Title: Woman Bathing (La Toilette) Artist: Mary Cassatt (American [active in France], 1844-1926) Date: 1890-91 Genre: genre art Movement: Impressionism Style: Japonisme Medium: drypoint and aquatint Dimensions: 43.2 cm (17 in) high x 29.8 cm (11.7 in) wide Location: Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, NY, USA
This color print was one of ten that Mary Cassatt exhibited at the Gallerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, in 1891, and shows the extent to which she had absorbed techniques from Japanese art into her own style. Edgar Degas, upon seeing this print, exclaimed, "I do not admit that a woman can draw like that!"--a distinctly odd thing to say, given that he was a friend and sometime collaborator of Cassatt.

Miniature by an unknown Indian artist, painted between 1600 and 1605, depicting the Mughal emperor Akbar I "the Great" (r. 1556-1605) with a falcon. A highly skilled administrator and statesman, Akbar enlarged the Mughal Empire and promulgated a blend of Indian and Persian cultures. He favored and officially supported a syncretistic creed known today as Dīn-i Ilāhī ("Divine Religion"), which blended Islam with native Indian faiths and Zoroastrianism.
Now in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA, USA.
