He was trying hard to be better, Ryu knew this. And every step counted.. if it didn’t then well... what the hell was the point of trying to take a step in the first place? He returned the hug after a split second of his own thoughts, giving him time to listen to his sibling speak before he would respond. But he did pick up on that exhaustion rather quickly. 

     “The feeling’s mutual..” He began, shifting some before he would respond further. “I’ve been alright, trying to stay out of everyone else’s hair but y’know.. doing the best I can. Y’sure you won’t need a nap before we head out?”

CAN I JUS TADD Sora originally viewed the Mark of Mastery exam as just a formality, that he had already proven himself worthy

but it was seeing Riku’s wavering confidence in himself and questioning of whether or not he was deserving of wielding the Keyblade due to the lingering darkness in his own heart that made Sora go “count me in” without a second thought

he went through with it because he wanted to show Riku that he was worthy, that he could do it aND HE DOES HE PASSES HE BECOMES A MASTER AND SORA IS GENUINELY HAPPY FOR HIM LIKE “I TOLD YOU, MAN!” AND AHhhh
