@dropthetough
Just finished watching the Witcher on Netflix...
Yennefer is my favorite because I, too, hate the world but want everything in it.
It's okay guys we can keep doing it
my new year’s resolution is to become the local cryptid
It's December 31st, 2019.
You lay in your bed wondering what the next year will bring. Slowly, you check your clock, it's 11:59pm and with that, your eyelids slowly close, finally a wave of peace washing over you as you fall into a deep slumber.
What seems like hours pass, and suddenly your eyes snap open as you wake up.
"Oh no." You whisper.
old people always arguing at the customer service booth like damn this how u wanna spend yo last weeks
my favorite random study tools
1. quizlet games. the gravity game on quizlet literally saved my german grade lol
2. white boards. i do all my math practice on these and it makes it not only easier to do the practice but way more fun!
3. youtube. youtube really pulls through when you don’t fully understand a concept based on how your teacher explained it. there are probably thousands of videos explaining any topic you can think of- odds are one of them will help you out!
4. ted talks. this isn’t exactly a study tool, but there are tons of ted talks that explain ways you can study/retain information. i highly recommend them!
5. act like you already have your dream job. do you want to be a journalist? act like you’re reporting on a major story when you’re writing an english essay. apply the same logic to any class/job. it makes studying more fun!!
6. podcasts. find a podcast on a topic for your class and give it a listen. they’re great because you can listen to them any time- when you’re walking to class, in the shower, while you’re doing other studying… just having it on will help you subconsciously absorb the information!
7. diy study guides. did your teacher not make a study guide for a test? make your own! go through all your notes for the unit and put all the important information into one document. this way you’ll have a one stop shop when you go to study for the test!
thanks for reading! x
what are some tips/advice u would give to an incoming college freshman?
tips for incoming college freshman
hello, anon! i’m so sorry about this extremely late post but if you see this, i hope this helps or at least lets you know i didn’t forget about this post :’) (also im sorry about the rambling i do in this post rip)
so you’re starting college, what are some things you can get ready for?
go to orientation
i can’t stress enough how much you should go to orientation!!! the key thing about orientation, other than getting to know that resources are around campus / the campus, is getting to know everyone else.
college is made so much better with friends, and orientation is a great way to get to know people and make friends right off the bat. i know a lot of people can get antsy or nervous because it’s an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people, but it only takes one sentence to start a conversation that might lead to a lifelong friendship!
a quick tip for how to start a conversation if you’re shy:
make eye contact with someone
immediately smile (or wave if ur feelin adventurous)
if they’re somewhere close, like less than 3-5 steps away, try and walk over to them and introduce yourself!
ways to start the convo:
“hi, my name is ____, how are you?”
“hey, my name is ______. i’m majoring in _______, what about you?”
“so how’s everything going for you so far?”
ya idk where i was going with this point, just go to orientation, get to know your way around and get to know people!!!
get to know your residence hall + people in your major
i cannot stress this enough omg
the quickest and more surefire way to make friends is to get to know your hall / your floor / people in your class.
there will be activities that you can attend (esp as a freshie, maybe even as a hall). definitely go, even if you’re not that hype about large groups of people.
you definitely should go to the first couple of events, at least, because that’s how you’ll get to know people, and it’s also how people will know you.
from personal experience, i went out of my way at the beginning of the year to get to know every single person in my res hall, no matter who they were, regardless of anything. that was the best thing i could’ve done, like, ever.
so definitely get to know peeps (esp in ur hall / people you’ll see often bc that’ll help you in the long run too!!)
get on that study / time management!
you can set up a schedule if you like but time management is absolutely key. you’re going to need to manage your time well, because your workload is going to be more than back in high school, but you will spend less time in class than you did before, and i know that that can very serious mess up your schedule.
find a quiet place on campus to study, you don’t have to go there all the time, but it’ll be a good place to retreat if you need a place to study / if you need quiet time.
go to class!!!!!
just, idk. you’ve heard this a million times. go to class. you can skip a couple, but overall, go to class, even if it feels like it’s too hard to get up, etc etc.
go to class.
stay healthy
eat stuff, three meals if possible, two if not. just make sure you take care of yourself, okay!
campus
get to know where the important places are on campus!
health services
cafeteria
library
office of financial aid / business office
career services
anywhere else you think might be important
extracurriculars
you should definitely get involved in stuff on campus!
you don’t need to get involved with too much, because that can definitely lead to burnout, but see what clubs or organizations there are, look at greek life maybe, see if there are any service clubs to join, and just try things out and see what you like!
um idk what else there is, really, but if you have any other questions, please feel free to leave me an ask (i promise i’ll answer asap) or message me! hope this was helpful (a lot of this was me rambling on and on, haha), love!
yours,jo
Things I Wish I Knew Going into College
Listen up mother fuckers. Here’s the truth about college. No sugar coating, none of that cutesy shit. Here’s what I wish I knew before I stepped foot on campus.
