He didn’t even remotely mind or honestly notice that she was in sweatpants and that maybe the house wasn’t as clean as it could be, if there was one thing Clint understood, it was grief. “I was feeling a bit lonely so I thought I would drop in and bug you for an afternoon.”

It wasn’t anything really important. Besides you look like you have your hands full, he isn’t working ya to the bone or anything is he?”

“ what would you say if I told you I do it for attention, mostly? ”  she’s not sure why it happens, actually, and she’s not even fully sure how, all that matters is that it does. for whatever reason, it happens and she gets to see the people most important to her. not matt, yet, but she’s sure he’ll turn up eventually, the way steve and james, and even logan have.  “ honestly I’m just making sure you don’t bring our kids to space, or make some other stupid ass decision because you’re hyped up on coffee and too much pizza. ”

natasha suspects, of course, that clint knows better — that if there is some grander purpose to these visits, it’s more that she misses him. even in death she can’t help but watch out for him, try to make sure he eats at least one vegetable a week. ideally more, but she’ll take what she can get. natasha’s never lived in an ideal world, after all.

“ how are you? ”

“Mhmm I don’t know, for attention is mostly my thing.” he hummed, moving closer and plopping down beside her. He wasn’t at all surprised that she was making sure he wasn’t doing anything stupid. If he was totally honest with himself, he was totally in over his head, he really shouldn’t be raising their boys alone, they needed her. “It’s actually not a half bad plan, but I’m trying to behave.. I ate veggies twice this week.” He of course left out the fact that one of the times the carrots had been absolutely covered in ranch.

“I’ve been better..” he sighed, running a hand through his hair, and not fully meeting her piercing gaze. “I managing to you know sleep.. so that’s something right?” he shrugged, knowing that it really wasn’t much. “The boys keep asking for you... I don’t think I’m cut out for this, you did the dead spouse thing way better.”

“Nat Baby, we should probably stop meeting like this..” He had lost count how many times she had just appeared in his dreams, though it was always a bittersweet pain to see her there waiting for him when his body finally passed out from sheer exhaustion. When he was awake he kept himself busy, trying his best to be a semi-decent father to their boys, they were his primary concern. He liked to claim he was retired from being Hawkeye and a Shield agent, but that wasn’t entirely true, he still helped out with consultations and training.. he couldn’t fully give it up, but he could try to keep himself alive so their kids didn’t have to be orphans.

But when he was asleep.. he was almost always met with her, he wasn’t entirely sure if this was just some weird trauma induced figment of his imagination or if somehow, someway her soul was tethered to his since it had been him who was forced to sacrifice her in order to get the soul stone, but he didn’t spend too much time questioning it.

“Is the afterlife too boring for ya that you have to come check on little old me? Or is it more of checking up to make sure I haven’t done anything stupid?”
