"You deduce that with your expert sleuth skills?" Nicholas snorted. Yeah, he was sure he looked like shit; would probably look even worse in the daylight. It was one of those moments he was glad other people couldn't see in the dark like he (and he was pretty sure Vash) could. Even with his shades on, he could see every detail on the old(er) man's exhausted face.

"You look like worm dung, too. I'd say you should sleep in the car more, but I'm pretty sure you're the only thing keepin' Shortround from driving us straight into a sand dune." Seeing as he and Vash often slept the day away to take watch at night... It was odd. Lately, he'd often found it easier to sleep in the car, despite how cramped it was, or how it jerked at each bump. Easier than a quiet, comfortable(ish) hotel room.

"I used my eyes. Didn't even have to look that hard." He glanced over at the other man. Wolfwood was tense, and a bit defensive. Pretty standard for the kid as far as he was concerned, but lately? There was something... lost about the way he acted. It'd only gotten worse the closer that they got to Ju Lai. "Careful. If the newbie hears you talking like that and gets in a twist about it, I'm sure the hell not jumping in to defend your honor." Roberto snorted a bit in a chuckle that broke off into a bit of a cough. "...Those two have eyes too, you know."

Post-July AU? (Slight spoilers)

So, obviously it makes it a little tricky to do anything with a character after the point where they die in the story, so for the sake of being able to do stuff with the old man still, I'm doing a small little re-write of my own. He did not die after the Nail. Just ALMOST died. He was patched up by someone (Probably Wolfwood who took the cigarettes as re-payment) just enough to be handed over to a group evacuating the town who were able to get him better attention.) He's not doing GREAT, and he's more then enough reason to retire... but for RP purposes he is alive and available for shenanigans. Even if he doesn't want to be.

Leaning against the back of the Car. Roberto took a long drag from his cigarette. It was late into the night. The stars were out and everything was quiet but the occasional cry of a great worm in the distance. A perfect, peaceful night. ...He'd rather have been sleeping through it, if he was honest. Insomnia was a bitch, and didn't seem likely to let him go any time soon. Which was a shame. He could have used the sleep before morning came and he found himself dealing with whatever fresh hell their little rag-tag group managed to find themselves in the middle of. Roberto exhaled, turning his head up to look at the sky. "...Couldn't sleep either, hm?"

Wolfwood had clearly been lost in thought- something he's been prone to a lot these days- enough that he didn't even notice Roberto until he'd come around to the side of the car for a smoke, jumping a bit when he saw him.

"...Guess not." He moved around the old reporter to lean against the car as well (notably taking a wider berth than usual), fishing out a cigarette of his own. He was tense, more so than he'd been before, but the cocky aggression had been replaced with something close to apprehension.

"So. What's keepin' you up, gramps?"

Roberto took another long drag of his cigarette. "Never been an easy sleeper." He shrugged. "Can't say our little misadventures have made things any better. Guy like me just isn't built for all this excitement." The old reporter glanced over at Nicholas... his gaze impassive. "You look like shit." Roberto noted.

It hadn't been a threat. Just a statement of fact. If he came back too soon, they'd accuse him of slacking off and the Newbie would come in to see for herself... and who knew what problems that would cause? And if he took too long? Well, Zazie had already seen first hand the sort of busy-bodies he traveled with. "Technically." Roberto let out a belch. "But we don't really want to be here either. Guess that means we all get to be miserable together, eh?" He needed to play this carefully. Roberto knew he was on loose sands here, and the old reporter knew when it was better to keep your head down and your mouth shut. He wasn't here for a story anyway. "An old drunk on a hot day like this? It'll be a miracle if I remember my way back in the first place." He hummed. "Us humans abandoned this town a long time ago. We don't come back to places like this unless we have to. The desert can take it for all I care." A canteen for everyone and a spare just in case. That was the load that Roberto had brought with him to the well. He filled and capped each one under the watchful eyes of the Worms, and carefully packed them away.

"Hmph." Miserable indeed. Then again, humans were the most interesting thing to happen here for eons. If only they could just be trusted to behave.

The town looked just like many other abandoned ones, deserted with whatever the former occupants couldn't take along left behind. The Worms flitted around, growing thicker in concentration the closer they got to the center of town and the well, until it became evident that they were coming and going from one building closest to the well.

There's an odd green glow, not far off from the Worms themself, leaking from the open doors and windows of the shelter and an odd, thick substance spilling out of every opening. Wax-like, clearly produced by the Worms.

Its between this building and Roberto that Zazie positions themself, stance even more obviously defensive then before while they watch him fill his canteens.

The thought may occur to the reporter, who knows so much about the world he lives in, that no one has ever seen a Worm hatching ground before. The simple fact that Zazie had actually allowed him in this close instead of chasing him off at first appearance certainly says something, even if it might not be clear what exactly.

The thought HAD occurred to him as he caught sight of the mess out of the corner of his eye. It also occurred to him that it didn't really matter if he was the first human to see something like this or not, because saying anything about it would be asking to get stung to death by a swarm of pissed off worms. "It was this way back out again, right?" Roberto asked with a stretch, pointing back the way that he had come. "You coming along again, or do I get to find my own way this time?"

"Trespassing, apparently." Roberto turned slowly to face the swarm, reaching for his flask as he did. He was not NEARLY drunk enough for shit like this. "We're low on water. I drew the short straw to go and see if the well still had something left besides rocks." He took a swig, wiping his mouth with a sleeve. "...I could leave if you want, but if I come back too soon with nothing to show for it you'll have a group of rowdy kids stomping through here." He gave a tired chuckle. "...Since it'll be the same if I don't come back at all, maybe you should just walk with me so you can make sure I don't stumble across whatever it is you don't want me to see here?"

Zazie doesn't move as he reaches for something in his jacket, though they're eyeing him behind the mask. A gun would do little good against them, especially his little derringer. But that flask of his was certainly no threat, only making the reporter even more of a mess then he already was.

"Technically your existence is trespassing," they bite out, bristling at his casual threats of bringing the rest of his sorry crew with him if he had to come back. They had absolutely no interest in dealing with Vash the Stampede in their little home. Less so Nicholas the Punisher. They'd never hear the end of it from him.

".... Fine. There is water in the well, I use it. I'll take you there and then you can go away and forget about this place." ... Unlikely given he was a reporter but since he was still alive maybe he also knew when to keep his mouth shut about things.