When people say communal bathrooms aren’t that bad what they actually mean is people will leave their dirty underwear in the showers, used tampons, clean their dishes in the bathroom sink, and leave their explosive diarrhea everywhere. If you really don’t think you need shower shoes, think again.
If you know you are not strong in a particular subject, PLEAAASE seek help. Find a tutor or really good friends that are willing to help you because when you get a D in math because you didn’t seek help even though you knew you fucking sucked at math you’ll regret it because that stupid ass shit tanked your GPA.
You will have professors and TAs (teaching assistants) that give absolutely no fucks about actually teaching. If this ends up being the case, use your resources, learn to teach yourself, Quizlet is your friend.
People might seem so nice in the first week, but I promise you, when welcome week is over and there’s no more free food, they won’t ever look your way again. The ones who stick with you after that, cherish them.
The grind is real. Don’t expect to do the minimum and pass my friend. Because you will fail. I promise you. Sometimes you gotta stay up until 3AM because you’ve got two papers due, a speech to write, and math homework that you didn’t realize was actually due at 11:59pm the previous night. So if you’re going to college just to say you went to college, leave immediately.
With that said, you might realize that college isn’t even for you. And that’s okay. Just remember the thousands of dollars you’ve spent and make your decisions accordingly. But know that college is not the only way to be successful or make money. There are lots of sugar daddies out there.
You might change your major 2392897 times. It’s honestly whatever. You’ll figure it out and it will be fine.
I know you’ve already heard this one but I swear it’s fucking true. You will not want to drag your dead body out of bed to go to a fucking 8am class. I don’t care if you’re a morning person. Just don’t do it. Trust me. Trust anybody who says this.
Free stuff is the best stuff.
Sometimes you just need to sit down and have a glass of wine. Or see a therapist. Whichever works for you.
You don’t have to drink or do drugs, but you might feel pressured to. Do whatever you want but make sure you are always safe, smart, and with people you can trust and know will take care of you after you’ve had that 12th drink and can’t even stand up straight.
No one really cares what you wear, how you look or what you do because we’re all too busy trying to figure out how to do 20 hours of homework, 6 hours of studying AND fit in 8 hours of sleep.
Sometimes lectures are so pointless that you could teach yourself in 30 mins rather than sit for 2 hrs in a lecture. I’m not saying skip lectures, but I am saying that the more time you have, the more sleep you can get.
You’re funny af if you actually think you’re gonna get a full 8hrs of sleep. Try again.
College is your chance to reinvent yourself. Be very careful who you choose to become. Just don’t be that person who corrects the professor or types really fucking loud on their macbook during every fucking lecture.
Listen, you can really do whatever you want to do. You wanna be hoe? Do it. You wanna party Thursday through Saturday? Do it. Weed Wednesday? Go for it. But you sure as hell better show your ass to class and watch that GPA.
Nobody likes a snitch. Mind ya business.
Don’t let anybody make you feel like you do not deserve to be there. Because they will try you and you can still get a ticket for fighting. Except this time you’ll be charged for assault.
Don’t wear your favorite shoes to a party. Don’t wear open toes shoes to a party. The floors of a frat house or a house party are filthy. Don’t bring a purse, always use the buddy system, watch out for creeps cause they be out there.
Nobody cares who you were in high school, no one wants to know your ACT score or whether you were valedictorian. Shut up. Y’all got into the same damn college. No one cares.
If you’re going to bullshit something, do it well.
Do the readings because when your ass gets called on during discussion because your TA wants to know what you think about Mondrian’s take on contemporary art and you don’t know, you gonna look stupid as hell.
You might have a really cool roommate, or you might have a roommate that has sex with her boyfriend on your bed. There’s no in-between.
Bring A LOT of storage for your dorm.
If you see students napping in weird places, crying in the bathroom, or smoking weed on their dorm roof-top, it be like that sometimes.
Find a really good place to study. DO NOT study in your room because you associate your room with sleep so that’s what you’ll want to do instead of study If you study in your room.
Freshman 15 ain’t real.
