MG didnβt hate ellie williams. she hated how much she envied and respected the other girl. the idea of it made her stomach churn.
MG had always been known as the straight A studentβthe perfect daughter who was independent, sociable, and diligent. what no one knew, however, was the way she brewed with jealousy whenever she looked at ellie williams.
ellie was also a straight A student, but much more laid back. her smarts came from curiosity and a natural quickness. she was the complete opposite both socially and visually, but she kept up. it was all natural for ellie, and MG was envious. she couldnβt help it. when MG would stay up all night studying, ellie would be sleeping or playing games.
ellie and MG were always neck to neck when it came to their grades. when MG thought she did good, ellie did better. ellie never picked up on the competition, until dina and jesse were talking about it during lunch.
βyeah, MG? sheβs kindaβ¦β jesse started, as dina cut him off.
βintense? self centered? weird?β
βi was going to say determined, but i guess those work too. especially when it comes to ellie.β
ellie was just scrolling on her phone, when she heard jesse say her name. βwhat?? whatβre you talking about?β
jesse rolled his eyes, looking at ellie.* βyou donβt see it? whenever the big smith gives you your paper, MG will glance at it and youβll see her jaw like- clench. itβs a little freaky.β
dina nodded, finishing her chewing as she pointed at jesse. βno literally-! the other day, when she heard us talking about how high ellie scored, she was like- her hands were clenched so fucking tight- it was scary as shit!!β
jesse and dina continued, and ellie thought about it a little longer. she hadnβt realized it until the two mentioned it. now sheβll glance at MG the day after tests. MG would be with her friends, high fiving them whenever they got good grades. but when ellie got her test, all of a sudden, MGβs eyes would find hers, and her lips would purse before forcing herself to look back at her friend.
ellie loved it. it was entertaining in classes jesse or dina werenβt in. seeing the put together MG so irked at the idea of someone being so close to her academically made ellie smirk.
ever since that day, ellieβs been trying to spur her on. once, ellie got points deducted because she turned it in late. it got lost in a pile of drawings on her desk at home. when ellie finally turned it in, MG was fiddling with her pencil, her brows furrowed. sheβd glance at ellie, whoβd be busy doodling.
it irritated her. how carefree ellie could be in life and still keep up with her grades. MG couldnβt handle it. she used to doodle too.
the end of the unit was coming up and the class could choose between an essay or a project, but they had to do it with a partner. MG and ellie hated working with partnersβwhich was something they had in common. MG was a control freak, and ellie was just awkward (and a little standoff-ish) when it came to new people.
you can only imagine the reaction MG and ellie had when Mr. D partnered them up. MGβs eyes widened slightly and ellie mumbled something under her breath. MG walked up to ellie who was shoving a notebook in her bag haphazardly, fiddling with her necklace. βso, the libraryβs open during lunch if you wanna study there?β
βfuck.β ellie breathed out, nodding as she heaved her bag on. βyeah, sure.β
the meet up in the library was tense, but obviously only from one side. MG was already writing in her notes when ellie came in. just ellieβs presence was obnoxious to MG. MG watched as ellie threw her bag on the floor casually, taking out her notebook and laptop when MG tilted her head.
β..so, uhm, this is due tomorrow- i was just wondering what youβd started on..?β
βoh. uhm, i havenβt actually.. started yet.β ellie rubbed the back of her neck, as MG almost scoffed. how could ellie not have already started? how could she do everything so last minute and still be so good?
βright..β MG cleared her throat. βso the question was- how does lady macbeth influence macbethβs decision to kill the king, and how does this reflect their relationship?β
βlady macbeth was a bitch.β
MG hesitated, her brows furrowed. βwhat??β
βi mean.. she pushed him to kill the king. he didnβt really need to do that. it wasnβt the answer to any of their problems so..β
βi disagree- i mean, without lady macbethβs push, he wouldnβt have killed the kingβhe was just obeying his wife cause sacrifice meant everything.β
βhe didnβt have to kill the king.β
βhe needed to to take the crown.β
βhe was already in line to be king, it wasnβt necessary?β
a twitch. MG hated that ellie was right. βlife happens though! you canβt rely on that or- or fate, so he needed to kill the king-!β ellie noticed the defensiveness and bit back a smile. she wanted to see how far she could push MG.
βyou canβt just act like youβre always right.β
that comment made MGβs nose twitch. she looked at ellie, who was smiling almost mockingly.
βwithout lady macbeth to encourage him, he wouldnβt have been able to become king. you shouldnβt wait around and- and expect things to go smoothly. sometimes you have to take action-!β
βitβs not about you though?β ellie tilted her head, and MG groaned. βletβs just do the project!β
βhow can we when we havenβt came to an answer yet?β ellie was doodling away on her notes and MG huffed. ellie sighed and fidgeted with her ring and pinky fingers, a habit MG picked up on.
βiβm just gonna go to the bathroom, yeah? letβs think this shit over for a sec.β the moment ellie left, MG peeked at ellieβs notesβwell, what she thought was ellieβs notes. in the margins, of each page, was MG. doodles of MGβs eyes, her lips, and even the necklace she wore daily.
when MG would stare with envy, ellie would stare with admiration.
when ellie came back, MG was about to say something about ellie slacking off when the librarian can to tell them the library was closing. MG was busy putting her stuff in their designated pockets, when ellie spoke up. β..if you want, we can finish up at my place? less chance of getting.. interrupted.β
ellieβs place. MG didnβt know why, but the idea of being alone with ellie in a room made the heat rush to her head. she loathed the feeling. β..yeah, sure.β she wouldβve forced a smile, but she didnβt feel like it. not when she was still stuck on those doodles in the book.
ok so this is lowk BUTT but bear w me please its been months
