Ah, the sweet smell of proofs. #module #crabboscurse #dnf #drunkardsandflagons #thistookmewaytoolong
The boys are back! *air guitars some Thin Lizzy* Finished the final (I think) piece for “Crabbo’s Curse” and hot doggity am I excited. #WIP #blottoandzeppo #dnf #drunkardsandflagons
A Valentine’s-themed entry into the Codex of Beasts! Also the closest I’ve ever come to furry art. I’m really ashamed of myself. Don’t look at me. #dnf #drunkardsandflagons #roleplaying #character #monster #race #werewolf #horny #valentinesday
Quick Quests 4!
A day late, but it's better than a week late. We'll see if I've learned my lesson in 13 days. Check out some troll versus goat action in the Drunkards and Flagons section.
I don't wanna get too excited yet, but I'm getting ready to start something big for Strange But True Games. Yuge. Ginormous. But I'm not gonna say much yet. I still have microphones to test and audio to play with. But I won't say much more.
Quick Quests 3!
Better late than never! Which is kind of a theme of my output lately. That said, I'm kinda pressed for time, so I'll make this quick: Quick Quest 3 is here! It's teen 80s horror-themed. Check it out over in the DnF section. I know it's a week late, but Quest 4 will be on time on Monday.
As for Monster Dater, it's still happening. Hopefully it'll happen by the end of January, but I don't wanna make another release-based promise I can't keep. Turns out there was a lot more writing and filling in charts than I planned, and I also decided to take time to format it a little bit in InDesign. I'll have more for you soon.
Merry Xmas!
I'll make this short. As I'm writing this, it's Xmas Eve, and I'm on call to pick up my parents from church. (I'd go with them but the statues start crying blood if I get too close.)
Last month, I talked about a game I wanted to put out for Xmas this year called Naughty or Nice. I wrote up some rules and sent them off to capable playtesters, and after hearing back, I realized that this game is worth spending some more time on. Expect both a free version AND a full, printed version available Xmas 2018.
Today, though, I give you two things:
Monster Dater is trucking along nicely. I'm still on track to have that out in the next few days, and I'm very excited about it. It'll be a freebie available for all brave enough to dig through that trashy nonsense, but I might also put out a limited edition print version later. I'll focus on getting this guy finished first, though.
Note one, but TWO new Quick Quests over in the Drunkards and Flagons section! When I decided to start putting these up every other Monday, I wasn't even thinking about Xmas happening on a Monday this year. How could I pass up the opportunity to make even MORE work for myself and put out a bonus, yuletide-themed Quick Quest.
Have a great New Year, everyone, and if you've ever made the mistake of playing Drunkards and Flagons (or any of our games) with your parents/extended family, please let us know how it went!
Who gets FREE content on a Monday?! You do! Check out the latest post on www.strangebuttruegames.com to learn more about the Drunkards and Flagons Quick Quests! #dnf #drunkardsandflagons #quickquests #free
Flashforward Friday 6!
It's Flashforward Friday! Ooooh, shiny! Queens of the Crystal Garden will be the perfect gaming experience for anyone who wants to flex their imagination and play as the magical girl of your dreams! This new project is both a standalone set, and expansion, for Drunkards & Flagons. Seeing a lack of the magical-girl genre in tabletop games, we started searching the multiverse for ideas. It borrows from the upcoming Crabbo's Curse so non-enhancement users can play, and includes all new characters, creatures, and story suggestions! Coming soon!
Flashforward Friday 4!
Hey look! We got some more graphics from the upcoming Drunkards and Flagons Module 3, Crabbo's Curse! Not all of the images I put together for the books or games are big illustrations. Some of them are smaller, incidental graphics (like the images in the headers of the DnF books). These are just a few of such pictures that'll pop up in Crabbo's Curse.
Flashforward Friday!
I said I'd do a thing and here I am! Doing the thing!
Today is the first ever Flashforward Friday, where we show you a glimpse into the future of SBTG! This time, it's a sneak peak at an image from an upcoming Drunkards and Flagons module, Crabbo's Curse! There will be context later, but you'll have to buy the book when it comes out.
See you next Friday!
Alert! We're doing a thing!
Hidely ho there, neighborinos! Things have been hectic but busy for all of us involved with SBTG, but that's not an excuse to completely avoid the Internet. Starting this Friday (TOMORROW!) We'll be bombarding your social media feeds with a glimpse into our future with "Flashforward Friday"! Stay plugged in with a sneak peak of something we'll be delivering to you in the not-too distant future EVERY FRIDAY. Make sure to follow us on all of the places!
