He felt his stomach drop at Ramesh’s immediate response. Maybe he had been too forward. Why would the man want to go get a drink with his daughter’s professor? Surely that violated some sort of professional ethics. Edgar had an apology on the tip of his tongue when the other vampire agreed, almost out of left field.

Edgar blinked, his brain taking a moment to register that Ramesh had said yes. Yes to drinks. Then an excited smile spread across his face, genuinely happy that the other had taken up his offer.

“There’s a place not too far from here. We have faculty happy hour there sometimes. Especially after finals are graded.” As he explained he lead the way, enjoying the warmth of the evening.

Ramesh’s casual question caused the older man to stumble over his feet once more, cursing under his breath at how ridiculous he must seem to the doctor. “No, no,” he says rather hastily. Before his grandparents deaths, they had pushed rather unkindly that Edgar marry and secure an heir before it was too late, but he always found some excuse or another.

He knew what his grandfather thought of him, that the older Wayne had his suspicions of his grandson’s sexuality, so it became increasingly harder to weasel his way out of any gatherings hosted by the family, impending matches waiting to be introduced. Edgar felt a tad guilty at the relief that overcame him at the news of his grandfather’s passing, a heart attack in the middle of a mid-fall hunt. His grandmother, bless her soul, while always agreed with her husband, was not as…assertive.

Edgar gave the other a sheepish smile, realizing how panicked he must have sounded at the question. Nearly 200 years later and the casual mention of family still made him tense. It wasn’t that he was opposed to the concept, just that he lacked the….drive…to create said family. Particularly in the natural sense.

“Sorry, yeah, no, no children. Never married.” His expression turned more thoughtful. “Well, I was basically married, once. Essentially common law.”

Edgar scratched at his cheek, keeping his gaze on the pathway. “How about you? Any other children besides Chhaya?” His eyes briefly looked over to Ramesh before including, “Are you and Professor Trilling engaged?” He hadn’t seen a ring, so married seemed unlikely. It seemed rude to ask about Chhaya’s mother, unless Ramesh wanted to offer up that information himself.

Ram offered a content half smile in response.

“You know,” he kept stride next to Edgar who was practically vibrating with excitement. It was refreshing. “Other than with Ares, I don’t tend to go to happy hours.” even if he was invited which he hardly ever was. People assumed he would be too busy so they didn’t ask, “Even then I can’t remember the last time we went to a bar.” If they drank it was in the comfort of one of their own homes. They weren’t exactly people persons.

His hands pulled from his pockets, reaching out to steady Edgar by the arm.

“Are you alright? -- I’m sorry.” Ram had assumed he did something inappropriate, “I shouldn’t pry...” He relaxed a bit when Edgar answered, running his hand over his jaw line, “Oh no, no. Chhaya keeps me busy enough.” Perhaps at one point he thought he’d have a big family -- to give his children what he didn’t have growing up: a happy, warm, full home with lots of love. But he did that just as well with one.

When Edgar continued though it pulled Ram from his thoughts.

“Are myself and Ares what?” He had to stop, right in his tracks, “Are we engaged? Is that what... --” Ram couldn’t stop himself from laughing, “I’m sorry! I’m... --” he held out a hand for Edgar to wait, composing himself, “No, god, no.” He ran his fingers through his hair, pushing curls off of his forehead and back towards a neat bun, “Crap, sorry. Do people think we’re an item?” He looked at Edgar, amused by the thought. No harm was done. “I was married. But Chhaya’s mother and I...” that was a whole can of worms he wouldn’t get into, “Aren’t on speaking terms.” He’d leave it there. Instead he offered another light chuckle, “No. Both Ares and I are married to our work, -- The moment he looks to the sky I might as well not be there.” But he was Ram’s space cadet so it was ok. “I apologize for laughing; I was just shocked. I would have never known we were giving people the wrong idea.”

He felt conflicted at the way Ramesh talked about the other professor. It was heart warming, how obvious he cared for Professor Trilling. But also, it only confirmed what Edgar had suspicions of.

Still, he gave a small nod. “I’ve heard great things about Professor Trilling’s work. We haven’t talked much, different departments and all, but he seems like a good man.”

The point of contact felt warm, and Edgar could easily smell the other’s cologne from this distance. His mouth turned dry. Straightening his jacket as a distraction, he shot a surprised look to Ramesh. Was he…really not aware of his affect on others? Edgar had certainly seen the dreamy look many students held while they sat through the doctor’s guest lectures.