SAFE SEX. THESE HOES DIRTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
College sucks sometimes, but put your mental health first. Sometimes you gotta skip class to take care of yourself and that is perfectly okay. You do not have to justify yourself or your decisions to anyone.
Good luck. I hope you survive. But if you don’t, like I said, there are always sugar daddies out there. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk y’all.
Let’s face it- even the most motivated and disciplined students can’t study for a couple of hours straight- we all need to rest. Taking a break from studying every now and then will improve your focus and attention. Below are some of our ideas what to do during study breaks. We divided them into categories depending on the length of your break. Feel free to try them out to later get back to your books refreshed and motivated!
5-10 minutes
Get some fresh air (either go outside, or simply stand up and go to the nearest window- don’t focus on anything and just breathe)
Leave your room/desk and go for a little walk
Throw yourself a little dance party (Cristina and Meredith did it and trust us, it works- put on some energising music and dace for a song or two)
Stand up and stretch!
10-20 minutes
Make yourself a proper, healthy snack (cut an apple into slices and put peanut butter on every slice or make yourself a healthy smoothie)
Watch a TedTalk on a completely unrelated topic (it will both relax you and still keep your brain working)
Do a little yoga (there are multiple mini-routines on youtube)
Browse the #studyblr tag (or maybe post your own photo with it!)
Take a quick shower (if you have a real study marathon ahead of you, a shower break can be a great way to get energised)
20-40 minutes
Call a friend
Clean your room (sounds pretty boring, but you’ll feel refreshed and super-productive once you’re done- and you won’t have to do this later!)
Take a nap (but really, try not to make it longer than 40 minutes)
Watch ONE episode of Friends (nothing better than a good laugh, right?)
40-60 minutes
Workout (go for a 30-minute run or find a workout video on youtube- you’ll end up energised and full of endorphins, which will help you to keep going)
Try a new recipe and make yourself dinner for later
Read a chapter of a book you’re currently reading (if you’re not reading any- start a book)

As many of you are getting closer to the finals, I thought it might be helpful to post about some apps that are really helpful for me - and more students. @masterpost @studyblrmasterposts
You’ll thank me later hehe
So, let’s start with my faves:
Productivity
Can’t concentrate? Your phone only distracts you because… Oh, wait, a new snap from my best friend…
Yeah, you know what I’m trying to say: If you are struggling with focusing on one thing and you get distracted fast - this app is gonna save your ass.
It works pretty simply:
There’s a tree, k? A smol lil tree. And this tree can only grow with your help - that means that it grows if you don’t open any apps on your phone during a certain amount of time (which you decide). If you open an app (which isn’t on your Whitelist) - your tree dies. Yep. You’re a monster. You killed an innocent tree.
“But… But I don’t want to be a killer..!” you say. Well, if you really stay focused, your lil tree will grow and become a big tree. And guess what - you’ll earn some coins. Which let you buy new trees - ähm - forms.
Can be installed on a laptop, too.
(Text me, if you want to create a so-called room - it’s a multi-player option for focusing together, which is only available for pro version, but it’s pretty cool!)
Flashcards (Review)
I’m still crying because of the smol, dead tree. But how can I explain my French friend that the tree is dead… oh, and his cat too?
For revising vocab or learning brand new stuff it is possible to learn with Quizlet. This app makes it possible to create your own flashcards or search through flashcards from other users. If Philippe has a better french flashcard map than you, it’s pretty obvious that you should use his.
There are cool methods you can use (they may not all be able to use while on a smartphone), e.g. matching pairs, flashcards revision, and more great stuff!
Works on Laptop and on mobile devices.
Practice (Exchange)
Well, now that you have mastered the basic skills of writing some words and so on, you'll need to practice this with someone else than your poor dog.
I mean, come on, he cannot not listen.
So, that means that you’ll need to write and maybe even talk to somebody who is able to correct you and won’t bark all the time or bite you. “Speaky” allows you to do both - nope, I'm not talking ‘bout barking and biting. With “Speaky” you can search speakers of your preferred language and lets you write them a message. If they accept your request (I mean, you’re not a creep, right?), you will be able to chat. If you make a mistake they can use the function which can correct your message in a very visible way - the red part is the false one and the green one is the corrected sentence.
But writing is not everything - it’s called “Speaky”, right? Well, then let’s just try voice mail! :D It’s a great tool, even if you need to be in a quiet place - Nah, please not your bathroom, k?
This app is available on laptop, too.
(Oh, and don’t forget - it’s a win-win situation if you offer your help there to someone who wants to learn your language.)
More apps coming soon!
