DRAG EDNA PLS
her comical & over-the-top villainy is better suited for a daytime soap than any attempt to replace sybil of all people
Mrs. Hughes: You need to react when people cry.
Thomas: I did, I rolled my eyes.
i am her
Isobel: Thanks for agreeing to see me.
Violet: I didn't. You just walked in and started talking.
Robert, at least try to be a bit more subtle at being an asshole
What do you think about Mary revealing Edith's secret to Bertie?
When I look at it from a structuralist perspective, ie. why the writers included it, I get really bitter. They wanted to ~redeem~ Edith and make her likeable and tried so hard to do this so they made Mary needlessly mean to her, like really, beyond anything Mary has ever done to Edith and without cause in order to then set on the path to restore the relationship and end the series with Edith in a positive light. When, to me at least, it had seemed like Mary had moved on from all the pettiness between her & Edith and was like, well we don’t get along, we don’t like each other, but I don’t have to actively pay attention to her anymore and live my own life. I really liked that portrayal because although I love sisterly relationships, I also like when shows represent family in a way that’s contradictory to the ‘blood is thicker than water’ perception that seems to be so favourable in media the story. And when this representation happens and everyone can be in peace with each other, the story is even more revolutionary.
From a character perspective, like if I am to take what any showrunner throws at me at face value and not question their choices, then I think it was a horrible thing of Mary to do and she shouldn’t have done that and what a terrible person she is! But that’s what they want me to think and I don’t like being told what to do. What I actually think is that it’s completely out of character for Mary to do without an external motive, so I’m all for any headcanons about what shitty thing Edith did to Mary to such a this reaction. Perhaps Edith told George a fiendish secret about his mother, or let something slip in front of Carson, or idk, send me your headcanons :)
why is Cora the only one on the show with winged eyeliner. this has bothered me since season one.
Because O’Brien thought it would best accentuate Cora’s eyes so she could proceed to get lost in them?
people in my life: you are so inspiring, i am going to do what you do, live by your code
me, who hasn't gotten out of bed in 3 days: listen. i think you've been fundamentally misinformed about some things
punch him in the face, Mrs Hughes
@rellic-downton reblogged your photoset and added: “Anyone else think the way this scene is written is incredibly sloppy? …”
This is a sloppy scene, yes. If you don’t actually want to write a novel to fix it, you can always go read some excellent fanfic that does.
This is great and all, but when will someone add to my posts to rec me mary x anna smut?
Well, not having read any Mary/Anna smut, myself, I can’t say if these stories are any good, but these might be ones you’ll enjoy:
Til There Was You by ElizabethCastle
The Wedding Night by honkiesinachurch
A Blasphemous Affection by GallifreyanPanicMoon
Hard Lines and Soft Edges by MetalAndInk
If you want to find more fic recs up this alley, try sending PMs to these authors and you might elicit more recs (and who knows? maybe also some more of their creativity.)
And let’s not forget the AO3 offerings. And Tumblr has some options, too:
Lady Oracle - You should send her a prompt!
and you might try liking this post. Who knows, maybe with a bit of encouragement (and an ask?), you could elicit more from that writer, too…
You could always try writing your own, of course.
Finally, if you do read any of these, share your opinions and stir up more interest! Leave favorites, follows, kudos, etc. Write reviews. Write a survey post with recs. If you want these stories, there are other people who do too, and they’ll be grateful for your help. Promoting the unusual pairings is the best way to elicit more works that feature them.

Anyone else think the way this scene is written is incredibly sloppy? 1. Mary’s sentiments in the last screenshot seem incongruous to her character’s stance on war and such things throughout the series. 2. If you replace that “should” with “have to” the sentiment becomes much more defeated and reflective of Mary’s actual views 3. Am I being nitpicky or is this real: a novel by me
Mary/Anna au: Carson unknowingly advised Mary to tell Anna she loves her and Anna thinks that’s hilarious.