Edgar bit his lip, debating with himself if he should explain to Ramesh that while he was clearly an incredibly intelligent man that wasn’t quite what he’d meant (though that certainly amplified the other man’s appeal). As the silent war waged in his mind, he hadn’t realized they had already reached the main door.

Not ready to go their separate ways, Edgar perked up. “Wait!” Well, that was a little too eager. Giving a small cough to adjust himself, Edgar shifted from foot to foot, trying not to talk himself out of this. Even if the good doctor was involved with Professor Trilling, that didn’t mean they couldn’t still be friends, right?

“Uh, I mean. Would you like to go for a drink? I-it doesn’t have to be at a bar, coffee’s great too!”

Ramesh was almost about to wave his hand in front of Edgar’s face (afraid he had had a stroke) when the other vampire spoke again.

And quite abruptly at that.

Ram raised his brows at the request, “I -- Now?” He glanced at his watch. It wasn’t like Ram had anything else going on so he offered a slightly amused shrug.

“Sure.”

Why not?

“I’ve been needing one.” He ran a hand over his brow then through his curls, exhausted. “It’s been a long couple of weeks.”

He would let Edgar lead the way. Ram slipped his hands into his pockets as they walked.

“So are you married, Edgar? Kids?” It was just small talk; Ram didn’t mean anything by it.

Khadir waited to see what how long it would take for the other to put it together. It took a moment, but finally Ram got there. “I told you this” of course it had been when they were children and possibly in the same letter where Khadir had discussed seeing the movie An American Werewolf in London, so perhaps Ram hadn’t thought he was being serious. “and you -” the smell had hit him almost as soon as he’d come over “you’re a-”

The look Ram gave Khadir was incredulous.

“I mean you did but at the time I didn’t think you were being serious! We were kids. I thought you were... I don’t know, doing through a wolf-phase.” Holy shit.

He was still processing how small a world it was when Khadir spoke again. Or, well, began to...

“Surgeon. Yes. I told you I was going to be pre-med before you stopped responding to my letters. What was that about?” He locked eyes with Khadir. They hadn’t ever met in person but he hoped the close relationship they had as children was enough for Khadir to read Ram’s silent message: She doesn’t know. “-- Chai can you give us a moment.” without missing a beat Ram took Khadir by the bicep leading him to the other end of the store. At least he could pass off his abruptness as annoyance that Khadir had just dropped off the face of the planet one day. But they could talk about this later.

“So here’s the thing: this,” he motioned to himself, “-- is a new development. And I haven’t figured out how to tell her yet.”

He returned the smile ten-fold. “Oh, I completely understand. I have to write down most things, just in case.”

Edgar’s expression dropped slightly. Ah, right. Dr. Mah-er Ramesh was very close with Professor Trilling. “Well, I can’t recall very many times I’ve seen you around campus without him.”

Still, he nodded, a small rush of excitement at the prospect of walking together. God, he felt like a schoolboy again. His brain unhelpfully supplied that they were in a University after all.

At Ramesh’s comment Edgar found himself stumbling over his feet, eyes going wide. As he regained his balance he searched the other’s face frantically, realizing he was actually being serious. There wasn’t a trace of teasing or mirth in Ramesh’s features.

“W-well, when the lecturer is someone like yourself I imagine the crowds are a bit larger.” He waved awkwardly at Ramesh’s general being. Edgar coughed to hide his embarrassment. “You were interesting to listen to, is all. I don’t know a whole lot about the medical field.”

Ram offered a half shrug.

“We connected almost immediately when we met. Since then I suppose we’ve been a bit inseparable. He’s a good man. And has a brilliant mind.” Ares was his best friend, he’d take any opportunity to brag about the man.

He caught Edgar stumbling out of the corner of his eye, a hand reaching out to steady the man by the shoulder, “...Someone like myself?” He asked, quirking a brow curiously. Ram was arguably one of the best in his field but he supposed he’d never thought about it. Maybe it’d be different if they were in the mortal realm but Faerune was so small; He doubted very many people knew of his accolades. He wasn’t sure what Edgar had meant.

“Well, that’s comforting. I worry I put people to sleep. -- As well read as I like to be I’m sure you know far more about literature than I ever could. So we’re even.” He held the door open for Edgar as they exited. “-- Well, it was lovely speaking with you, Professor Wayne...”

Ares had spent his time pondering the meaning of Ramesh’s words while he was in the shower. He’d studied the qualities of other species out of fascination when he’d moved to Faerune. This sort of behaviour was… suspect.