Now I Just Feel Bad
Hi there.
I know. It's been a while. Funny enough, the Codex of Champions--my primary reason for updating for a while--has been updated with the full 40 characters for a couple weeks. I just haven't had time to make an update. Yes, work has been ramping up, but if SBTG is going to flourish, I need to do better about making it a priority. And I will.
I've also been negligent in making sure other members of the company have been getting what they need. Our editor now has War World and the Codex of Champions physical copies, and those should be ready for human consumption soon. As I've been hyping both for a while, I am still legitimately excited to get those into your hot little hands.
In talking separately with the other members of Strange But True Games, we all have some amazing ideas on how to make our product and brand flourish. The problem is that we're all really busy folks, and it's tricky to nail down a weekend evening so we can have our first real company meeting to discuss our strategies moving forward.
But why hold off until a weekend? Part of what I hope to accomplish with this meeting is a pilot episode of recorded Drunkards and Flagons games. If there's interest from the rough nonsense we put together, we may continue in providing auditory altered adventures for your consumption at a fairly regular pace.
Looking forward to making another update soon.
NEW Game! NEW Codex Entries! NEW Staff!
Hot diggity dangit! I've been away for a bit, but I promise it's been worth it. We got LOTS going on today!
NEW GAME!
That's right! As mentioned ever-so-briefly before, it's my absolute pleasure to announce LAWS OF SIDURI! Like MARDUK, LAWS OF SIDURI is a game of psychic battle and wit, but here, it'll get you drunk. Players take turns drawing cards and predicting whether their number is higher or lower than their opponent's. The loser drinks. Simple as that! A separate deck of drinking laws established throughout the game make it a fun, flexible experience that changes every time, especially when players start adding their own drinking laws to your permanent collection. Learn more inside! (Quick gameplay guide coming very soon!)
NEW CODEX ENTRIES!
I know, I know. I'm slacking. Here's two for the past two weeks. The remaining few (for this volume) won't be on any sort of steady schedule, as I'm going to start prepping the Codex for print! I'm currently waiting on the proof for the NEXT game, and once that's finalized, I'll crack down so I can have at least an estimate as to when you can get your grubbing little paws on a deck of character cards. This time around, I give you some standard sci-fi character fare in The Explorer, and then something a little...weirder with Sex Raisin. Check 'em both out in The Codex of Champions.
NEW STAFF!
You might not have been aware that we were even putting out LAWS OF SIDURI. That's on me; I've been slacking on the social media stuff. My bad. To fix that, I've decided to enlist some help in the form of Eric! He's been a huge supporter of everything SBTG since the get-go and was a big part of early DnF game nights. He's also been instrumental in spreading the Big Red Button love in the south...which sounds...weird? Regardless, he's already done a lot to help us out, so we're saying "Thank you!" by giving him more responsibilities.
Between Eric on social media, our recent addition of Steve on editing duties (and maybe another future project with his name on it), Chris buried away in his lab working away on some super serious projects to be announced later, and this guy letting his brain run wild on fifteen different projects at once, 2017 is going to be a HUGE year for SBTG! Feel free to say "hi" to us through any of the links in the "About Us" section.
BEHOLD! Eyevan the GR-8
Sometimes the hardest part of a new character is the name.
Most of the time, the image comes first. It starts as a combination of lines to illustrate a germ of an idea and then morphs and folds and fills in with glorious ink and color to create...something. From there, based on the look, it's usually easy to come up with skills and a backstory and an artifact.
But then there's the name. So what do you call a psychic warrior practicing a forbidden art and a giant eyeball in the center of his helmet? Eye...eye...EYEVAN! PERFECT, I'M A GENIUS! But it's not enough. Hm. What title could I give a character oh-so-cleverly named "Eyevan"? THE GREAT! BUT IT'S SCI-FI! Make it all caps, replace part of the word with a number, throw an unnecessary dash, and boom! Eyevan the GR-8 is born!
Eyevan makes 32 entries in this here Codex. Gonna try to take it all the way to 40 before I stop this volume and start turning them into a deck of character cards. But that won't be the ONLY way to get ahold of new Champions for your own personal Codex.
If you're in Philly next Friday (February 3rd), head on out to Tattooed Mom for another FUSED UNDERGROUND, where you can pick up two entries into the Codex that won't appear online! You'll only be able to get these babies from me (or Chris, next time he's at an event) live and in person. That's right: if you want free stuff, you have to engage me. It's alright, though; I'm not contagious any more.