He threw over the t-shirt as Ram’s told him that he would tell him what happened if he could. “Vampires can’t be compelled.” Ares commented, his brain still working overtime to connect the dots. “Unless… it was your sire that compelled you not to speak. Is that who the man was? Your sire?”

As far as Ares knew Ramesh didn’t know who his sire was so this was an interesting development.

Ram caught the garment, asking fondly, “I see the wheels turning... What’s your hypothesis?” he pulled his head through the head hole of Ares’ shirt. Its scent was comforting...

Which was good considering he immediately made a face as Ares’ continued.

“I detest that word.” He wouldn’t repeat it, “Yes. -- Of course, logically, I know there are multiple definitions but it suggests I need treat him like a king and follow his every beck and bloody call. Imagine this, Ares.” He stepped forward into the room, holding the taller man’s gaze, “One look, and you’re at my command. I’d say jump and you’d have to. You no longer have any autonomy. For a moment you aren’t you, you’re a puppet.” There was that anger, bubbling up to the surface again. “This was the second time he’s taken advantage of me, I could have been made to do anything.” That was the kicker for Ramesh, the power Jonah had over him. It didn’t matter if the man didn’t tell him to do anything unfortunate this time it was that if Jonah wanted to he could. “That’s...That’s...” he combed his fingers through his hair in frustration, “I plan my life out methodically. I have since I was a boy.” He was pacing back and forth now, as he often did in front of Ares when he was irritated or ranting about something but this was different. The more he paced the more he unraveled, “And yet too many times have things out of my control changed my life forever. I can’t... The threat of that happening at the mere snap of someone’s fingers is upsetting to say the least.” Again his hands rose to run over his brow in anger, “I have never had full control over my life and now I never will.” A pause, finally coming to a stop.

“And that’s bullshit.”

It was an exhausted form of anger. It read clearly across Ram’s face, arms hanging limply at his sides now because he felt... So powerless all of a sudden. He’d never spoken to anyone about this before; here the generally so put together and well spoken doctor stood, bruised, tired, and with a loss for words. He didn’t know if Ares’ understood that he was the only person on the planet Ramesh would allow himself to be this way in front of.

Maybe Ram was just realizing it himself. He hadn’t meant to just flood Ares’ bedroom floor with his own personal trauma.

“I’m sorry.” He closed his eyes, “You didn’t ask for this.”

Jonah was just sitting on the porch, knees curled to his chest, back to the door. He rocked back and forth, sucking on his thumb, deep in scattered thought when Ram finally opened the door. He remembered the shot from the pellet gun - painful, but not something he couldn’t ignore. No, he’d been injured too many ways to have it matter anymore. Injuries weren’t deterrents anymore than they were inconveniences.

Jonah didn’t turn around at first, still sitting with his thumb in his mouth. He was trying to pull his thoughts together, despite them dangling by a thread. Finally, he spoke. “You could try Latin, but my diction’s very rusty. It’s been a few hundred years. But you don’t mean that one, do you? Vatican Latin.” He wrinkled his nose. He could almost hear Rodrigo scolding him. “I am a bad sire.” He said. “I should have stuck around to ensure your transition was easy. I should have considered more than my own hunger.” He paused. “But I didn’t, and now, you suffer for it.” He flinched, memory reaching up to try to pull him under. A glowing rod. “I understand there’s no way for me to convince you but I would like to at least try to do as I should have and teach you - or at least, be a figure in your life to ask advice.” He paused, chewing on his thumb again. “You should be able to pick out smells, hone that skill to use in your practice. Pregnant women with fetuses in distress have a distinct smell. Cancer smells vaguely like rot, particularly when metastasized, but different cancer types have different smells. I’ve studied medicine long enough to know the difference, even if back then we had no words for what it was.” Finally, he stood, turning to face the younger man. “You have much to learn. Would you like to speed run it?”

Ram sighed at the sight of Jonah; his head rested against the doorframe in exasperation, then banged his forehead against it twice as Jonah wen’t on about Vatican Latin.

“You should have considered a lot of things.” he grumbled before forcing his eyes open and his gaze towards his sire. “Jonah, listen to me. I don’t want your help. I don’t want you in my life...” He didn’t know how to categorize the relationship that was forming between them. Jonah was far older and seemed to want to teach Ram things as someone’s father or mentor would (a prospect Ram involuntarily rejected as he already had his own daddy issues he refused to acknowledge since he was a child) but at the same time here the man was sucking his thumb, it took Ram everything in his power to not snap at him to stop.