Big things a-commin' your way. Stay tuned for more news on more
It's 2017! Hot Damn!
("Damn," indeed.)
A lot of things have happened since I posted last. It's officially the year of Blade Runner. I turned thirty. Another brand new game is headed your way. We've got a new President.
That last point is kind of gonna be the focus of what I want to talk about today.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm left of center, politically. I'm not ashamed of it, and I don't try to hide it. That's just where my* values fall. One of the things that came out leading up to the Inauguration today was that the new administration plans on cutting funding for the arts. I don't have the words to tell you how angry this makes me, so instead of cursing the darkness, let's praise the light.
Patton Oswalt posted something on Facebook that spoke to me (and I'll poorly summarize part of it here): if you want to do something to defy this administration, buy art. Buy it from someone whose hand you could shake and say, "Hey, thanks for this thing. It brings me joy." See local independent theatre. Support indie movies. Buy comics made by someone in your town. If you live in Philly, that's going to be incredibly easy for you on Friday, February 3rd. Jerks Productions is hosting yet another Fused Underground showcase of local artists. I've participated in these events before, and they're pretty rad. I'll be debuting a new game ahead of its official release on February 14th (but more on LAWS OF SIDURI next week), but you'll also be able to give REAL cash dollars to REAL artists from the Philadelphia area for REAL ART FOR YOUR WALL OR DESK OR WHATEVER! Like I said, it's a good time full of booze, art, and horror. Come on out if you can.
Also, three new entries in the Codex of Champions. Expect an update on the physical release of that within a month. But that wasn't the most important thing to say today.
I love you all.
-Eddie
*I'm speaking only for me, Eddie, here; I'm not speaking for Brainchild Extraordinaire Christopher Sweetapple.
Codex of Champions: The Spirit of '16 looms over us!
Hey now! I got one in on time! Imagine that!
So the year's almost at an end, and I'm almost at the end of this rum and coke, and I figured this is the right time and place to say some things.
2016 was rough for a lot of people for a lot of reasons. I won't go into it; if it's hit you hard, you know. I can't completely disparage a year in which Christopher and myself officially and legally set about on this grand adventure known as Strange But True Games, but it was tough in its own way. The year began with David Bowie dying not long before my birthday and ends with the death of Carrie Fisher*. There were other things that happened that may or may not make the Spirit of '17 a more terrifying beast (one reserved for another Codex, perhaps), but that we have yet to see, as the psychics have the night off. For now, though, we'll leave this year giving a face to the Spirit of '16 over in the Codex of Champions.
2017 is going to bring a lot of good things for Strange But True Games. I don't want to say TOO much, so here's a photo. These are all things in the works in various states of testing. (Personally, after initial playtests, it's a lot easier to play with actual pieces and cards and boards instead of mockups, and with the magic of the Adobe Suite and The Game Crafter, I can actually do that.) I literally have a binder full of game ideas that are in various states, and I'm itching to get them all into your wanting fists. This next year is going to be a big year for us, just you wait.
Whatever your feelings on 2016, use those feelings for good. Whether you're happy or afraid or excited or scared or a mix of that and anything else, use that. Take that energy and do something. Make something. Do the thing.
Happy New Year.
X-Mas Appologies
Wow. It's been a while. I'd list out excuses, but that's not what I came here to do. Instead, I wanted to tell you I put three brand new entries into the Codex of Champions. (Technically, though, there are four; two weeks ago, I tried TWICE to put up a new entry, so yeah, there you go, four new guys.)
This time around, though, I wanted to come with a little something extra. As I've mentioned before, there's a grander plan for the Codex of Champions that differs significantly from the previous book-shaped releases. This time around, the Codex of Champions will be released as a deck of cards. I figured this would be the easiest way to use these without forcing a player or DM to photocopy their books. Yes, the PDFs will be available for print at any time, but c'mon; you can see the picture. That deck of cards is gonna look REALLY cool.
War World is coming along. I'll have more info on a release date soon. The last thing in my way before the editing process is putting together the rulebook. Hoping to get that cranked out next week. I've also got the proof for another game coming my way next week, and there should be more testing following. Pencil in a date in March when you can get some serious drinking done; this game's gonna be a doozy.
In the meantime, under the influence of some boxed wine, I cooked up yet another game that I'll be working out. This one may be out in time for summer. As always, stay tuned, and have a Merry X-Mas!