His voice trailed off at the mention of scent and its use in the medical field however.

“...You’ve studied medicine?” Jonah had perhaps unwittingly hooked Ram. The doctor cared about two things most in his life: his daughter and the hippocratic oath. If he could be doing more to help people, yes, he wanted to soak everything Jonah knew up like a sponge.

“I’m a fast learner.” he said plainly, crossing his arms, “But if we’re going to do this we need to establish some ground rules: number one, you cannot show up to my home or my place of work unannounced. My daughter frequents both places...” He still had to figure out how to tell her what’d he’d become and throwing Jonah into that mix didn’t sound like the best idea until he did, “Number two, you don’t get to touch me unless it’s strictly for teaching purposes. And Number three,” he felt his jaw clench, a strange wave of stress washing over him. Just the thought of how their conversation at the hospital ended sent a shiver of anxiety down his spine, “No... Compulsion. I will do as you ask without it.” Ram didn’t like feeling that out of control. That feeling stayed with him for days. “Do we have a deal?”

He blinks, not expecting someone to be behind the door as soon as he opened it. In hindsight, the fact that the other man was a vampire as well could explain why Edgar didn’t notice another living creature within his vicinity - neither of them were particularly living.

Of course he recognized Ramesh, he was the stupidly attractive man who hung around Professor Trilling. Edgar had seen him from time to time, apparently even being caught gawking, much to many of his coworkers’ amusement.

His mind kicked back into function as the other vampire introduced himself. “Oh, you have perfect timing Mr. Mahajan! I was just about to go to the admin office to get Chhaya’s contact info; I found her things while I was cleaning up for the night.”

Digging through his bag, he hummed with approval as he found what he was looking for. Turning back to Ram, he held out the aforementioned items. “You’re quite the caring father, coming all the way out here just to get this.”

Something dinged in his mind as he said that. “Or, wait, were you already here with Professor Trilling?” Edgar peaked behind the other’s shoulder, half expecting to see his coworker not far off.

Ram offered a polite half smile.

“Ramesh is fine. -- Thank you. She can be so forgetful sometimes.” The compliment was appreciated, a short laugh of surprise falling from his lips when Edgar asked about Ares’ whereabouts.

“I actually was here with Professor Trilling, yes. -- Are we with each other that often it’s notable when the other isn’t there?” He found the thought amusing, running a hand over the scruff of his jaw with a smirk, “The university isn’t all that far from the hospital, at any rate. Chhaya often sneaks into my office while I’m in surgery because she knows she’ll get free coffee and meals off of me when I come back.” He lifted the book, “Thank you again. Are you heading out?” He stepped aside, suggesting they might walk out together, “It’s nice to meet you in person. I think I’ve seen you in passing during one or two of my lectures. You have an interest in posterolateral lumbar fusion then?” He slipped his hands into his pockets, glancing up at the taller man, “Vascular neurosurgery lectures don’t tend to garner too large a crowd.”

Ram had been talking with Ares late into the evening, keeping the man company while he was working on this or that grant proposal. He was honored that Ares’ let him proof read things. “No. I think this looks excellent.” He handed the papers back to Ares’ with minimal grammatical corrections to be made, sticking the pen he’d been using into his bun, “You’re going to get the money.”

They were locking up now and parting ways, Ares towards the university exit, Ram towards the English and Humanities building. Chai had forgotten something in one of her professor’s offices after office hour and she’d requested Ram swing by and retrieve it. He hadn’t been expecting the professor to be there; prepared to text his daughter that she was out of luck.

But then the door opened.

“Oh, good evening, Professor.” If Edgar knew Ram, Ramesh surely didn’t know him. It was possible the man could have noticed the doctor in the science building with Ares or giving the occasional lecture to pre-med students but Ramesh couldn’t quite place the other man’s face. “My name is Ramesh, I’m Chhaya Mahajan’s father. She left a piece of literature here this morning?” A pause, slipping his phone into his back pocket, “-- In all honesty, I’m happy you’re still here. You’ve saved me an earful of grief.”

“Are you okay, Ramesh? You seem especially exhausted today,” Grace said, looking across the table at her friend in the cafe. He always seemed tired, but there was something different about his look today. He seemed broken down almost. It worried her.

The two had been meeting for coffee regularly since that time she came across him with his daughter, and while she appreciated the time away from the office, she couldn’t help but switch to therapist mode whenever she sensed things weren’t okay.

Ares was the only one Ramesh even remotely spoke about Jonah about.

Until now.

He lowered his coffee.

“I’m...” the doctor paused. There was no point in hiding anything from her, Grace was far too observant. “-- I won’t lie to you, I have not been well the past couple of weeks, no.” He wet his bottom lip in thought, attempting to figure out some way to explain his variety of unfortunate circumstances, “I don’t mean to be intrusive, please know that, Grace, but... I’ve been having an issue with my... sire.” He hated that word. It tasted vile coming out of his mouth, “We haven’t spoken about vampirism before now, but I know you know what I’ve become. I wasn’t always this way. And I’m finding adjusting hard enough on it’s on much less with the mad man responsible stalking me. That’s not normal is it? That he’s... Sticking around?”

Ram and Chai were walking through the park, coffees in hand. Maybe Ram had also treated her to some shopping. She was a good kid, she deserved nice things.

“So I told him to get a life…”

“You told him that?”

“I told him that.” Chai nodded. The drama amused Ram, and he didn’t really understand it but he listened, “But, like, I did my part so — Oh, hey Rhi!! Dad, hold this for me for a sec, please?”

Ram watched his daughter’s face light up, waving happily to another teen approaching.

“A friend from high school?” Ram asked, taking Chai’s bag from her as she jogged to meet her friend. He watched her contently before catching sight of someone he knew walking the same way.

“Jezebel… I’ve been reduced to bag holder. As you can see.” He lifted the shopping bags and Chai’s little backpack. He never really spoke to Jez at the hospital other than briefly in passing. So little did they interact he couldn’t have formed an opinion on the werewolf if he tried. It was always interesting to see coworkers in street clothes. It reminded him that they all had a life outside of the hospital. He glanced over his shoulder at the girls’ laughter, “I suppose they know each other from school.” But he didn’t remember seeing Jez’s daughter in Chai’s graduating class. He figured she was a smidge younger, “How are you?” It was polite conversation, nothing more nothing less:

It had been weeks.

At the hospital; at the grocery store; and now at HOME. For the SECOND TIME.

Ram should have been more upset that Jonah knew his address but at this point he wasn’t surprised. He officially had a stalker and a batshit crazy one at that.

He looked through the peek hole before unlocking the door.

“Alright, what more to I have to do — how much clearer can I be? The last time you were here you stood right there...” Ram pointed down the driveway, “— And a shot you in the balls with a pellet gun. I do not want to see you. I don’t want to hear you. I don’t want to THINK about you and you are making that very fucking difficult. Do you need me to translate it into another language? You understand Bengali. I can also do Italian, Latin, French or German. I don’t know sign language very well but if somehow that will get this through your thick skull I will learn. Take your pick.”

He knew that none of this would matter.

“What do you want from me, man??”

Khadir stared some at the man as Chai introduced him as her father. Why did this man look so familiar? He was certain he had never met the man before. Then he gave his first name. There was a reason he looked familiar despite not having met him before, he’d seen a picture of him as a kid. “Ramesh Mahajan? From Kolkata, Ramesh Mahajan?”

The question caught Ramesh off guard.

With furrowed brow he didn’t respond for a moment.

“What’s happening?” Chai asked, looking between her father and Khadir before something clicked in Ram’s head.

“...Oh... Oh my god!” A hand raised to comb his hair back, “Khadir?” Kind of wild seeing your childhood pen pal in person, 30 years later.

“You’re a werewolf?”

Now Ares might not have been great when it came to social interaction but he was observant and it was worrying that Ram said he couldn’t tell him. They didn’t hide things from each other. Ram knew all about Selene and what happened to her and the trauma he faced as a result. Ares didn’t believe for one second that Ram would willingly keep something from him. Especially at the words “he was touching me.” Without knowing it Ramesh had revealed something about what happened. Perhaps that was the way to go.

“Of course I keep blood here. You’re my friend. Go shower and don’t apologise. I understand.” He motioned for Nova to get down so Ram could get himself up. “You were at work before this?”

“I was. Someone... He was posing as a doctor and I handled it.” He sighed, “As well as I could.” His hand ran over his neck again; Jonah could have choked him out with one hand.

The shower helped. But there were some things soap and water couldn’t wash off.

Wet curls fell onto bare shoulders. “Thank you, by the way.” Stood in the doorframe of Ares’ bedroom the sweatpants loaned to him were too long (of course); Ram rolled them at the waist then held out a hand for Ares to toss the shirt he was letting Ram borrow. “...You do know I would tell you if I could...”
